The Scent of a Pending Resolution
Amouage, a name (once) synonymous with a particular approach to perfumery: challenging, potent, and often unique... has, like many successful organizations, shown signs of an evolving strategy. This shift, while a subject of debate among devoted omaniac fans, is understandable as the house seeks to broaden its appeal. Decision is perhaps the tangible evidence of this transition, presenting itself as a fragrance that is, in essence, a decision still pending.

In fact, Bisch's work has an unfinished quality, as if it were a two-dimensional sketch of a scent... and I am beginning to think that the colour of its bottle wasn't picked at random. It lacks the expected layers and dynamic evolution often associated with Amouage's past creations, remaining largely static from the initial spray to its final moments on the skin.
The fragrance seems frozen in a single, consistent state, a departure from the dramatic olfactory journeys the brand is known for.

Putting aside the sometimes-harsh criticism from those who view this change as a deep betrayal of the brand's heritage, "Decision" is, by all accounts, a solid product. In my opinion, Bisch seems to have navigated this new direction with a certain respect for Amouage's DNA. The fragrance avoids reliance on his signature devilish ingredients and steers clear of overtly mainstream appeal.

The scent itself, while 2D, achieves a balanced and well-executed experience. The interplay between the green juniper and the warm vanilla is grounded by the subtle, resinous depth of Amouage's frankincense and myrrh.
Decision maintains a consistent scent bubble for 10-12+ hours, making it a reliable and long-lasting choice for those who can appreciate its comforting, albeit linear, character. In my opinion, this is a much better product than most of Sorcinelli's incense forward works, so if you like that kind of perfumery style, you should give Decision a sniff.

The sky is not falling, you just have rose tinted glasses
Decision is not the most adventurous or interesting fragrance, and that's ok. I swear, if Amouage releases something, and it's not a 10/10 masterpiece that blows everyone's mind because it somehow smells amazing and is utterly complex and unique at the same time, everyone starts decrying the demise of this brand. Y'all realize that the Chong era had a huge number of misses and generic releases too, right? Or did you forget Beloved Man, Honour Man, and Beach Hut Man existed? Instead of comparing your top 3 or 4 fragrances from that era to the top 3 or 4 fragrances of Salmon's Amouage, you're comparing them to every single new release.

Also, with Decision and Outlands the prevailing opinion among the "sky is falling on our head" types is that they are "generic," yet they can't come up with a single fragrance for either that is an obvious inspiration. Yes, Decision takes an accord from Purpose and makes it smoother and fresher, and Outlands takes some inspiration from Cecile Zarokian's previous work, but calling them entirely non-innovative is a stretch. Speaking of a stretch, people have started comparing Outlands to Layton (?!) of all things just to try to make the case that it is generic. And by the way, other than both being creamy vaguely-vanilla-based citrus fragrances, Decision and Outlands smell nothing alike. Outlands' citrus goes more in a fizzy limeade direction, while Decision's is straight perfume-y bergamot. Outlands is built on smooth sandalwood and a spicy amber accord, Decision is built on vanilla and incense.

Another reason I think Decision got backlash is the decision (pun absolutely intended) to release Purpose, Purpose 50, and itself in such quick succession. Releasing all of these Bisch akigalawood frags in a period of two years got people, especially enthusiasts who sample all the Amouage fragrances, weary very quickly. I think it was because akigalawood is the new hype and Amouage want to jump on the bandwagon before they get passed by. Regardless, I think if Decision came out a couple of years from now, and was rebranded as another Purpose flanker, people would have liked it much more. Not that people don't like it now. The rating is high, since people who don't have the baggage I've described in the first two paragraphs of this review are smelling it without biases and going, "wow, this is a really nice citrus-vanilla-incense scent."

Anyway, that's my rant. Probably a good idea to actually describe the scent of Decision now:

Decision opens with a creamy bergamot and subtle cardamom. The vanilla comes in pretty quickly, so the scent is pretty much linear to the drydown. There is an akigalawood note but it is subtle as well, bolstering the vanilla and trying to give the incense some lift. I say trying because I don't think the incense really leaves the skin that well, I can smell a smoky resinousness when I smell where I sprayed, but in the air, it smells mostly of bergamot, vanilla, and akigalawood.

Yes, it goes in a mass-appealing direction. Yes, it is probably going to be a better seller than the more experimental releases. But I really don't see this as Amouage "selling out." Simply because they've always had their "sell out" moments where they go all in on a mass-appealing direction. Decision is no Memoir Man or Interlude Man or Opus XIV - Royal Tobacco. But that doesn't mean the end is nigh.

NO NEW TRICKS
As part of my 2025 rankings revisit, this review was revised in late November 2025, approx. 5 months after the original review, to reflect several wearing experiences in multiple different seasons and weather scenarios.

---

Do you remember the Amouage before COVID? It might feel like a distant memory, but in the aftermath of the pandemic as Amouage's house direction continues to go more and more mainstream, the gap between what the Omani brand does now relative to where they were under Chong or even in Renaud's first few years has never been bigger. Decision is yet another example of that gap widening.

