Subtle with a Sledgehammer
Subtle can the common North German, who has been living in exile in NRW for years, do particularly well. Or as my British colleague once put it, "you are as subtle as a hippo gracefully".. I think the hippo is being massively wronged here! Have you seen Disney's Fantasia? So!
Wrong is also done to this rather pretty rose scent by being penalized with "only" 4.8, partly due to comments about its longevity - therefore, I step in to defend Hippo, uh, Rose.
The little rose also comes across as "Subtile | Brecourt" not very subtly. A rather bold Provence Rose (also called "hundred-leaved" - beautiful!), green-fresh, powerful - not youthful light!, not too sweet, accompanied by a good portion of patchouli. I’m not a huge fan of the latter, Eau de damp cellar is not really my thing, but in this combination, the earthy notes fit wonderfully with the fresh green-floral aspect of the rose family. You literally feel like you’re standing in the flowerbed. Additionally, a slightly tart (berry) note, which I initially mistook for blackcurrant, pleases me as a fan of green roses like in L'Ombre dans L'Eau Eau de Toilette extremely well! The bottle may mislead at this point, as the whole thing is fresh and not dark, heavy, or oriental at all. Just saying!
The tried-and-true wood + musk + amber base does no harm, and I note at this point that the roses remain surprisingly present for a long time.
And here we come to the alleged crux of this fragrance: longevity. I can only speak for myself, but with one spray on the wrist in the currently cold temperatures, I could clearly perceive the scent while sitting at my desk for the first hour (when one gestures too much again) and can still find it well at about 10cm nose-skin distance after 5 hours. I don't think that's bad! And normally I have skin that gulps everything up immediately.
Give it a chance!
