An Honest Reformulation
Many reformulations go unnoticed. We are not told – as if the responsibles wanted to hide a guilty consciousness. Those who do not follow the general rule are confronted with bewilderment and indignation. Such seems to be the case with Acca Kappa's Cedro rsp. LiboCedro.

Cedro is the vintage fragrance and LiboCedro the reformulated version. The whole branch is completely unable to cope with the situation that a perfume house deliberately revealed a reformulation by a slight name change. They simply ignore it. In the shops, sales assistants will tell you that LiboCedro is a complete unique fragrance. And on the net, you can find offers for “Cedro” but with the flacon of “LiboCedro” displayed.

No perfume afficionado is fond of reformulation. At least, the sincerity of the Acca Kappa management has to be acknowledged.

As usual, the vintage version is the better perfume. Nevertheless, I still recommend a sample wear of LiboCedro. The difference is that between a brilliant and a very good perfume.

Acca Kappa is one of those perfume houses that have found a style of their own. All their fragrances are about light musks in the base with more variation in the top and heart notes. Although they divide their line-up into ladies', gents' and unisex perfumes, the focus on light musks seems to make each of their gents' fragrances a good wear for women as well. Each one – except Cedro!

Cedro has dry, slightly tart and in my perception very masculine notes of cedar and clove – quite clear-cut. They are put in position against an attractive old-school washing powder musk. This combination is downright thrilling, and I am not aware of any other perfume where this idea is conducted with the same straightforwardness. The tension this creates might lead up to a point where Cedro can become a difficult wear – and the thrill might get disturbing. I can confront myself with that outstanding fragrance only once in a while, the inner tension is simply too much for daily wear. The dry cedar-clove combination gives me images of a gent's club or a smoking parlour while the musk pushes the fragrance into a clean and more modern direction: presumably a weird combination for the less open-minded.

On my own, this tension lasts throughout the whole wear. But recently, I had the chance to smell Cedro on a friend of mine. He stayed at my place and in the morning he grabbed into my collection and happened to to draw out Cedro. I smelled him on a car ride in the afternoon and it was all aromatic musks – which was equally attractive. It seems that the two sides of Cedro have a different sillage.

Now to LiboCedro. It is almost the same except for a slight hint of what seems to be a little white musk added. This provides a little fluffiness to the fragrance which works like a bumper between those opposing accords. Completely unnecessary! It diminishes the masculine cedar and clove accord and provides a slight unisex touch to the fragrance. I suppose this was what was intended but the thrill and the uniqueness are somewhat – well, moderated.

No matter which version – I highly recommend getting to know this special Acca Kappa approach.

When it Clears Up
This is a pretty, clear, and slender forest scent. The heaviness that quickly hits my nose with many other woody representatives is not to be found here. From the creaking, densely wooded dark forest, it moves out into the daylight and into the bright edges. There is still vegetation here, but one can breathe. The terrain opens up and the view is hardly obstructed anymore. The surrounding spice no longer weighs down; it floats and buzzes, seeming finely woven. In "Cedro," there is of course mainly Cedro. It is the striking yet modest main character of the whole composition. It is more of a cedar that has been polished and cleaned a bit; the roughness is left out. Surrounding the center are mainly soft, beautifully balanced spice accents, with a very small citrus fraction keeping things subtly lively and restrainedly juicy. I simply love it when perfumes have character but don’t want to shout. This is exactly one of those. A big recommendation from me! :)

Don’t judge a scent by its name
For a long time, I had my struggles with Cedro. For reasons that I couldn't quite understand, access to this fragrance seemed denied to me. It almost felt as if it was quietly reproaching me, saying: “You just don’t understand me.” I tried for a while longer, and eventually decided to file the scent under the category of “mysterious encounters” due to lack of interest.

By chance, Cedro recently came back into my hands. Assuming I was holding a different sample, I unknowingly dripped a few drops of it onto my wrist. The initial astonishment slowly gave way to a suspicion that began to make its way from the depths of my subconscious and then suddenly turned into certainty. Suddenly, it was like scales fell from my eyes, and I realized what had stood between me and the fragrance all this time: myself. Or, to be more precise: my expectations. Every time I had knowingly applied Cedro, I did so with the anticipation of a pronounced, woody scent. And this is really not what Cedro has to offer, even if the name suggests otherwise. The impartiality of the mix finally revealed the fragrance in all its beauty.

