Dark patchouli meets dazzling aldehydes
Patchouli is a scent that invokes strong memories for me. As a child, one of my grandmas would wear pure patchouli oil as her main scent, and because of that it has always remained one of my favorite scents. Initially, I was not a massive fan of Patchouli Paris, as I found it to stray too far away from the namesake patchouli, but after wearing it multiple times, I think I was just misunderstanding what I was smelling. This fragrance perfectly blends the dirty, earthy, and spicy nature of patchouli with the warmth and sweetness of vanilla and the sparkling nature of the aldehydes. The opening is quite vanilla-iris dominant with your typical stickiness from the iris being present, but as it dries the patchouli becomes the most central note. I think the contrast between the darkness and depth of the patchouli against the bright and vibrant aldehydes and iris create a unique balance that I would not have ever thought would work, but it's masterfully executed in this case. There is just a hint of smoke in the dry down, which I think is partially from the patchouli, but from an ambery-resin note I pick up as well. Patchouli Paris is overall, a fantastic and unique fragrance of extreme quality.
Out of the fragrances I've tried from the L'Art & La Matière lineup, this is my favorite so far, and easily one of my favorite patchouli based fragrances as well. It manages to capture the essence of pure patchouli extract while giving it a gorgeous modern twist to keep things interesting. I can see this one being a bit more divisive, but I think it's some of the most masterful work to come out of Guerlain in some time.
