Jacomo de Jacomo
Today again after 36 years I smell the same smell I had as a high school student. "Jacomo de Jacomo" arrived today, and at that time in 1988, "Ronhill Black" was a Yugoslavian clone of "Jacomo de Jacomo". Only a scent can evoke some ancient memories and memories of dear people so intensely. Not to repeat everything written below..."Jacomo" is a classic but I have to mention that "Krka" in the eighties did a great job.

Typical 80's masculine scent although unique due to cloves
Jacomo de Jacomo is a typical 80's style masculine fragrance. What I found unique about it is the cloves note which hangs around pretty much for the entire life of the scent. The clove note isn't overpowering or Christmas-y like those cinnamon-clove pine cones sold around the holidays. In fact, I wouldn't have minded had the cloves been a tad stronger. Also has the expected oak moss & patch component that is so good in the classic fragrances from that time. It also has a touch of cigarette ashtray, but very subtle. Nowhere near as strong as with Quorum. The only downer with Jacomo is that the longevity isn't that great. After about 5 hours, all you're left with is a pretty close skin scent. Projection is also average after about an hour. I'll still hold on to my bottle because it is a pretty unique scent and I can always respray as needed.

Pure black magic
So I’ll admit it: I blind bought a 100 ml tester bottle of this bad boy. I smashed the Buy Now button once I saw reviewers were associating it with Type O Negative songs. Plus, it was only $25. Sue me.

But man, am I glad I did! As a lifelong New Englander, believe me when I say Jacomo de Jacomo is the black cloak you drape yourself in once the skies darken and the temperatures start to really drop. The second I tested this on my skin, I was immediately transported to childhood memories of attending fairs and festivals on chilly fall days, complete with hay rides and Barbecue cook-offs.

This is as close as you can get to the color black without oud or loud animalics. If notes like patchouli or cumin generally give you pause, rest assured: Jacomo is all smoke and cloves with an a hint of leather and a fresh layer of fougere to pull it all together.

If you want something that will make you feel you’re turning into a dragon when you spray it on, give this a shot. This is exactly the kind of scent I desperately wanted Passion by Elizabeth Taylor, Poison by Dior, Black Orchid by Tom Ford, and Voice of the Snake by Gucci to be for me.

I’m obsessed.

The Dark Column
Where there is light, there is also darkness. A Conditio sine qua non, an indispensable prerequisite.
Jacomo, this dark Jacob beyond a lentil dish, the heavenly ladder and the stone peace column, is said to have wrestled with celestial and human beings.
The scent is powerful, to say the least.

Christian Mathieu offers an idiosyncratic composition.
I will settle for the slightly altered version from 2011, as it has replaced the original.
To get straight to the point, the current fragrance has a more animalistic tone. Otherwise, it is as dark as usual.

The opening of the fragrance caused a sensation in 1980. Not a single hesperid, no lightness.
Galbanum and cardamom - I suspect the harsh, sexual, black subspecies - smoke in a rough manner. Very distinctive and masculine. Cumin adds a slightly animalistic spice but doesn't sweat too much. Here it is, the battle-scarred body, battered and scarred.

The only and necessary source of light is provided by the solid lavender. But it is an ultraviolet light that envelops the body astrally.
A play of shadows. The harsh black contours reach a state of violet floating.

The body is clothed in black leather, which, well-tanned and rounded, gives a striking figure, quite tailored.

And now an unusually exciting counterpoint begins to pull in the opposite direction, a true feat of strength.
Oakmoss is lightly spiced with cinnamon, more clove, and variations of rose impressions - those gentle petals guarded by woody thorns. This bright, soapy, and solid response tends to the tormented body. Very gentle and unobtrusive, it heals the wounds and instills hope.

Between harsh severity and soothing love, a peculiar beauty emerged. Confidence and faith were tested and have been restored.

The finish is accompanied by a straightforward patchouli. Towards the end, it becomes increasingly present as a reminder of the earthly. The long night of struggle is over. The scarred body limps on the earth. But the soul has reached unimaginable heights.

The bottle underwent a successful redesign. Originally resembling a large lighter with a black body - the name printed in large white letters - and a white flip cap, the new design better showcases the fragrance theme.
No more flip cap, nor any prominent inscription.
Instead, a black column with a silver band and an embossed label. Very clear, elegantly shaped, and strong. The surface material is uniquely matte and soft, a delight for the sense of touch.
From the small spray head, you get a short but dense cloud of fragrance, very precise.

The longevity is well represented in the upper range, as the scent easily lasts a day.
Not so the sillage. The fragrance trail retreats to body proximity after the second hour but remains distinctly perceptible there. Just move, and you leave a subtle scent trail.

To convey my impression of the different versions more vividly, I invoke a thoughtful, often misunderstood swimmer.

He always tries to swim his laps as late as possible in the evening, so he is less disturbed. The darkness of the evening lends a mystical atmosphere to the pool lighting, the water glows invitingly.
It is these precious moments that bring him the most joy and contemplation.
Exhausted after training, he lets himself drift on the water's surface. The pitch-black night at the hall windows, the bluish light in the water, the gentle splashing of the wave movements, everything comes together as a whole. And he floats in it.

In the changing room, he remembers past evenings. Enveloped by Jacomo, his faithful companion, he becomes aware of the temporal dimension. The earthly space undergoes constant change.
His current black jacket is cut a bit differently, but the leather still feels familiar.
With black Ray-Bans, he used to enjoy himself on a dimly lit dance floor. There was something connecting with the others. They also wore sunglasses in the dark. And when the line fell, they raised their hands protectively in front of an invisible sun.
All day hiding from the sun, waiting for the golden one…
“Seconds” by Human League was never more mystical…

Today he also notices the change in Jacomo; it is more body-focused, has more foundation.
For sun protection, he has remained loyal to the brand; now it is a black aviator.
Thanks to AirPods, he can wirelessly fill the swimming hall with sound for a few minutes as the last bath guest, without anyone hearing it.
“PDA” by Interpol.
He sees his reflection in the dark window, the light of the pool outlines his contours spectrally.

The other is there and yet not.

Spicy Mystique on a Green Base
Here, the successor fragrance is at least as good as the "original"! And the classy ingredients, arranged slightly differently and varied, create a completely unique mood.
The lavender is mysteriously hidden in slightly rough spices, yet still quite detectable.
The strictly green, almost "razor-sharp" galbanum sets its woody accents.
What follows has something "mystical" about it! Spicy clove darkness vies for the light of the delicate geranium, only to unite into a blackish red.
The moss is already peeking around the corner, sharing its presence with earthy patchouli, inky birch tar, and fine woods.
Not innocent in the "mystical scent" is also a good portion of vetiver (missing in the fragrance pyramid) and the cumin, which creates a bittersweet note in the background.
In any case, the "newer" Jacomo has won the favor of my nose and my spirit. Without much effort, it joins the ranks of the "Mystical Elixirs"! :-))

Have this 2011 version and it smell ok but not lasting as original from 1980. Timeless scent anyway.

Like Silences, a successful reinterpretation, but a bit quieter than before. Herbal, spicy, woody, base of moss, leather, clove. Great!
