Frankincense and the Desert Boys Affair
Purpose 50 is not a mere intensified version of Purpose Eau de Parfum, but in my opinion a better version of it (that doesn't smell like boiling pasta). Purpose 50 is earthier, denser, and overall heavier. The 50% extrait concentration brings out a mineralic frankincense, softened by vanillin and sandalwood, which tempers the dryness without compromising its depth.

The composition leans into aspects of vetiver, papyrus, akigalawood, and saffron, transmitting a feeling of a scorched terrain. The aforementioned addition of vanilla is used structurally, to make the scent more wearable though still contemplative.

I don't think that the recent Bisch's Amouage releases can be considered in isolation... and probably others should be added to this discussion. There’s a clear thematic continuity across these perfumes: dryness, incense, mineralic woods, and a sense of earthiness.

Talking about Purpose, we can say that it is the most polarizing of the Prupose, Purpose 50 and Decision trio. Dry, intense, and smoky. It’s a bold take on frankincense, with suede, saffron, and Mystikal adding layers of spice. I found this to be the most challenging to wear.

Decision, instead, is the simplest one in structure, yet perhaps the most versatile. It opens with bergamot, pink pepper, and cardamom, leading into a heart of myrrh and juniper, and settles into a base of cedarwood, vanilla, and patchouli. It’s clean and contemporary... less about earthiness, more about versatility. While lacking the complexity (and price tag) of Purpose 50, it’s arguably the most adaptable of the three.

Ultimately, it’s not hard to imagine Bisch (carrying a bottle of akigalawood absolute) and Salmon walking the same desert paths, absorbing the same sun-scorched silence and translating it into different olfactory expressions.
Each of these fragrances might feel like a different time of day, in the same place - and, unfortunately, this comes with a feeling of redundancy. Taste is highly subjective, but I don't think that there is enough reason to own them all.

The Scent of Oman
A reviewer on Fragrantica, in response to others complaining about Purpose being given the extrait treatment ahead of other favorites like Memoir Man and Overture Man, said "In Oman, Purpose was our holy grail because of our deep and ancient connection with frankincense...This one is for us, world; you'll get the next one."

And that got me thinking, what is the "purpose" of Purpose? Other than the "purpose" of a journey in the context of the "odyssey" collection. What is the purpose or mission of Amouage in general? It was founded in 1983 at the request of the Sultanate to be the "Gift of Kings," according to their website. I've read elsewhere that the house was founded so the Sultanate could share its rich history of fragrance-making with the rest of the world.

I follow Amouage on social media, and since they are a growing company, they are always posting teasers of new stores/constructions. I'm always frustrated that many of these projects are taking place in Oman, and they still don't have a boutique near where I live in Southern California. But I think that's the ultimate "purpose" of Amouage - to attract tourists to Oman by sharing its rich olfactory heritage with the world.

And I think Purpose 50 is the ultimate expression of that heritage. Frankincense is, of course, the main fragrant export of the country, and the frankincense on display here is next-level. Just like its little brother Purpose EDP, the extrait's use of frankincense is not ecclesiastical; not that airy subtle smokiness found in fragrances like Series 3: Incense - Avignon. It is deep, rich, resinous - a perfect representation of those little yellow-green rocks that aromatize countless Middle-Eastern homes and places of worship.

However, in Purpose EDP, frankincense was just a small part of a larger "dry" accord; here, the dry woody accord is there to support the incense note. And with new additions: my main complaint about the EDP was the boring suede-y drydown. This has been fixed with the addition of a touch of vanilla and other fixatives to keep the smokiness of the frankincense going. The rose is very light and watery, definitely not a rich jammy presence.

I'm not sure about the comparisons to Guidance 46 as I have not smelled that, but I remember sampling Guidance Eau de Parfum and Purpose 50 has absolutely no similarity. I found Guidance mainly fruity, nutty, and creamy, none of which could be used to describe Purpose 50. Even in the deep drydown, the smoky woodiness can be keenly felt.

