A version of Noir de Noir?
First of all, I don’t know why, but every online shop and catalogue lists the notes for this one differently. To clarify, this is what I found on my box of Sultane Oud:
Top notes: Rose, Saffron, Geranium
Middle Notes: Patchouli, Raspberry, Oud
Base Notes: Haitian vetiver, Tonka beans
This is a very warm, woody, enveloping kind of scent, leaning unisex, even though Jeanne Arthes released this fragrance in two versions – Sultane Oud for women and Sultan Men Oud for men. I haven’t sampled Sultan Men Oud, but this one, Sultane Oud reminds me strongly of Tom Ford’s Noir de Noir. I guess this was the intent since Jeanne Arthes is famous for releasing their very affordable takes on popular elite fragrances: Cassandra is a version of Chanel No 5, Cobra is a version of vintage Poison, Promenade a Montmartre is a version of Coco Mademoiselle, etc.
I don’t know how these two compare wrist-to-wrist. Of course, the difference will be pronounced if you compare one against the other. However, I noticed the similarity while wearing those separately without looking for it. I just applied Sultane Oud and went about my day, when after couple of hours I was like, “Wait a minute! This is familiar?” So, I supposed it’s safe to say that Sultane Oud is in the same style as Noir de Noir. Maybe not a perfect dupe, but definitely worth trying if you like Noir de Noir but cannot afford the full bottle, since those motherlovers come with hefty price tags. I don’t know whether it’s due to quality ingredients or it’s sheer marketing, but they are intended to be deluxe and out of reach for most buyers.
Sultane Oud doesn’t have the chocolate-y qualities of Noir de Noir that come from truffle, but overall it creates very similar impression.
Also, I have a hard time classifying it, because it's either mature feminine or youthful masculine as I perceive it. Yet I guess it can be worn by anyone who likes deep, woody, chypre scents.
