Scent of a time traveller
This is HISTORY! Founders of this perfume house knew, what they do want to create and narrate about the bygone epochs.

Old dusty books, lushy flowers dried between pages of old books, time-honored enamelled furnitures. Nothing new, nothing fresh, nothing modern. This is the real art of story-telling without words.

Destination: indoors, older people, both gender, for long conversations.

Like a Pointillist Painting
Although I found the caraway note a bit strong initially, Histoires de Parfums 1876 eventually smooths out into a gorgeous oriental rose reminiscent to my nose of Tauer UNE ROSE CHYPREE. There is lots of texture to this tightly woven composition which is not what I'd call a rose perfume so much as a tapestry of scents.

This reminds me of impressionist or pointillist paintings, which up close look like a bunch of individual brush strokes but from far away produce a whole much more meaningful than the sum of its parts. Beautiful! I'd love to add a bottle of this excellent creation—with great longevity and big sillage, too—to my collection.

Naughty or Smoky?
I want to keep it brief. I tested the little spy Mata Hari yesterday.
OmG, she has something up her sleeve - or was it the décolletage?
The beginning hits you with citrus fruits, spices, and cumin all at once.
Intense, really! Then it turns green... Vetiver green and bitter. The rose is bitter and the guaiac wood. Cinnamon overshadows everything, and violet desperately tries to bring some calm into the mix. Whoever manages to stand out among all these notes... well, they are probably still arguing about it.
Then it gets quieter and somehow also naughtier. Or was it smokier? The scent doesn't really develop beautifully. But it's not really unpleasant either. It's such a mishmash. It smells like walking into a cold room where smoking took place the night before. The air is still "pregnant" with the spy's scent. It doesn't smell like what one might expect in a brothel. Not in that naughty way, but rather dangerous, and one should approach this lady with caution. It's a warm, vanilla, spice-heavy, and slightly sour scent that transforms into a cold diva standing in the room, smoking, and piercing you with her gaze from head to toe. She says nothing but wants to know everything.

Subtle Chypre
My thanks to Michelangela for this ultimate spy!

Mata Hari always exuded a proper hint of exoticism in films. Of course, the divine Greta Garbo in the role of the Dutch dancer from the Belle Époque is unforgettable.

Like in a good spy movie, the opening of this perfume is quite harmless. An almost boring top note of citrus fruits and a bit of sweet lychee doesn't really promise any thrills.

But behind this charming olfactory masquerade lies a sinful floral heart that has only one intention: seduction! The cinnamon adds a certain exotic note, and the cumin doesn't really come through on my skin.

The base impresses with a noble woodiness and a skillful touch of animalistic eroticism thanks to the right pinch of musk. After all, the dancing Dutchwoman didn't just use her charms on the dance floor, and this fact has been very attractively realized here.

Despite the flowers, woods, and spices, this perfume is very subtle. For this reason, the spy theme is cleverly executed here.

Edit almost a year later..
I just realized I completely forgot to describe the scent.
This is because I couldn't describe it back then, and I find that I still can't describe it today. But I can fully support Esther Knatterton (see above) in her clear insights: No cinnamon, but mint or menthol? Refreshing and yet not. Sweetness very subtle. Nothing is really dominant, less is more, but there is enough of everything. The nonexistent honey is a real showstopper, not in the top note, but 100% perceivable at the spray nozzle, along with woody notes that appear like magic ink, then disappear again on a chypre green parchment. My silly beginner rating should be corrected from 60 to 80%. Thank you Michelangela for the great deal! Mata Hari has been bought out.

This is how I would imagine an old elegant theatre or opera house in Victorian-era London to smell like.

A tipsy little rose
danced in front of the mirror.
A lipstick in hand,
a tear in the eye.
It was a bit sweaty too.

Ah, you fatal dark sweetness,
reveal your secret to me!
The rose has a hint of cumin,
otherwise sandalwood, cinnamon - no polecat.

The seductive dancer is well captured: Exotic lychee, bare skin with cumin, musk and cinnamon; not to mention floral allure.

A rose bursting with life/desire/passion. Juicy-silky. First exotic, fruity, then woody. I don't get any cumin. Lasts long & softly.

Beautiful + sweet floral mix starting with lychee scent: resinous-woody-smoky + spicy, green vetiver, a hint of spicy-gourmand. Medium longevity.

The little sister of Ambre Sultan, she dances lightly through the spice market, a rose in her slightly damp décolletage. Enchantress.

A lot of strong spices, it feels a bit overwhelming. The cumin makes the scent feel a bit dirty.

No fuss, but enough cumin to build tension. Soft elegant mix, very subtle, with some breaks. Quiet and interesting..

Lots of fruit, more iris powder, and beautiful wood. The usual high quality of this HdP fragrance. I really like it and it's a great unisex scent.
