Back to the 80s
The first heatwave of the year is about to arrive, and I was on the lookout for a new summer fragrance. While I have already found a very fresh summer scent in Fenjal Aqua Baden Baden, one can still keep searching, and it’s fun.
Then this cheerful and colorful bottle caught my eye, which I really like, so I went for the tester. If you’re expecting a summery fresh scent, you will be disappointed. This is a summer blockbuster from the 80s in a new edition. Everything back then was just a tad too much. Fingernails too long, shoulder pads even in thin blouses, and the fragrances announced your arrival before you even entered the room, and the flight attendants would have deserved a danger allowance.
Pure Sun is pure 80s. It starts off with a bang featuring drums in the form of orchid and magnolia. This is how one imagined the South Seas during training, even if it was only enough for the North Sea in Holland. Then it continues with a blast of lotus, neroli, and apple blossom, and the scent becomes increasingly sultry and warm. You start wishing for a fan, but no, the dry down with benzoin and sandalwood is even warmer and more powerful. You could say it embodies the burning sun.
For sensitive individuals, it’s a candidate for drumming in the head in the form of migraines and headaches. The scent plays in the same league as SUN by Jil Sander. But in its original form. I like SUN, but today in a milder version from a Dutch supplier. A slimming treatment wouldn’t hurt this fragrance either, or one could change the name to Pure Winter Sun, because I can well imagine that it wouldn’t be such a lady-killer in the cold season.
Well, something was added that didn’t exist or was modern back then. A bit scratchy and unharmonious, because the old scents in the 80s were not like that despite all their strength.
For me, it means continuing the search for a summer fragrance, because this one just doesn’t work for us.
