Sea of white flower for little money
Cheap fun with a 90s feel. What do I mean by that exactly? Hard to say. For a few years now, I've noticed that heavier and heavier fragrances (that's purely subjective again, of course) are popular and heavily hyped.
Cabotine, on the other hand, is quiet and reminds me in a good way of times gone by - but without seeming old-fashioned.
The fragrance was an absolute blind buy, I mean 10€ for 100ml, what can you do wrong? At first glance I thought the cap was supposed to be broccoli, but no, it's flowers....
So my expectation was a light and floral scent. The first spray made me cringe briefly: acrid and not exactly what I want to wear on my skin. But after a few minutes, green notes evolved into a bouquet of white flowers. And that's exactly how it stays. Unfortunately, I can't make out the base notes mentioned here, but that doesn't matter. It simply remains pleasantly unagitated.

Sunny picnic in the early nineties
This is delightful! I blind-bought the EDP version out of curiosity because of all the reviews and comparisons to Dior’s Tendre Poison, and it was a risky one for me, because green scents often tickle my nostrils the wrong way and can be even headache-inducing. This is definitely not the case! Cabotine is green honey, dewy freshness, spring flowers and sticky new leaves and buds. It’s so happy and carefree that it took my mind off all the horrors of the world I’ve been contemplating when I woke up.

This is a retro fragrance, no mistake, but retro in a very good way. It’s like a window to the past. I don’t understand all the “old lady” references I sometimes see in reviews on various resources. When I smell this, I can see my childhood and my mother’s perfume cabinet. I don’t know which one of those 80s frags Cabotine reminds me of, but I definitely smelled something like this when I used to bring a stool to reach for the shelf where mom kept her treasures. Lancome Ô Oui? Revillon Turbulences? Combination of both on my little wrists?

Cabotine EDP smells like late eighties and early nineties, yes, but it smells like young people back then, like oversized plastic jewelry and sequins, curled voluminous hairstyles, flowy fabrics, high-heeled sandals, overdone makeup. Yet all these hip made-up young people are out in the sun on the green having a picnic and drinking a sparkling white wine. It’s fresh, airy, festive, natural, lively. I don’t know how else to describe it. It’s sweet, like the wine can be sweet – not like candy. It has this interesting balance of innocence and sexiness, which makes it sound youthful, exuberant, and carefree. Old-lady, indeed!

With respect to Tendre Poison, I don’t think I can give a very detailed comparison because my only acquaintance with Dior’s discontinued scent is from a miniature I’ve recently bought, and I can’t say how well it’s preserved. All I can say is that I see the similarity, but Cabotine is sweeter and less green – which I prefer, I must say. If such a thing existed in perfume vocabulary, I'd say it's green versus chartreuse (just the color of Cabotine!)

Beautiful, timeless, green floral
Both the EDT and EDP are a beautiful warm, green, floral.. citrus notes, dark fruits, voluptuous tuberose, honeyed ylang ylang, very slightly tropical ginger lily and peppery carnation with a slightly soapy, slightly dirty civet feel. Smelled up close, the edt feels more sparkly, fresh and sunny and the EDP has a more rounded warmer slightly more musky ambery powdery note and lasts longer than the EDT on my skin. I layer them with Al-Rehab Shadha, which is a lot like Cabotine to me on the drydown, except Shadha lasts a lot longer on me, and oddly enough feels richer and has more depth with much more pronounced jasmine and rose notes.
One of the reasons I got both of these is that I’ve been searching for a Tendre Poison dupe but they don’t remind me of it at all, maybe very distantly, but they don’t bring that feeling that Tendre Poison brought to me, maybe it was the asafoetida and lack of civet. Would love to be able to smell it again.

Sweet Green Floral
While Ebay prices are going up and up for hard-to-find bottles of Dior's Tendre Poison, its cheaper alternative, Gres Cabotine seems to be decreasing in price. I know which one I'd buy.

Gres Cabotine is a unique fragrance, one that truly stands out from the crowd. Honestly, it's not my personal cup of tea, however I do appreciate it. If green florals are your thing, and you haven't already tried Cabotine, now would be the perfect time to find a bottle.

The composition is quite complex, so it's not surprising that the scent varies with every wearing. Some days it smells like a tropical floral on my skin, other days it's quite soapy and sweet. The notes that never seem to change are the fuzzy peach, sweet tangerine, hyacinth, cassia, ginger and watery jasmine.

I suppose you could call Cabotine a classic, seeing that it's been on the market since I was born. It has spawned many flankers since, with the delightful Cabotine Rose being one of them.

Cabotine reminds me of a lush rainforest with small rays of sunshine peeking through the gaps of the trees above. This is not far off Dior's Tendre Poison which made me think of long lost tribes in the jungle. Both of them signalled the beginning of an interesting fragrance genre.

The longevity of Cabotine is superb, as is the moderate to strong sillage. As a word of warning, this fragrance should be applied sparingly. Thank goodness this gem is still relatively easy to find. It has my tick of approval.

Green florals in a humid rainforest
Opens soapy, I can’t detect notes of tart citrus- maybe just the peel. Then, there is an unusual, unidentifiable floral middle - at once musky, green without being fresh, bready (maybe the tuberose?), very slightly plummy. It makes me visualize sun warmed leaves, flowers heated by summer and beginning to wilt, and an impression of moistness like a jungle. It’s a strongly heady scent while having very light sillage.

Not for me, I like the bitterness of galbanum in my green florals like in Vent Vert, but an entry into the artificial rainforest category of perfumes. Makes me think of Eden or Synthetic Nature.