Cedro is primarily balsamic, from the first second to the last. But certainly not in a sharp, medicinal way. On the contrary, the scent is balanced and rounded, with the balsam being the main theme. At times it is fruity and sweet, evoking associations with overripe bananas, while at other times it carries aquatic, algae-like nuances that remind me a bit of Sel Marin by Heeley. Other accents are beautifully integrated but clearly play a supporting role. After the first few minutes, a very gentle, smoky note becomes apparent, just a hint that flickers up from time to time. This evolves over time, gaining slightly greenish, woody shades after about an hour, again more of a hint than certainty; you really have to stay close to the scent to perceive the differentiations.

Cedro does not undergo a development in the true sense; a sea of balsam is at the center of the action from the very beginning, with a few supporting players set aside who occasionally provide counterpoints. And yet, Cedro reveals its own unique charm when you approach it without prejudice: the scent has depth without losing its clarity. It exudes something mysterious, yet does not come across as threatening. And although sweet notes dominate, Cedro remains warm and balanced.

It took a while, but we have found each other. I have learned to appreciate Cedro for what it is: a gentle fragrance in which woody notes are merely an accessory, a wood scent that really isn’t one.

Strange first the name and then cedar!!!
Thank you Apicius for the samples, they all arrived safely today and I immediately sprayed and tested Cedro by Acca Kappa.

Regarding the scent,
as one might suspect from the name, it smells directly of cedar upon spraying. I find the cedar scent extremely pleasant, woody, resinous, and somehow green; anyone who does not like this scent should keep as much distance as possible from this fragrance, as the cedar scent carries through the entire development and all other scents have been adapted to the cedar.
Right after spraying, the cedar hits you powerfully, unusual but not bad; once you have fought your way through the cedar, I can faintly smell the cloves and cardamom, both of which remain discreetly in the background and slightly round off the cedar scent.
During the drydown, nothing changes upon first sniff; the wonderful cedar scent runs evenly through the entire process, however, behind the cedar, I find that quite a bit is happening that is noteworthy.
Slowly, the cardamom disappears, the sage and clove emerge and mix with the sage, the scent slightly reminds me of an herb garden somewhere in Tuscany.
In the end, the clove disappears again, now the lemon and bergamot come forward, both mix with the sage and create a fresh finish; I especially love to smell lemon and bergamot in the base.
All in all, I would not describe the scent as fresh but rather as cool; it must be cedar from the high mountains, where the wind whistles around them their entire life. This is definitely not for the young and wild, but rather something for the composed gentleman who cannot be rattled and always keeps a cool head.
Unfortunately, I cannot say anything about the petitgrain; I unfortunately do not know what that is and therefore could not check the scent of it.

I give 80%, as the scent is quite good; I really like cedar and lemon + bergamot in the base, but somehow I miss an obvious development in the drydown, as this cannot really be perceived unless one engages with it intensively.

More of a Mess than a Cedar
I never thought there would come a cedar scent that I absolutely dislike, one that causes headaches. But unfortunately, Cedro is such a case that I will gladly pass on my sample. I liked the Blue Lavender from Acca Kappa much better. Normally, I love cedar - whether creamy, fresh, masculine, or oriental - but this interpretation is like casting my favorite movies with Muppets and remaking them. And a Tony Montana or Frodo Baggins as a Muppet - that just doesn’t fit ;-) I really thought at times I was in the wrong movie, although the scent calmed down a bit over time.

Normally, I perceive cedar as a balsamic wood that comes across as very masculine and pleasantly herbaceous. The color gray often fits the scent impression very well, without becoming boring. But Cedro, which has now been re-released as LiboCedro... phew, it’s hard to be gracious, even with prominent supporters further down. And I think the sample hasn’t gone bad; I’m even sure of that. Maybe it’s the combination with sage or clove... I’m not exactly sure... my beautiful cedar wood just comes across here completely differently and not nicely. A bit sweet, but in a way that makes me feel nauseous. Creamy cedar as always, just turned upside down and very, very annoying. On the skin, it’s even worse than on test strips... awful. But it’s very interesting to be so surprised by a fragrance that you usually like and think you know - here, unfortunately, absolutely negatively!

Bottle: a bit too uninspired for me.
Sillage: it annoyed me too much, but actually absolutely within the range.
Longevity: unfortunately, it reached 6 hours.

Cedar done differently - for me, it unfortunately went completely wrong or rather, the migraine-brain!
