Black Light
Well noticeable, but not intrusive, the grapefruit mixes in the opening bouquet and treats itself to a delicate orange blossom and equally mild bergamot for its star appearance. Sparkling fruity, yet floral and very refined, all emerge from the elegant bottle. It takes a while for the citrus fruit to take a step back and allow the other aromas to speak. Thus, the fruity note gradually disappears, leaving predominantly rose and patchouli in the spotlight, which unite with the top note. From the initial sprightliness, a softer phase of the fragrance develops, and above all, considerably more depth. As time goes by, LN only gets better. The base begins to sneak up step by step to the scene, the dance of the notes, or however one’s imagination may depict this olfactory experience in one’s mind. Very gently, nothing is rushed. While at first the scent had a white to orange hue, it eventually transitions from there to pink and dark red with the heart, and with the base, it becomes increasingly darker, ultimately reaching the signature color of its bottle. It may not appear pitch black, but certainly a black that, when held against the light, allows brief glimpses of the darkest brown to anthracite. Thus, the base gives the fragrance its soul. And that is mystical and elegant at the same time, very mature yet playfully enchanting, vibrant yet of noble softness. In my perception, LN, when it has "arrived" and is at peace with itself, is a blend of Black Opium and Coco Mademoiselle. The best of these two fragrances as essence, with a touch of magic from the house of Grès on top. Voilà! Longevity and sillage are decent. At home, LN may feel comfortable in every season, as it never becomes too heavy or overwhelming, but rather allows a certain flirtation alongside its noble elegance and skillfully blurs the boundaries. Thus, one feels this way when spraying and discovering the fragrance.
Lumière Noire...dangerous and mysterious, alluring and tempting, sensual and full of magic!
But this glow here is not the one that magically attracts moths.
This "Black Light" primarily attracts (out-)swarming perfumistas!

The True Black Opium
Actually, neither the YSL wannabe, Black Opium, nor this fragrance here deserves to be called Black Opium. Nothing is intoxicating or even as intriguing as the sleep-inducing drug. No, both are rather sweet, lovely, and peaceful in nature. However, this one initially smells just like the Black Opium from YSL, but it carries a much more realistic name. YSL is left far behind. A fragrance that operates with plastic bags and is by no means one that I would really want to acquire. It simply comes across as too artificial, too bland. Somehow forced, but not well executed. It piqued my interest, but then I was quite disappointed. I confess: It was because of the black, albeit very kitschy bottle.

Now let's turn to Lumiere Noire. The fragrance is 1. much softer, 2. of much higher quality, and 3. significantly more attractive than the Black Opium from YSL. Lumiere Noire also has an elegant name and does not come across as so shrill as the YSL. The bottle is very solidly crafted and has a good weight. In short: The eyes are delighted when they see the bottle.

Lumiere Noire starts just as sweet as Black Opium. However, L.N. gnaws much more gently at the wearer than the YSL. It is a pleasant sweetness that gently cradles me into dreams that I enjoy the most. The fragrance is slightly citrusy, sweetened with lovely orange blossom and a hint of blueberry. Yes, I feel that the fragrance has a somewhat berry-like quality, just like Black Opium. However, Black Opium in my memory is more like a bland raspberry tea with a splash of lemon. L.N., on the other hand, does not immediately hang the berry touch on the nail, but lets it meander through the fragrance development for a while.

The heart is soon reached. Patchouli, of a rather gentle nature, settles in the middle. Surrounded by the berry touch and a very high-quality vanilla that proves to be extremely rich and abundant. Beautiful oriental tones illuminate the fragrance, and my thoughts are swept away by the Orient Express. Rose is just a passing phantom that comes to my mind briefly. The main theme here is definitely patchouli with vanilla. Not overwhelming and passionate. No, very skillfully and purposefully complemented, so that they form a good connection. I imagine a hint of chocolate, although this only gently tickles my nose. Amber then envelops the heart like a warm wall that has been raised for protection. A wonderful feeling for not even €25 per 100ml. One is happy to indulge again without feeling too guilty.

When the heart quietly bids farewell, only a lukewarm, oriental veil remains, which seems to be resinous. Vanilla is stifled in its infancy as the last component.

Sillage and longevity are in the upper field, and the bottle deserves a smooth, full score. Because of its simplicity, which also comes across as very natural and elegant.

