The good old days
This, the old version of the Dolce & Gabbana pour Homme, didn't have much in common with the current version, as it was much more intense, richer in facets, had more depth and was more masculine.

Dolce & Gabbana pour Homme was my first signature fragrance. I wore it about the beginning of the 2000s until just before 2010. I could never get enough of him for so long. With him I always felt well wrapped up. He was my faithful companion. Whether at night or at work. Pour Homme was an evergreen and a compliment collector. The flacon was a tangible thing, its shape made it fit perfectly in the hand. Buying a new fragrance was always a great feeling, because the outer packaging was already special, with a blue velvet-like cover and looked much more elegant than the cardboard boxes of all other fragrances.

Without having been involved in perfume at that time, I guess I already liked lavender and sandalwood at that time. Interesting, if you look at it again from today's point of view, there are still two of my favourite scents.

I still remember too well the reactions of one of my colleagues at work. She used to get a big kick out of me wearing this scent. If I had a cup of coffee in my hand to go with it, it was all over with her. She always liked the combination of pour Homme and a fresh coffee very much and so it happened that I had to make a few rounds around her desk with a pot of coffee in my hand. Since she was so enthusiastic about it, she thought that her boyfriend should also smell as good and so she got a small bottling from a perfumery, only to have to report to me the next day, to her sorrow, completely disappointed that the fragrance on her boyfriend probably did not develop the desired notes as it did on my skin. I have to admit, I was enjoying myself
I have spent many wonderful times with this fragrance and experienced great things during it.

It is a pity that it no longer exists in this formulation. But this is exactly where you notice what perfume can do. Because how is it so often with beautiful things? One feeds on memories! And so Pour Homme still manages to put a little smile on my face today.

That's what perfume does to us. It arouses emotions and passion

The First GQ - The First Perfume - The First Commentary
Uff it was a funny year, I was about 13-14 years old when I somehow decided to buy my first perfume.
Since I had no idea and in my class somehow every boy smelled after the same perfume (JPG Le Male), I really wanted something new, something where every girl would keep me in your memory.
So instead of going to the first perfumery, I went to the kiosk around the corner and bought my first "Männer" magazine (The GQ).
I think on the front cover, Halle Berry was photographed, but I can't remember it that well
Anyway, there was a section about perfumes in the magazine and there was the "Dolce Gabbana pour Homme". Somehow I figured that'd be my perfume. So I went to see a Douglas after school and asked for perfume right away. The nice lady brought me to the Dolce Gabbana corner and shot directly from the tester on the strip. She put the test strip in my hand and I smelled it right away. I had no idea what to look out for in a perfume, but somehow I liked the fragrance directly. He didn't smell everyday. There was something citric but also subtle spicy about him. I knew it would be my first perfume.
I've had the scent for almost 20 years now. In the meantime the label has already fallen off and maybe 10-15ml in the bottle. My wife finds the scent old and cheap, which I cannot understand at all, because the scent is a timeless classic for me.
That was my first comment, now I have to return some videotapes.

Solid!
I don’t know how Pour Homme smells today, but I recently acquired an early Euroitalia bottle of this (mostly for nostalgia, as I wore this fragrance in the Nineties, without even loving it that much back then) and all I can say is that it smells, well, really good. Not exciting, not particularly fascinating... but just totally, really good. Almost astonishingly good. All I get is lavender, tobacco, a drop of creamy, slightly orange-infused citrus and a mellow, agreeably sweet base of musk, vetiver and tonka, initially briefly refreshed by a sort of Mediterranean herbal-tea accord in which I think I get mostly sage and something like thyme paired with, well, “something” that reminds me of juicy bittersweet black tea (that may be due to tobacco, though; fresh grounded tobacco has often a tea-like aroma).

