Clever flanker!
Finally the word “essence” means something, as I clearly smell some differences with the original Declaration, and precisely in the way “essence” may suggest. That is: not only the juice is stronger here, but it also smells thicker, more dry, remarkably darker and smokier, with also a muskier and somehow “sweatier” vein. As a true “essence” of Declaration, indeed; cut out the fancy bright freshness and the crisp preppy look, go right to the juicy core. It’s obviously still Declaration in broad terms, so that’s the smell more or less; just bolder and dirtier. The drydown kind of "reconciles" with the soothing smoothness of the original Déclaration, still slightly smokier and muskier. Perhaps less classy and surely less fresh the original version overall, but totally non-redundant if you own that already. The Mr. Hyde of Dr. Declaration!

A Fresh Smile
It opens up with a sudden citrus note running ahead of everything. One may hardly have a moment to start thinking: “Ah, another boring summer fresh.. “. When a sudden realization of a complex balance arises. Woodsy and Spicy elements were held tightly together by the citrus and brought into light. Once the complexity was revealed, the citrus pulls back. It’s job was done, the whole was given a direction, a direction of extraordinary fresh.

Now everything settles and blends into harmony. The only thing you are left with is pure clean freshness. Nothing dominates. Nothing sticks out. No sharp edges to be found.

You find yourself with a smile.

Getretener Quark wird breit, nicht stark.
I almost feel sorry for having to completely disagree with my colleague Apicius so often :) For me, there are hardly any differences between the regular Declaration and Declaration Essence, except that Essence has a few more twists. It's quite rare to see a manufacturer actually telling the truth in the naming of a product from a widely expanded range. The brilliant Declaration Cologne, for example, has almost nothing left of the original, which is actually a rather nice barber's scent, but at temperatures like yesterday's, it has definitively lost its right to exist.

Right arm D normal, left arm D Essence, both sides a bittersweet sultry spice mush, impressively reminiscent of the worst eccentric scents from Lutens/Sheldrake. Three test subjects confirmed my impression that both arms smelled absolutely identically bad (the German grammar always provides beautiful words :) and were enthusiastic about my plan to quickly disappear under the shower. Here, Essence really proved to be a tough opponent, and my attempts to cover it up with the righteous Hesperides of L'Eau par Kenzo can only be considered a partial success. No, Declaration Essence hasn't convinced me just yet.

Declaration of Parallel Universes
Here is the second skin test that I took with me from Düsseldorf Airport on the plane to Tunisia. Since we have Wi-Fi in the lobby, I can upload comments from here after writing them on the beach - it would be nice if it were always like this ;) On the test strip, it left a very good, unique impression. Generally, this synthetic re-interpretation of the Cartier and Ellena classic is quite controversial, and reviews tend to lean negative towards the original. Since I couldn't find much to appreciate in Declaration, there were justifiable hopes for Essence. Additionally, because I really like the rosy, also extremely modern-synthetic Declaration d'un Soir.

With Declaration Essence, I feel like I've been transported to a parallel universe where the original doesn't exist and this hybrid has taken its place. Maybe I've watched too much Fringe, but Essence feels really strange - yet also familiar and good. I believe I read that the perfumers for this fragrance didn't build on the DNA of the original, but rather started completely from scratch, relying on their understanding and memory of scent. This would support my déjà vu feeling in green.

This Declaraternative mainly consists of 2 dominant notes: cedarwood and a slightly dirty orange. Just like the original, TdH fans should take a closer look at these Cartier scents and test them out. The woody side initially occupies about 25% of the scent experience, quickly rising to over half during the fragrance's evolution. If such a subjective thing can even be expressed in numbers. The scent also reminds me of a more citrusy Gucci Rush for Men, making it fit perfectly in artificial places like the airport or an office full of PCs. Despite the woodiness, Essence refreshes well, even if it doesn't truly represent the heart or essence of the original. Nevertheless, even Master Ellena would likely appreciate it for its uniqueness.

Bottle: I like the color. Cartier is in the Champions League when it comes to style and details.
Sillage: office-appropriate, and only the cedar note draws a bit more attention.
Longevity: a strong 8 hours underline the clone and lab feeling.

I prefer Essence over the original. I feel somehow more comfortable in this universe and fully understand the artistic reorientation of this declaration. Even if the scent is almost more of a strange woody fragrance than a citrus summer scent.

Traces of Orange
After the regular Déclaration, we now have the “L'Essence” edition. However, this is a completely different fragrance. With partially similar components, a whole different scent character has been realized.

Upon spraying, I first smell - vodka. Really very alcoholic. It takes a brief moment, then I perceive a scent that reminds me of Autan mosquito repellent. Fortunately, that passes quickly. A few citrus notes, and then the fragrance returns to the vodka. I now believe I smell something akin to grain. Perhaps also something floral, but very minimal. After a while, a hint of orange becomes noticeable.

L’Essence de Déclaration is much more reserved than the original Déclaration. There’s no macho attitude, but rather emphasized restraint. It is slightly sweet, but still. I find it difficult to categorize it into a specific fragrance direction. The individual components are understandable if you know the fragrance pyramid. I do notice some identity with the original Déclaration, but what has emerged is something much slimmer and more modern. L’Essence de Déclaration is most closely associated with the theme of orange, but even that is executed with extreme restraint. There’s no comparison with strong orange perfumes like Orange Spice by Creed or the orange waters from Hermès.

In the drydown, the orange bids farewell to an unspectacular woodiness.

Once again, a perfume for men who seek only a light background but do not want to spread perfume clouds around them. The very light orange is only subtly fresh, but very natural. It is far removed from the chemical freshness wonders like Bulgari Acqua Marine or Kenneth Cole's Reaction T-Shirt. As with the original Déclaration, I am convinced by the high quality at a moderate price. Just like in the original Déclaration, the longevity could be better here as well.

Pretty much what the name says: simplified, less spicy, sweeter, and more focused on a Declaration's fundamental musky woody base.

(▲M7) 85% similar to Déclaration, but dirtier, muskier, smokier—no loud citrus!—bergamot is balanced with cistus and immortelle. Recommend.

Essence, being mossy-earthier than the original Déclaration, is masculine spice to the max. Great sillage, fair longevity, elegant bottle.

[Raczej nie] Ostry, słodki zapach to coś czego nie lubię, a ten właśnie taki jest. Coś jakby pieprzno-kwiecisty. Niestety - ma to coś.

A sweeter and warmer composition than the original, the bergamot and cardamom combo is tuned down here and replaced by a tarry incense note.

Spicier than the original with increasing woodiness over time, but still fresh; a slightly dirty orange gives off some light TdH vibes.

I can't notice any difference from the EdT at all. Why do that? I'll stick with the original. A classic.

Fantastic version of the already good original. Woody, almost resinous, slightly sweet. Unfortunately, the base is a bit quiet. A masculine-elegant daily driver.
