A Sparkling and Powdery Tobacco
Last but not least, this review is about Extrême Pureté, one of the three gems under the Les Signes de Grès series that I blindly bought, almost underrated and unknown. I read they designed these three perfumes to pay homage to the style and elegance of the Grès house. The packaging follows a line common to all peers in the collection, with a bottle with broad shoulders and a narrow bottom, a flat golden T-shaped cap, and a juice and label of different colors.
In the beginning, the fragrance shows fresh Hesperides veins with almost aldehydic nuances, which change after a few minutes, enhancing a bright point of talc bergamot. That harsh explosion is like the one we find in CD Homme Cologne, the same refreshing and harsh vibe with hints of bitter grapefruit and lemon. But there is more to the opening, notably a more dusty and green rather than milky aroma coming from the fig leaves. The initial phase is very citrusy, which reminds me of the classic Italian male Eau de Cologne that tends more to citrus and floral accords.
In the heart, the fragrance softens, and the luminous citrus fades, highlighting a warm layer that contains contributions of balsamic myrrh from the bottom and a return of the fig that remains for a long time, always dry and never sweet or fruity. The presence of cinnamon does not interfere with the other notes, and it is not the classic Christmas spice. A spicy freshness that intensifies in the heart soon reaches the green and the crunchy note of the fig, that of slightly moist tobacco that blends with citrus fruits and releases a scent similar to fresh tangerine peels dried over a source of heat. A sort of lemon vetiver even hovers in the middle phase, perhaps present as a ghost note. I find the cinnamon and tobacco heart different from what I would have expected. It is a fresh and sparkling heart, not at all smoky or noticeably spicy.
On the finish, the scent becomes more and more woody and resinous, raising the dry section of the cedar, which becomes dominant, with amber reflections derived from the presence of coumarins, or toasted tonka and creamy vanilla, which promote the darker and more virile aspect of the fragrance.
Within the trio of fragrances of the Les Signes de Grès collection, Extrême Pureté is the one with the freshest profile and that follows a completely different aromatic line, which is best suited to spring and summer use, ideal to wear in the office. its sillage and duration are moderate. Also good for some light sporting activities, outdoor parties.
I base this review upon a 100ml (3.4 fl. oz.) bottle I own since March 2021.