I think this is how YSL should have done it. Because this is the true Black Opium. They only resemble each other at the beginning, where YSL is still bearable, but then their paths diverge. YSL completely goes off track, while Lumiere Noire has taken the right one.

The better Black Opium!
In search of a perfume that is similar to YSL's Black Opium but not as extremely sweet, I came across LN.

The top note is indeed very, very similar to BO, but not as piercing, rather a bit finer.
Everything is wonderfully intertwined. A fruity-sweet mix of bergamot, grapefruit, and orange blossom.
The sillage at this point is also very strong, so be cautious with the dosage!

In the heart note, the fragrance gains depth through the rose and patchouli.
Nevertheless, it is not "noire" as the name suggests, but the sweetness is still somewhat noticeable.
At this stage, the sillage is not as strong as at the beginning, but still very perceptible!

After about 4 hours, you arrive at the base note. Here, the scent is truly beautifully vanilla and close to the skin.

My conclusion:
For anyone who finds Black Opium too piercing and strong or simply does not have the budget for it anymore, Lumiere Noire is just right!!
LN is indeed very similar to BO, just a bit more harmonious and a bit quieter.
The price-performance ratio is more than excellent! For about €26 per 100ml, you get a truly good quality fragrance!
As soon as my bottle is empty, I will definitely order it again!
For me, Lumiere Noir is clearly the better Black Opium!

Oriental with Summery Charm
Through the simply elegant, unembellished bottle with the cap already known from other Grès fragrances and the noble black-gold presentation, I was involuntarily drawn to Lumiere Noire.
The coloring and name evoke the expectation of an encounter with something dark, deep, mysterious, perhaps spicy or smoky, but in any case something strong, thus less suitable for a summer day.
From dusk onwards, it would then be welcome to lean in that direction as a companion to dimly lit jazz cellars or my rustic favorite restaurant in the always pleasantly tempered natural stone vaulted cellar.

With these thoughts, I eagerly envelop myself in the fragrance.
The black light embraces me like a recent acquaintance who wore Black Opium.
And indeed, I find the top note of Lumière Noire very similar to the heart note of Black Opium, with a fruity touch, though less sweet and noticeably weaker.
Quite pleasant, but miles away from dark-mysterious-sinful.
Fortunately, the fruitiness gradually dissipates and the fragrance gains depth, with patchouli keeping the unfolding floral notes in check with a soft rein.
It develops through the base notes into a friendly oriental without spice, with a floral touch that I classify as absolutely suitable for a summer day.

From the heart note onwards, I perceive Lumière Noire as weakly detectable.
Not so, however, for my surroundings. There, it is likely noticed positively even from a few meters away.
It seems to blend into my personality in such a way that I do not notice it as “foreign,” and that is exactly what bothers me: I want to smell the fragrance I wear. Not constantly and overwhelmingly, but now and then catch a whiff of it in motion.
This makes the relationship not only with other people interesting but also with a fragrance: never to be completely one, to feel the other in a pleasant way, to complement each other without dissolving into one another.

Nevertheless, I believe Lumière Noire is a successful, appealing composition with a high feel-good factor for all seasons.

I can agree that it’s a mix of Black Opium and Coco Mademoiselle. I find it a bit more sensual and warmer. Better.

A somewhat artificial floral note that wavers indecisively between powdery and creamy, yet is still fairly solid.

I would have guessed the 90s. A subtly sweet, rather bright floral bouquet with a musky creamy finish. Slightly artificial. Nice.

Subtle, soft-ambery, delicate fruits with gentle rose on underlying patchouli. Mysterious evenings for two...

A powerful, deep scent, patchouli carries enchanting roses and ripe fruits. The orange blossom is slightly smoky, fading over time.

Definitely worth a try, just like many things from Grés that are underrated! Delicately floral-oriental with a sensually warm base, it has real class and flair!

Like Coco Mademoiselle on me, just softer and not quite as sharp.

Unfortunately, for my nose, it's more of an "old lady scent"... Such a shame, but great value for money and it really smells elegant! A hidden gem!

A mix of Coco Mademoiselle and Black Opium. 2 bestsellers in 1. Still disappointing due to the lack of originality.
Mediocre.
