Brilliant balancing act

This smells like a green tea i used to drink. Bitter herbs, fresh flowers with a fruity sweetness when i first sniffed it. After, i get an ambery resinous smell that, with the fruit, just makes this warmer, like a dried apricot, but the musk i only get towards the end, a very clean one, well mixed and blended with the orris root. In fact that is what i get from this: well blended and also dynamic. All the ingredients seem to work together in an effortless way but they also change and morph.

Aesop for the Occult

Smoked sage, varnished wood, eucalyptus mist, dry menthol, green tea. Imagine if Aesop branched into the occult.

My favourite scent of all time to date. Full stop. Instant aromatherapy. No matter the time of year or my mood, I keep coming back to DLS. It's aromatic, green, boreal, vespertine. Airy enough to feel clean, but without treading into soapy spa tincture, and herbal enough to have a bite of earthiness, without feeling mulchy. A sage stick, without the acridity of smoke.

It's a true unisex scent with admirable longevity for a Byredo; I spray it on my travel scarf before long-haul flights and it will last the whole slog through to the return flight. I promise I'm not a shill, but I own two large bottles and several of its candle formulation (Sweet Grass), and live in low-grade anxiety that one day they'll retire it and I'll need to empty my savings to secure a larger stockpile. Since meeting De Los Santos, I compare every scent that's followed to it.

Mental Snapshot: You're a herbology professor in haute couture. You frequent places like old Catholic churches, which have been converted into a steam saunas, or teahouses in a modern art galleries. You can guess strangers' star signs to 89% accuracy.

Sweet and synthetic ambroxan

Another simplistic fragrance from byredo.

Starts with sweet floral notes, there is a delicious fruity accord. Quickly settles to a rosy-ambroxan smell. From top to middle notes, the sweetness is very well preserved. As the smell matures, you get plenty of clean ambroxan with soft musks. I could never detect any palo santo which was a note i was waiting to get. After that opening, i expected a much richer fragrance.

Well, i think the top notes are pretty good. De los Santos gives a great fruity note at the start. After that you get a rosy ambroxan and musky ambroxan. If you don’t mind synthetic base notes of clean quality, you may like this. Nothing really special here.

Herbal and aromatic

Upon the initial dry down, it has an almost vinegar-like scent which I usually get with a pink pepper note, though that fades in about 5 minutes and leaves behind a super screechy sage scent. Brings me back to elementary school field trips to the woods where we would learn about different types of flora. Way too aromatic and herbal for me, not at all how I would ever want to smell. Has minimal sillage and lasts about 4-5 hours. Saw that this was compared to some fragrances but I disagree. Thé Noir 29 Eau de Parfum but I disagree as I find it much woodier. You Eau de Parfum is much muskier with light fruity notes. You Doux smells like palo santo and frankincense.

Magical Development

At first sniff, my nose recoiled a bit, too "minty," "herbaceous," almost "healthy." But then, an almost magical development. The scent melts away, becoming soft and sensual, like a second skin. It is full of contradictions, pure and clear yet warm and sensual, cheeky and velvety at the same time. It reflects the crisp coziness of winter just as much as the warm breeze on a bare summer arm. Intangible yet always present. I don’t want to be without it anymore.