Performance is fantastic as per usual with the Exceptional Extraits - eternal longevity while the projection lasts a good 8 hours.

What a gorgeous scent - top 5 Amouage for sure.

The Best Amouage
Opinion: This is a flat out masterpiece from Amouage.

It’s not mass appealing and might even be considered polarizing. To me, it’s one of the top 5 fragrances in my collection. It’s fresh, dense, earthy, a little smoky, and complex. On my skin it’s versatile. I’ll be wearing this during all 4 seasons. It lasts and performs as you would expect. Very unique and very opulent. Also very alluring. 10/10 one of the best, if not thee best men’s fragrance I’ve ever smelled. This will probably be my signature scent. I keep going back to it. I’m actually sort of glad to see some of the negative reviews. Just means more for me.

Purpose 50 rated higher than Purpose?
Man oh man, where to start with this review? I wore Purpose 50 and after a few hours, compared it to Purpose sprayed on one wrist. I would expect an extrait (and the much higher price) to give me a similar fragrance but with more depth, richness and strength. I really liked Purpose and put off adding it to my shopping list until I tried Purpose 50. So, my expectations were high. It turned out downright disappointing.

The notes between the two are almost identical, so I can't understand the difference. Purpose 50's opening killed it for me. I found the opening and following ~2 hours just plain repulsive. It was a weird, boiling vegetable type of scent to my nose. Definitely not something I want to smell like. After roughly 2 hours, it dried down to something resembling Purpose, but not as good. I'll leave it at that.

Purpose 50 has very good performance, but not really much better than Purpose. As you might guess, Purpose is now on my shopping list. It's truly a great Amouage unlike this unfortunate fume.

Pulpous 50
I've seen the reviews! Boiling (even rotting) vegetables; dryer sheets.

With no proper comparison available to the OG Purpose, I have no comment as to how the two relate. But phew, I'm glad I don't get any variation of vegetables here — boiled or not. No, I get a intense blast of frankincense, but how I perceive it is a huge pitcher of orange juice with none of the pulp gone to waste. It's got all the pulp, thick and gooey. This orange juice also stays on my skin for the entire day in a fairly linear fashion, just a bit sweeter at four or five hours in. My nose just can't get beyond pulpous orange juice, however, and I really enjoy that.

I sprayed this on a scarf and I was still able to smell just as strongly for two weeks before it started fading. There's no denying it, this is of exceptional extrait strength.

Why must you cost so much, Purpose 50 ? I'd love a full bottle, but I'll stick with the much cheaper alternative (to me anyway... I know many here probably won't think these smell similar) — Encre Noire Sport. I find E.N.S. to be a vetiver-heavy version of Purpose 50 to scratch that same orange-pulp itch, but obviously without the Amouage strength.

Bisch, proves once again he shouldn’t be anywhere near a niche perfume house. Purpose 50 is repulsive. Smells like sour, rotten vegetables.

Frankincense sprinkled with spices, creamy vanillic rose, suede and a vegetal nuance. Intimate proximity to be noticed.

The added powdery vanilla with a bump up in the akigalawood departament renders this sour, gratingly synthetic and more feminine leaning.

Opens with citric, peppery incense. Devolves into boiled vegetables (akigalapoop and saffron). Lasts forever, avoid spraying on clothes.

Raw, pulpous orange juice. Extreme longevity but too pricey.

This makes OG Purpose feel incomplete. Added rose and vanilla to the suede base - just fantastic. Gonna give it another wear then review

Spicy-resinous-woody (akigala, sandalwood & incense/mystikal) w/ bitter papyrus touches. Fairly strong. No rose nor any Guidance-like feel.

A green forest on a cold grey day, you smell incense coming from the depths of it. Amazing.

It smells really good, but to me it almost reminds me of Kenzo pour homme perfume.
