Lovely sweet velvety iris but ultimately lacks identity...

My experience with Iris de Syracuse seems to reflect that of Littlegrassstraw. The opening is ever so lovely: a tenderly sweet woody iris, with a bit of starchy yet creamy, velvety texture. I don't perceive any earthy, metallic, carroty aspects of the iris. Iris de Syracuse at this stage, embodies the olfactory equivalent of an elegant pastel purple velvet gown.

Unfortunately, once it starts to dry down after roughly 2 hours, its magic begins to wear off. A sweet ambery accord pervades the creamy iris, turning it into a candy iris with a tiny suggestion of lipstick, which reminds me of a less ambery dry down of Jacques Fath Bel Ambre. It's still lovely, but in comparison to the graceful opening, it feels rather generic and déjà-vu.

The sillage is mostly close to the skin, and the longevity is around 8 hours.

I thoroughly enjoyed Iris de Syracuse, especially that its velvety sweet woody iris opening imparts a sophisticated yet approachable elegance. The transition to the candy ambery iris is also quite subtle, making it mostly linear, easy to appreciate and versatile as well.

However, because of the intense competition of many great iris fragrances, Iris de Syracuse, as lovely as it is, ultimately feels lack in personality and identity, a problem that impacts the whole range of Boucheron La Collection. Personally, I think there are other iris fragrances able to fulfilling a similar function as Iris de Syracuse, and with more personality and creativity as well. The high price and limited availability of Iris de Syracuse also don't help.

All in all, if you love iris and would like to get hands on each and every one possible, or if you happen to be on a quest for slightly starchy and creamy sweet iris, Iris de Syracuse would be quite enjoyable to sample, even though I suspect that there are better and more affordable alternatives somewhere else.

A lovely iris with no distractions.

Boucheron has an elegant line of perfumes that refers to ancient cities and kingdoms that is seldom seen or discussed anywhere. This group includes Iris de Syracuse, Oud de Carthage, Néroli d’Ispahan and many others. Part of the problem may be the complicated marketing and ownership arrangement between Inter Parfums and Boucheron. It is a shame really because Iris de Syracuse is a beautiful and powerful iris fragrance. This was created by Nathalie Lorson in 2017.

The notes listed for Iris de Syracuse on the Inter Parfums website are black pepper, pear, iris concrete, heliotrope, patchouli and white musk. What you get with this perfume is a strong beautiful iris, with a few additional notes that feel like an afterthought. The opening note is obviously iris, displaying the well-known dual personality of this accord. You get a nice suede leather note as well the floral note. No wonder iris is a common note in men’s perfume. There are nuances of pepper and pear in the opening, but these are totally overwhelmed by the suede and iris. I do not smell orange and vanilla anywhere in Iris de Syracuse. In the heart notes, the suede note subsides to elevate the floral iris, perhaps with some heliotrope. Heliotrope has overlapping characteristics with many other notes in this perfume, making it difficult to identify its unique presence. The base notes are musk and a bit of patchouli, with remnants of iris. Despite all the notes mentioned here, Iris de Syracuse is essentially iris all the way through.

This perfume performs well on my skin. I get longevity lasting over eight hours, with a lasting musky iris hanging on for longer. The sillage is nice in the opening hours, but not with any obnoxious projection. It is safe to wear this at office, though it may not turn heads at a party with other ambient smells.

Boucheron Iris de Syracuse is a beautiful iris, worthy of a spot in any collection. The suede note tempers the floral attribute of iris, adding to the strong personality of this perfume. But keep in mind that this is a single-minded iris fragrance. I have no hesitation recommending this perfume, especially when it costs less than $80 at the discounters.

The iris that made me love irises.

There are over 2000 variety of irises where I live, yet I never enjoyed them in perfumery until I met Iris de Syracuse. He conquered me from the first puff. The scent is noble without being imposing, luxurious without falling into the trap of vulgarity that often comes with that epithet.

We had met before, many years ago, in the form of the best present I have ever received as a child: a giant wooden box with over a hundred colored pencils from Italy, all nuances of red, yellow, and blue and the most intoxicating scent of freshly sharpened pencils. Iris de Syracuse is all that and more. The delicate smell of fresh wooden shavings, a little dry, a little sweet, tempting my child-self to dream and lay those dreams on paper.

Last summer I've managed to find that arts supply store that sold me my first crayons in Rome, on Via di Rippeta, near Piazza del Popolo. Although I hardly ever sketch these days, I bought another box, just because that scent always knows how to pluck my heartstrings. This particular iris was and will always be a part of me.

Iris de Syracuse m-a convertit de la primul puf. Nu mă omor după iriși neapărat. Ba, chiar îi detest când sunt uscativi și pudrați (Lightscape, Ulrich Lang) sau demodați și mumificați (Splendiris, Dusita).

Iris de Syracuse e ceva aparte. Așa de mult mi-a picat cu tronc încât pentru prima oară-n viața mea am riscat să command de pe piața gri, pentru că nimeni altcineva nu livrează unde locuiesc.

Parfumul este nobil fără sa fie impunător, luxos fără să fie strident sau vulgar. Emană class și rafinament, dar are și o latură blândă, umană, care te mângâie ușor pe creștet ca o mamă duioasă. Îmi amintește de cel mai bun cadou pe care l-am primit vreodată: o trusă enormă, de doua ori mai mare decât o cutie de table de joc, plină cu creioane de desenat din Italia. Avea peste 100 de creioane, toate nuanțele de roșu, albastru, galben and everything in between. Când deschideai acea trusă, te învăluia un miros delicat, ușor lemnos, ușor uscat, un pic dulceag de așchii proaspăt ascuțite. Te transporta pe alte tărâmuri, îți făcea poftă să visezi și să pui pe hârtie ce vedeai în fața ochilor.

În vara aceasta am dibuit acel magazin de creioane și produse pentru artă în Roma, undeva pe Via di Rippeta, lângă Piazza del Popolo, și cum am intrat, mi-au dat lacrimile când am recunoscut mirosul acela fermecător al copilăriei. Aceeași senzație o am și când port Iris de Syracuse: iubire pură, necondiționată, și libertatea de a visa în tihnă.

Raindrops keep falling on my head

In my garden grew a white iris.
On its blossoms are pearls from the last rain,
and the first rays of sunlight fall on them,
i have the image to this fragrance.

The iris,
dry at first,
then juicy, with minimal fruit,
later refreshing like rain,
with gossamer musk.

We're having one of those long, hot summers,
not like this year so far,
but really hot and dry,
for a long time.
Nature is craving for rain.
Even the nights bring no cooling.
But today is supposed to be the day,
the clouds are gathering,
but it drags on...
I sit on the balcony,
not to think of sleep,
and then comes this fragrance...
A first movement of the air,
a leaf,
that moves,
and then a breeze...
A gentle breeze,
carrying the scents of summer with it.
It doesn't keep me on the balcony anymore,
i go down to the garden,
and the first drops are falling...

One wets my eyelashes,
i catch the second one with my tongue...

Love on the second Riecher

There she is again, the paper iris - I smell almost nothing, spray the strip again properly. I wonder whether Iris feels lonely without her violet; or without at least having something tasty, appetising sweet to snack with her, against boredom. Keyword compensation.
The test strip then lies overnight in the car and the next day it smells when getting in, it has developed a wonderful iris scent, warm, sweet and soft. Candidate to buy.
