How shall I call you?
I do not know calycanthus, I have not had the pleasure to smell it - and I do not think, that I would forget it, if it happened.

CALYCANTHUS all along gives me the feeling, that I know the notes very well, it is easy to analyse and easy to understand - but it is more difficult in fact.

All what I can detect at the beginning is a green lilly-of-the-valley. Charming and cute, innocent. Green has many shades, this one is light as aloe vera or cactus.
Unfortunately there is a synthetic power in the fragrance, that goes out to patrol and discourages people who probable would be attracted by the gentle and gleeful beginning. It also gets way too sweet.

For the base I get back a citric green freshness, with a bunch of flowers, but I would not like to force myself to deal with heart notes till that.

CALYCANTHUS is clearly dedicated for women, rather for young than for old. Endurance is excellent, radius is also good.

An English garden in Spring
Calycanthus is a beautiful and refreshing interpretation of an old English garden.

My childhood home is built on 4 hectares, 2 hectares being an English garden complete with white gravel paths, archways and a vineyard. Calycanthus takes me back there.

It opens quite strongly with sweet, dewy jasmine and orange blossom. There's also a rather green feel to this fragrance, making it smell like a natural bouquet of flowers rather than a perfume.

As it develops a sweet powderiness begins to show. It doesn't overpower the composition, but it does however give Calycanthus a clean-like quality.

This fragrance is all about sparkling florals and sweet honey. It's not particularly unique, but it is distinctive. A wonderful Spring fragrance in my opinion.

This fragrance is pretty, feminine, fresh and lasting. It may be niche, but Calycanthus is not a fragrance so daring that it can't be worn by perfume novices. I do believe that a majority of people will enjoy this fragrance, one reason being that it's a nicely composed jasmine scent, one that doesn't overpower or turn rancid on the skin.

unspeakable
I tried the unspeakable Calycanthus with some reservations, as I expected a complicated scent.
Fortunately, that is not the case at all.

Friendly sweet and softly honeyed is our encounter.
Almost lovely with a distinctive spice.
The cyclamen has a slightly powdery effect - smoothed out by the juicy peach.

Even my husband steps out from the sidelines towards me and takes a sniff.

I am looking for a gift fragrance - and Calycanthus would be suitable in its approachability.
But I don't know if it fits my intended recipient.

For me, it would be suitable, as it is feminine and soft.
At the same time, unremarkable.

It has made it onto my note list.

Spice Bush
The description of the fragrance notes suggests that Calycanthus by Acca Kappa is an exceptionally sweet scent. However, this is only partially true. Calycanthus does smell sweet, but it does not go in that syrupy-sweet direction with an artificial touch that many of the mainstream women's fragrances launched in recent years belong to (e.g., Armani Code, Flowerbomb, also Angel). The sweetness in Calycanthus is restrained and feels natural; I wouldn't be surprised if a relatively high proportion of natural essences is included. The scent feels unartificial to me and reminds me of some organic fragrances from Farfalla or Florascent. Calycanthus is not pleasingly sweet, but rather very spicy and quirky, although there is also a gentle, creamy note present.

If only the four fragrance notes mentioned above are included, the spiciness must come from the orange blossom. It is very present here, but of a slightly scratchy variety.

I couldn't detect a significant scent development; the restrained fresh top note (maybe that's just the effect of the alcohol present) dissipates quickly, and then Calycanthus remains stubbornly spicy-sweet for a long time. I find the scent very interesting, but I waver back and forth on whether I like it for myself. Sometimes more, sometimes less.

The spice bush family (Calycanthaceae) belongs to the order of laurel-like plants (Laurales). Some spice bush species are used for perfume production. I got this information from Wikipedia.
According to the Acca Kappa website, "Calycanthus" represents the scent of the spice bush. I just don't know how Calycanthus smells, and unfortunately, the internet does not (yet) have olfactory functions.

Classic with hesperidic notes, a green spicy tone, fruit, moderate sweetness, and a floral heart with musk: could be 30 years older: good!

It's pretty. Green notes, floral, slightly spicy notes that slowly sink into honey. Doesn't suit me.

These bright, evening-blooming, slightly wilted, softly melancholic flowers do not hide their green, slightly waxy stems.

Gentle and mild ethereal-floral scent, could also be a natural cosmetic body lotion. Green-spicy early bloomers, very close to the skin.

I love this crisp green, this pressed plant juice. Initially wild, it becomes more floral and gentle over time.

Venetian gardens in spring. Or: When you meet the Contessa on the Vaporetto. More feminine due to floral notes.
