A Darker, Unsweetened Vanilla Perfume
Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Ylang & Vanille was one of the early members of the Aqua Allegoria series, launched pre-Y2K, and the superior quality of the composition witnesses this fact. Although I do not wear Ylang & Vanille all that often, I find that it is a nice change from the ubiquitous sweet vanilla fragrances which have become more and more popular of late.
AA Ylang & Vanille offers a darker presentation of vanilla, but not in the sense of being more concentrated and potent in vanilla itself. Instead, ylang-ylang imparts a dark quality to the vanilla, making this perfume more of a floriental than a gourmand perfume. The jasmine, too, is detectable to my nose, but the ylang-ylang is far more prominent.
This creation smells especially nice as it heats up on the skin under a sweater collar. The closest composition to this one, of those which I've tried, is Hermès Hermessence Vanille Galante, which, too, is more a floral than a gourmand creation. However, I find Ylang & Vanille to be more of a pleasure to wear, as it seems harmonious and never jarring from start to finish.
I feel fortunate to have acquired one of the limited edition bottles of this appealing perfume, a relic of Guerlain's glorious past.
