She's a beaut'
I received a sample of this wonderful fragrance from my good friend Linda a few weeks ago. ELDO scents never disappoint me and always seem to be extremely well made. The imagery that came into my head once the name of the fragrance was recited to me was of a beautiful cross dressing diva. Her makeup and perfume mixing with harsh accords of her native odor "she" was naturally born with.
She is relaxing after her big show in front of her boudoir. She removes her wig, and adjusts her genitals. Afterwards, when she is back to "normal" she leaves the gay-bar as a normal man, gets into her car and drives home. Her life isn't one of hiding, but, she is however very selective to whom she reveals her secret to.

The top:

Opening with sweet, tart raspberry the beginning of this fragrance is very feminine. Raspberry is complimented well by an earthy-sweet, slightly piney opoponax accord. This fragrance is BUILT upon contradictory/complimentary notes. Whereas the raspberry is very sweet and slightly sour, the opoponax is rather stale and dry.
The iris in the beginning is the contrasting accord, interrupting a sensual slow dance between the ingredients of before.

The middle:

After iris is done with it's spontaneous jittery behavior it begins to tone down, and allow a moist powdery violet to play. Rose bounces onto the scene, with her pink dress and red hair and begins blowing kisses to the bad boy in the room, Leather. The leather in this composition isn't the stuff of normal mens fragrances, this leather is sweet and tender. He's a mommas boy at heart, but doesn't complain when sweet innocent rose offers up her moist femininity to him. Don't be fooled, whist rose an leather dominate the middle of this fragrance, there is always a hint of violet throughout.

The base:

Starts with a slight whiff of patchouli, a unisex accord, herbal, soft, sweet and slightly masculine. While in passing you notice a well dressed man (vetiver) seemingly glaring at you, he is crisp and stern, not like the other patrons to this night club. He is a wall flower but it seems the he is the only thing keeping the place sane, glaring at the patrons who may be getting out of hand. Sandalwood and tonka beans are what wraps up this fragrance. Ending in an unmistakable masculinity, with memories of being a female.

FABULOUS

Awful
Etat Libre d'Orange has for me a few misses among it hits, fragrances that i can get the concept but wonder what they were thinking when they tied it with the chosen fragrance. Delicious Closet Queen got me thinking why a fragrance with a provocative name and idea gets such a horrible and unpleasant musky and plastic violet leaf confection. Really, are they being ironic and saying that most mens that wear this kind of average scent are closet gays? Or is this a joke in the reverse way, meaning that a closet gay wanted to be, in fact, more masculine? Either way, sounds ofensive and of bad taste. If they haven't launched that monster they call Secretions Magnifique i would pick this one as their worst scent.

The Coming-Out of a Raspberry
Delicious Closet Queen is not my favorite EldO; it's too indecisive for that. All EldOs carry certain contradictions within them, making them super interesting to me, and their names are cleverly chosen. This one also allows for numerous interpretations, but for me, it hints at the leathery raspberry that develops on my skin.
If you don't closely follow the scent, and I haven't done so until now, you might not perceive the development, but Delicious Closet Queen is not as innocently wearable as it seems at first sniff.
The top note is sweet-fruity and smells like mainstream celebrity fragrances, slightly synthetic, raspberry-like, almost gourmand.
THEN! - the raspberry gets naughty.
It wraps itself in leather and dips into a woody-green patchouli cream.
Sounds yuck, but it's not like that.
The raspberry is just living out its fantasies and becomes mature and interesting!
It then reaches for a cigarette "afterwards" and completely loses its sweet raspberry nature. A slight smokiness in the base suits it exceptionally well.
Now it has arrived.
Now the scent is a true EldO.
I never thought a harmless raspberry could develop such eroticism.
From now on, I will enjoy my raspberry smoothie much more cautiously.

At first I was afraid, I was petrified...
one might think when first (sniffing) Etat Libre d'Oranges Delicious Closet Queen, in the opening words of Gloria Gaynor's immortal 'I will survive'.