One aspect that I dislike about contemporary Amouage's creative direction (or the lack thereof) is the heavy cross-application of notes/accords from product to product. If you were to read my review of Reasons which came out in 2024, you'd see me highlight how the scent uses many of the raw ingredients from scents like Lineage and Jubilation XXV Man. The same was true of Lustre and the same is also true with Decision.

On my first time smelling Decision, the initial notes that I wrote down state that Decision features the same sweet licorice-like opening of Opus XIV - Royal Tobacco, the same spicy notes like Lineage, the same aromatic-synthetic woody structure like Purpose with a very clear reference to one-trick-pony Quentin Bisch's akigalawood DNA. On the second wear in November, the scent is actually a lot less dynamic and I struggle to get much depth at all: the product clearly is between Purpose and Purpose 50. It features the same type of aromatic-synthetic-woody akigala, accompanied by smokiness (incense) and light sweetness. I feel like Decision is rounded out smoothly with light creaminess on-skin, meaning Purpose 50 is a better comp than the EDP. Relative to the first wear, I don't really get any dark woody/leathery qualities and the smokiness seems more tame than what I had reflected in the first review. In the ultimate dry-down around ~1.5-2 hours in, I've noted for both wears that the little smokiness/depth that it had dissipates into a mild spicy-woody scent with clear aromatic qualities.

Overall, there's just nothing special about Decision overall as the composition is very simple in nature once all the other notes fade away after the top. The core scent plays around akigalawood, atlas cedar and incense with significant overlap from both versions of Purpose. The only thing that Decision has going for it is that I remember both versions of Purpose being more synthetic and more akigalawood driven. I'd say this scent is woody-smoky-spicy with some sweet-oriental qualities as well. Performance wise it feels average to slightly below: outside of the moderate open, sillage peaks at arm's length (rated 4/10) and true longevity is closer to 6 hours (rated 5/10) than the 7-8 I had it down as in my original review. The blending and execution are the only things pushing this above a median ranking, but besides that there really isn't anything else here. It's almost as if Decision is a watered down version of Purpose 50 that they're somehow selling for 3/4 of the price.

Decision: A conclusion or resolution reached after consideration
This is going to be more of a rant, but a quick review of the scent: Amouage's Decision opens up with fresh citrus and a potent blast of pink pepper. The type of pink pepper that makes your nose hairs singe and wakes you up. On my skin, the pink pepper note remains prominent well into the dry down, which I rather enjoy. The dry down is a cozy mix of frankincense, myrrh, mild vanilla that isn't too sweet, and cedar. The pepper really cuts through and keeps me invigorated throughout the day. I don't get much juniper berry fruit from the scent itself, but the greenness and woodiness of the juniper berry plant.

Onto the rant. I personally don't mind the direction Amouage is heading. Amouage will always have the experimental "masterpieces" which people rave about from the Chong era (if they were to progressively discontinue them for their new offerings, then this review will change) for the Amouage OGs, aficionados, and fans to enjoy. I feel like the more "tame" and "mass appealing" profiles allow a wider audience to dip their toes into the house that so many of us enjoy.

Is Decision the most innovative or unique Amouage offering? NO. Is it unimaginative and bland compared to the scent profiles that other designers or even niche houses are releasing? NO.

I love my Amouages, but being in an academic environment makes it difficult to wear some of my favorites like King Blue or Interlude 53. I appreciate the release of Decision, as it allows me to enjoy a scent profile synonymous with a fragrance house that I really enjoy in more versatile environments.

A quality house is built on strong foundations, and Amouage constructed that through the Chong Era. These newer, more approachable releases add a bit of decoration to the house. Stuff that is easy on the eyes and creates a sense of home and welcome for new guests and friends. I don't agree with a handful of releases culminating into the decision that the house is crumbling down.

Is this more Bisch than Amouage?
It’s no surprise that this fragrance has received good reviews and clearly sells well despite the price. But it’s not what you expect from Amouage. Personally, I expect “unique fragrances not for everyone.”

Alright, let’s get to the scent itself. A finely crafted work. The technical performance is even a bit excessive. But on YouTube, reviewers talk about the fragrance evolving, its complexity, and innovation. Meanwhile, I just smell like a church. Sweet francincense. If you really focus on smell, you can distinguish many other notes, but overall it’s a sweet church-like scent. I don’t mind it, but maybe we can stop calling this a top 3 from the brand? The scent is good and ultra-wearable but Amouage has many more interesting scents.

Metallic, peppery incense. Synthetic sweetness.
Bisch’s love affair with akigalawood & vanilla.
A sad, mass-appealing direction for Amouage.

I'd make the Decision to Bisch slap the Salmon responsible for this messy resinous akigalawood sludge. This is my Purpose. Fifty.

Oh Bisch why does everything have to smell like peppery citrus? And why does it have to cling on like a Klingon?

Not the worst Amouage (wait until you smell Reception). Incensy vanilla + green. Good performance. Smells "unfinished".

Sharp metallic sweetness subbing in for freshness, cloying start to finish, synthetic, creamy. Unrecognizable as Amouage, unscrubbable.
