Clean Cigarette Ashes...and More!
I am starting to wonder whether the house of Boucheron has a conscious ambiguity agenda going, as INITIAL, like so many other perfumes of this house (with the notable exception of the original powerhouse BOUCHERON) refuses to commit to a category or even to exhibit any sort of consistency from wearer to wearer. To my nose, this creation begins briefly with a tangerine/mandarin-spiciness evocative of the openings of a number of florientals familiar to me.

However, as INITIAL develops, a very strange mid-stage emerges, in which the pepper and cassis leaf (I presume) somehow combine to produce a dry cigarette-ash effect. It does not smell dirty here, as in Givency HOT COUTURE (which I do not like at all—in part because of the artificiality of the raspberries in that composition). Instead of smelling like a dirty ashtray, INITIAL mimics during its mid-stage (which lasts a few minutes) the scent of clean cigarette ashes—as oxymoronic as that may sound.

But wait, there's more: in the drydown, this perfume morphs again--at least on my skin, and according to my nose--into a honeyed-almond layer which lingers on and on and seems to bear no relation to the dry cigarette-ash stage, although it's not completely out of synch with the citrus-oriental opening.

Overall, I'd say that the identity of INITIAL is very difficult to pin down: it capriciously defies categorization and seems to manifest different notes to different wearers and even to the same wearer at different times. Given its manifest elusiveness, I'm not really surprised that this perfume was discontinued. The one thing that I can confidently assert is that INITIAL is both nonlinear and unique!

Somewhere in Nowhere

...stands an abandoned mansion in a deserted park. Almost forgotten and a bit eerie. A caretaker looks after it and ensures that it does not fall into decay. An ancient housekeeper sometimes airs it out and still enters the bedroom of the baroness with reverence, who died in childbirth about 70 years ago. No one else is allowed to enter this room, and nothing has ever been changed. The furniture in the house is covered with white sheets, and the curtains are drawn. Only a small beam of light shines here and there. The great-grandchildren have renounced the inheritance, and no one wants to buy the villa because it is said to be haunted and the baroness walks there. Some claim to have seen her face at the window or to have heard her weeping. It is rumored that the baroness's death was not a natural one.
At night, eerie veil-like beings are said to float through the park, and in summer, thousands of lights glow over the small lake. That they are fireflies during the wedding flight interests no one. After all, one does not want to spoil the mystique.
The housekeeper places lily of the valley on the baroness's bed every May. A fresh bouquet every day, for in the morning the lily of the valley is always gone.
In front of the bedroom window, jasmine and English roses bloom, which are already ancient and have not been tended to or pruned for a long time. Somehow, they seem to bloom with their last strength. The baroness used to dry them and put them in her trunk.
On the nightstand, there is still a box with the beloved pearl necklace of the baroness. No one dares to touch it, wear it, let alone steal it. It is said that whoever touches the baroness's treasures is possessed by her spirit and condemned to wander the battlements at night.

On the dressing table, there is still a box with cool, dusty powder. When the baroness glides through the halls at night, she always leaves behind a distant cloud of powder.
From a suit of armor, patchouli wafts. Oh no, it’s mice, raising the next generation and their special scent.

Noble Pearl Remains in the Closet
This Boucheron presents itself in the form of an earring: A flawless pearl, set in antique silver, with a subtle gold rim. Simple and elegant, it draws attention to itself. Even mine, although I have never worn a pearl necklace or even tried one on. I don't particularly favor gold either, and if I do, then only if it already shows signs of wear.
This is the difference between liking a perfume bottle and other preferences.
The content of this piece of jewelry is also solid: It is a rather abstract scent, jasmine can at best be sensed. The individual notes flow seamlessly into one another, without revealing their secrets. Floral-woody, always with a very fine, almost bitter touch. After two hours, the scent briefly intensifies again, perhaps a hint of pepper? And Initial lasts surprisingly long, gentle, beautiful.
Initial is a classic fragrance, perfectly crafted. A group of stylishly dressed ladies sits at a coffee table in a summer park, engaging in very refined conversation.
Solid, nothing is ostentatious. That is Initial.
However, it has not become an ignition for me. It is not a boring or interchangeable perfume. For me, it simply lacks a bit of bite. It’s like some jewelry that I admire in the shop window: It is beautiful, well-crafted, but I wouldn’t want to wear it.
It does not awaken any desires in me: Too ladylike, too perfect.

Sauna infusion or haunted castle?
This perfume truly evokes the most bizarre associations in me! It certainly doesn’t come across as feminine or even boring on me,
Right after spraying: Spicy, cinnamon-like, like warm wood! It reminds me a little of the infusion in a (classic) sauna with wooden beams - as I knew them from my youth. Very pleasant!
But shortly after: something citrusy, but no longer really fresh hits my nose. Like outdated effervescent tablets or - I can hardly bring myself to write this! - scouring powder! Could this be a perfume under the 50% mark? But luckily, this unpleasant phase doesn’t last too long.
Then comes a phase where the comment from Medusa ignites my imagination: "...commode from the Gründerzeit...old villa, creaking floorboards..."
In the village of my childhood, there was an old villa from the Gründerzeit in the middle of a huge park-like garden - in spring full of wildflowers, later the nettles grew as tall as a man. Because of the unresolved question of inheritance, no one took care of the beautiful old building; it was simply left to decay. Nevertheless, it radiated a morbid beauty! For us children, it was primarily an adventure playground! We called the villa the "haunted castle" and went on "expeditions" inside. Sometimes dubious figures would spend the night there, which made the house even creepier. Over time, the villa fell more and more into disrepair; you could see through the holes in the ceilings over three floors - it was certainly not safe to wander around there! Yet nothing ever happened to us. A few years after I moved away with my parents, the villa was finally demolished. What a shame!

Initially, it really has something from a bygone era, almost slightly morbid, perhaps due to the patchouli.
A spicy-warm pleasant note lingers on my skin, even after a hot bath.

Now I wonder: how to rate this? The "scouring powder phase" was really not enjoyable! It will hardly become a favorite scent. But the fragrance at least threw me into a whirlpool and recalled old memories. And I find the long-lasting base quite pleasant. Therefore, 70%.

An elegant floral scent that becomes warmer, earthier, and creamier over time. All notes are harmoniously intertwined. Lovely!

Back with me! A cool pearl poltergeist, like it's from another world. Misunderstood. More to come.

Spicy, strongly floral and dusty-powdery.
Somehow a love-hate relationship for me.
Sometimes I can tolerate it, sometimes I can't.
Enormous longevity.

Starts floral-fruity-spicy, feels a bit ladylike, but! be patient! The scent becomes milder, creamier, beautifully floral
Not bad

All-in-one - jack-of-all-trades scent: too much of everything. Amber, fruit, vanilla, honey. Overwhelmingly packed, too diffuse, too heavy.

Patchouli with underlying warmth, surrounded by pepper.
Honey-smoky floral classic. Maximalist elegance.