It always takes a little time after the end of a decade to recognize its defining characteristics - and to distinguish them from the preceding and succeeding decades. In the year 2000, it was still difficult to clearly outline and define the pop and everyday cultural DNA of the 90s - by 2007 (the year Delicious Closet Queen was created), the distance was great enough, and one nostalgically remembered Friends and Ally McBeal, the trashy dance floor from Snap's 'Rhythm is a dancer' to Haddaway and Dr. Alban, CK One, colorful Levi's 501, Cindy, Claudia, Christy, Linda, and Naomi, Melrose Place and Monica Lewinsky - oh, I could go on forever...

Delicious Closet Queen, 'the delicious closet sister', is the scent of a youth in the years between 1990 and 1999 - when one expected the end of the world at the moment of transitioning to the year 2000 ('Y2K' it was called back then - perhaps someone still remembers). The 90s were the glorious years of my youth and early adolescence, and - whether lady, gentleman, or still undecided - how this scent was perceived back then was considered dignified, grand, and wonderful! It combines a multi-faceted sweetness of flowers, fruits, and soft woods (delightfully sexy and synthetic all together!) with a casualness and disco coolness that one either experiences in their twenties - or never! (10% of the 70% are for the memories) This sweetness was still seen as exciting and provocative for men in the 90s - it was varied countless times during those years - and was especially found in the second half of the decade wherever young men were sweating with desire and testosterone.

'At first I was afraid, I was petrified...' - so begins 'I will survive', alongside 'I am what I am' (also by Gloria Gaynor) and Jimmy Somerville's 'Smalltown boy' one of the eternal gay anthems - particularly in the 90s, even though all were clearly older. It continues: '...kept thinkin' I could never live without you by my side. But then I spent so many nights thinking how you did me wrong - and I grew strong - and I learned how to get along...' - until Etat Libre d'Oranges Delicious Closet Queen olfactorily reanimated the 90s nearly a decade later.

Conclusion: a precise fragrance-historical quote - in its essence terribly outdated and simultaneously touching and fascinating in the accuracy of its citation. If I didn't know better, I would rummage through my wardrobe for a colorful Levi's 501 and a tank top - and check where the in-crowd will be storming the clubs on Saturday nights after two. I know better. No worries.

Clapping Intermezzo?
Did George Michael use this fragrance during his clapping intermezzo in Los Angeles? Who knows!

Taking the name and the pyramid into account, plus the reputation that ELdO fragrances have, this should be an orgy in many respects!

But I can give the all-clear! There is neither a glory hole nor any other cheap clapping sex on offer here. The toilet stone does not gain new honors, and a clamp sister with her pants down does not come to mind either.

Of course, the question arises here as well: What does the "sin water" smell like?

Answer: Almost harmless, but only almost!

The opening is, as Louce already mentioned, somewhat clinical, but that quickly dissipates and allows a subtly sweet heart note to fully unfold. On my skin, the rose comes through a bit stronger than the other notes.

With the base, a hint of leather wafts through the luxurious public restroom, but is quickly caught up and overshadowed by the balsamic notes.

After my urinous scent experience with Encens et Bubblegum, that name would have suited this fragrance better!

Joop Homme! in a chlorinated swimming pool. Sweet-vanilla fruit, abstract ozonic freshness of a freshly cleaned school bathroom. Different, but really good.

Consciously kept synthetic and that's why it's good. At least there's no pretense of being natural: bright, fruity, woody.

After a long time, finally a scent that really blows me away.
The combination of raspberry, sandalwood,
and violet is incredibly sexy.

The scent opens creamy (Iris) fruity (Raspberry) and transitions through leather into a fine woody note. I really like it!

Fruity-herb-floral and lightly sweetened scent that has an increasingly earthy progression. A bit overly constructed, but subtle enough.

Not really my thing either. Very synthetic raspberry, like throat lozenges. The weak sillage is definitely a plus here. If anything, for work.

Sweet toilet cleaner! Very synthetic and plastic-heavy. Lick the toilet bowl and enjoy.. I don't like it.