The notes may sound a bit generic, while the result is inexplicably complex, totally unique and recognizable, way more than it may seem by reading the composition. In fact I can’t really think of anything similar to this, maybe some facets of vintage Dreamer by Versace for the same tobacco-musk-lavender “clean and warm” base, or some other tobacco designer scents, but that’s a long shot in any case since there’s quite something more – and mostly better – going on in Dolce & Gabbana pour Homme. I guess this uniqueness is due to the way musk, tobacco, tonka and citrus interact, they create “something” really comforting, clean (musk and lavender), slightly sweet and warm (tonka and tobacco, plus that “tea” accord I mentioned above) but with a really classy touch of tart, herbal citrus freshness, which altogether create an uplifting sense of confidence, affability and informality with a sultry shade of class, a perfect balance I rarely found in other fragrances. Guess this is an example of how a skillful, eclectic and mature composition smells like. Maybe uncreative, but not anything has to (try to...) be creative. Truly a soothing classy sillage with just the right hint of clean, smoothly modern and understated “genericness” which makes this fragrance a really enjoyable and solid everyday option, with a particular “youthful” vibe. Quite linear, but if something smells this nice, that’s just a plus.

Given the number of negative reviews I read about Pour Homme I assume that today it smells probably a bit more synthetic and harsh than it used to, and I can really believe that since the quality of Euroitalia works of the Eighties/Nineties was quite much higher if compared to today’s standards among designers – not to mention Dolce & Gabbana usual standards, which make Pour Homme even more a unique standout. The early Made in Italy version surely has some soapy-synthetic feel especially on the musky-lavender notes, but overall it has an undisputable solid quality and a remarkably rich, fulfilling and breezy texture that makes it really worthy a sniff – if not a blind purchase in case of good deals (way more than the nice albeit totally overrated By Man in my opinion, to mention the only other masculine Dolce & Gabbana scent worth some care).

Italian man in the 90's
Dolce & Gabbana, a brand that doesn't have many great fragrances, in fact, i guess this is their best (talking about the masculine ones).

A concoction of citruses, lavender, sage and woods. A simple eau de cologne mixed with a fougère style. Max Gavarry, the perfumer behind this fragrance, managed to create something with a cool water base and brighten it up with an Italian sexy vibe. It has a soapy quality, from the fougère structure and it's very alluring all the way. A typical 90's masculine but with this sexy citruses from a Italian eau de cologne.

The citruses aren't the most natural ones but, for some reason, they work perfectly here with the herbs de provence and the light wood/tonka base. Nothing is sharp here. A pretty smooth fougère that has also a soft tobacco leaf note in the base to blend everything together. Is probably the least perceptive note but it's the one that helps this composition not being boring and has this sexy masculine aura.

Unfortunately, D&G left EuroItalia in late 90's to joined P&G and later, Coty (everything from that era is very forgettable, to be honest) and the version of this classic is also completely different. Much sharper with less quality materials. Recently, the brand joined Shiseido group and they came out with slightly more interesting fragrances but i didn't tried the Pour Homme version yet. I hope the quality was increased as I consider Shiseido as a good brand/group.

But for now, I suggest you to find a EuroItalia version if you want to experience this fragrance in full HD Stereo.
The longevity is also better in this version (+8h) and the sillage is also stronger.
Overall, a great fougeres with some unique qualities.

~ Smooth D&G Casanova ~
~ Based purely on a generous sample gift of the vintage original formulation. This homme invokes in me the scent of a smooth operating Casanova. With it's long lasting lemon/lavender opening it surely had lured in many a wearer and wooed admiring noses in it's true smooth sandalwood sillage! My loyalty to Platinum Egoiste has kept me from discovering other nineties gems but this is one I am glad someone knew it is "a must try" sensual gentleman's scent. The sweet tobacco here is subtle, suave and oozes elegant sophistication. The lingering basenotes to me is where the tonka and wood work their magic captivating my taste. This would be a great D&G to rediscover as it's popularity in the spotlight has decreased but what a statement it could still make! I have never smelled the reformulation and I would be afraid to now and tarnish the image of my treasured 5ml of this masculine perfumery classic.
Kind Regards, Plat ~

If my youth had a smell, this would be it. The new versions can't hold a candle to the OG. Citrus-spices-sweetness. Masterfully done. Salut.

I would say the old formulation is a lot more powerful and masculine. This one has real character. If you can find it, get it.

Don't judge this by its initial sweet citrus blast. It develops into a more peppery and masculine frag. A nice violet tobacco fresh accord.
