marine chameleon
Wow. I love it. I’m going to wax poetic for a minute. I don’t know how to classify this scent. The coral here is a living creature, a chameleon. Marine-floral. Vegetal-mineral. Citrus trees spouting in a rosewater-spiked sea. Balmy, aquatic mandarin. The three chords I can discern are orange, green, and blue.

Orange: imho, the mandarin is the star. I want to say the mandarin here hits the same note as The Body Shop satsuma body butter of my childhood. Eerie, sweet déjà vu.

Green: I’ve always had a visceral dislike for jalapeño and bell pepper scents, so thank god I’m blind to it here. There is a bitter green spike to this scent, which reads chlorophyll-y to my nose. Like waxy, just-snapped leaves.

Blue: I get a strong salty-sea accord. Not beachy/tropical, but more briney/oceanic. Harmonizes really well with the soft rose thread.

Of Les Essences, Corail was the stoutest. This fragrance hit its high note straight out the bottle and played it strong and steady for over twenty-four hours. Three days out from original spritz and I can still catch an echo of it in my hoodie. I’ve never met a citrus that performs like this. My favourite Diptyque to date. I’m sorry, paycheque.

Mental Snapshot: A stone-pebble beach, hidden off sandstone bluffs. Dappled sunshine through plump orange trees, clouds casting mosaics upon the satin blue sea. An Aperol spritz, maybe three. You’re a guest at the White Lotus in Sicily.

tl;dr: 5/5 star Mediterranean resort, would recommend to friend

Warm Salt - Corail Oscuro
After initially writing a long-winded story, I’ve deleted it to say this: Corail Oscuro is ultimately a salt-accord scent with rose playing support. I suspect Symrise’s Sympep(R) is the major player here.

I don’t normally like salt and mineral accords, and maybe it’s my bias for Diptyque, but I still find this a lovely scent. When I first tried it, it felt like a gust of warm air, slightly tropical and sweet from the mandarin. On the skin, the salt really blooms and takes centerstage.

I think Alexandra Carlin did a wonderful job capturing that stony, yet aquatic quality of coral. It’s not my favorite of the five, but it’s interesting and unique to admire on someone else.

Death of Diptyque
I love Diptyque. Other than Frederic Malle, they’re the biggest part of my collection. This new collection, and especially this fragrance, is almost making me swear off the brand for good if they don’t course-correct. Diptyque’s supposed to be about understated elegance. The fragrances are not overbearing, smell “natural”, and seamlessly blend into the background of everyday life, almost like atmospheric background music. Corail Oscuro is a synthetic, screechy mess that’s the antithesis of “natural”. It spits in the face of everything Diptyque stands for.

One small detail that marks the erasure of Diptyque’s legacy: Lunamaris and Lilyphea do not have an “O” sound in their names. Every single fragrance released thus far has an “O” sound (usually in eau) as a nod to Diptyque’s ovals. Clearly whoever’s in charge of this collection has no love or understanding for Diptyque, just making decisions off market research.

Diptyque seems to be losing its brand identity, its creative direction. It seems Diptyque is struggling to recover from the loss of Pescheux (RIP). Instead of slow, thoughtful releases, they released five fragrances at once, ranging from awful to mid. Their main lineup feels very fairly priced. At $230 for the quantity and quality, the EdP feel neither too expensive nor cheap. Trying to peddle far worse fragrances at $330 is a transparent money grab.

There are plenty of other brands that release faceless mid fragrances. Stop trying to appeal to the general market. Appeal to your already-loyal customers instead of alienating them. Diptyque’s customers don’t want synthetic fragrances that last days on the blotter.

Scent
Light, aquatic and fresh with a dash of florals thrown in. Smells like if pink coral had a smell. Unfortunately, the performance is awful.
