Behind Ivy Veils and Lemon Trees
A "tactile" fragrance that I feel I can almost touch. An old, crumbling wall, where ivy trails down in long streams, behind it a "Spanish garden" where citrus fruits ripen, interspersed with cedars and Spanish firs, whose pointed, spiky branches jut out prominently. Below, various herbs, basil, sage, lavender, and several more. Boxwoods, trimmed into large spheres, radiate their herbaceous-green and mysterious scent most delightfully in the afternoon after rain. Just like the ivy, which has an almost resinous aroma. Green, woody, and sharply defined, like an old snapshot in Agfa color. The secret of the Grès fragrance lies, among other things, in the very subtle way the flowers have been used. A rather spicy dog rose comes in as a splash of color amidst all that woody-citrusy green. Together with the delicate, blue iris, lying like a veil over everything.
A "strange" yet familiar déjà vu creeps in on silent feet. Where have I smelled something similar before? And in what context?
Perhaps on one of the many mini-golf courses I have had the pleasure of visiting? They often feature the most beautiful and quirky plantings, according to the tastes of the respective club members.
I think of Kelheim in Bavaria. The city so mysterious and ancient, ivy-covered walls and tree trunks included. And the mini-golf course, filled with rather old trees, on which that very ivy climbs. And boxwoods, "islands," adorned with all sorts of herbs and flowers.
A spontaneous memory is usually the right one. Just no lemon trees to be found.
A wonderful, very unsweet and herbaceous-green chypre!

"Like You to Me, So I to You!"
... or one hand washes the other, freely translated as quid pro quo. Also known from "The Silence of the Lambs" where Hannibal Lecter demands honesty from Agent Sterling, questioning why it tormented her when the lambs suddenly fell silent at her uncle's. I don't want to go into detail here. Those who know the film know what I mean.
The above pyramid is a joke! In 1976, no perfumer would have come up with the idea of mixing just 3 ingredients into a fragrance, and Quiproquo doesn't smell like that either.
The scent starts with the typical cologne note of an old-fashioned chypre. Very lemony, but not zesty flashy, rather dark, sun-ripened lemons.
"Only" green notes in the heart? At least dust iris is playing in the orchestra pit. The conductor is the Grinch and he smokes chain.
Leather notes weren't used in the 1970s (I've read), but wood notes, which created a leather-like scent effect.
This note comes through here distant and fine. Or is it the green forest spirit? I wouldn't be surprised if they also processed forest spirits alongside civet and castoreum back then.
Now, no kidding. Quiproquo is a dark green, almost harsh chypre, wonderfully old-fashioned, but not granny-like. For strapping ladies and gentlemen who were around 20 back then and for bold people of today.

it was not meant to be...
Quiproquo was an attempt by Parfums Grès to offer the not-so-successful men's fragrance "Grès Pour Homme" from 1966 to the ladies a decade later in a somewhat softer formulation. But in the times of YSL's Opium and Lauder's Cinnabar, it was hard to please the worldly woman wearing cork wedge sandals and oversized sunglasses with such a scent. Too green, too bitter, too masculine...

Relatively quickly abandoned, a 3rd rebirth was to follow in 1996... but this time again male as "Homme de Grès"

It is a pity that this extremely successful creation could not establish itself, neither as Quiproquo, nor as Grès pour Homme, nor as Homme des Grès.... :-(

If you ever have the chance, definitely give it a try. Those who enjoy woody-green chypre notes will be particularly pampered here :-)

If life gives you lemons,
make it a blissfully sour yellow light,
let it be chypre, summer bright,
even in the bitter darkest green corners of life.

Elves & fauns dance through the mossy enchanted forest, drink from the chalices of early bloomers, and frolic on leather-covered wooden benches.

Only able to smell it on the sprayer due to lack of content: Awesome green stuff (citrusy top note missing) on a woody base.
Classy!

Summer: Among the many strong & cool citrus herbs, the cat looks forward to the wood-moss base and rubs against a piece of leather.

A green chypre masterpiece that must have been pretty amazing once. Unfortunately, the citrus top note isn't as strong anymore. Still intriguing!

Leather-green-herb-chypre. Powerful + yet very delicate, intricate. Similar to the vintage (!) "Cabochard", but with even more pepper in...

Spicy floral chypre that has a slight gasoline touch at first for my nose. Elegant, classic, and probably not very contemporary anymore.

Cool - cheerful, green, then vibrant woods, moss, and tangy ivy. A boxwood note in the background.
A secret garden in sunny AND shady.
