Channeling Janis Joplin

This could be a just another speakeasy scent but there is something that sets it apart from the others. Its supposed to be inspired by Bob Dylan in a cafe filled with people drinking cognac on leather couches and smoking. A place where people would meet to talk about their ideals and working towards a better future. I think they captured that atmosphere but I think they got the wrong musician. It might be a bit pedantic, but Bob Dylan is known for quitting heavy drinking and drugs early in his career. I would say this fragrance reminds me more of Janis Joplin. Its spicy and filled with the kind of energy that allowed her to excel in a male dominated landscape. Its her smoky voice with a hint of her hangover. Its her warmth and sweetness that connected her with the audience. This is a fragrance for Rock N Roll women, and some men too.

Some have compared this fragrance to Blazing Sam from Penhaligions. Its close. They are both a spicy, boozy, and woody fragrance. I would say that this fragrance isn't as sweet as Blazing Sam. There is more sharp spice and wood in this fragrance. It should also be noted that this fragrance is far more affordable compared to Blazing Sam's $315 for 75ml.

This fragrance has fairly strong projection and creates a nice scent bubble around you. While sharp and spicy, its not overbearing. The fragrance lasted about 7 hours on my skin. It only comes in one size, 78ml for €190.

Blowing In The Beat

Beat Cafe is the kind of fragrance one wears to spend an evening sitting in the darkest corner of a nightclub listening to jazz, drinking aged spirits and chain smoking Gitanes cigarettes like the protagonist of an avant-garde French film. This is the smell of a "poète maudit", a bearded bohemian that wears old corduroy and leather and quotes Jean Paul Sartre at every occasion. Tobacco and booze, the breakfast of champions.

Unfortunately our character will be back home early because the performance just isn't there; the experience is over shortly after it gets started like a short-lived display of hipster fireworks.

tl;dr: dark, resinous tobacco with a hint of cognac, wood and spice. More bourgeois than countercultural.

Authentic cognac with freshly processed tobacco

I became aware of Beat Cafe through a nice statement. Admittedly, the name also appealed to me, although I don't think it has anything to do with the fragrance itself, but coffee always attracts me.

I don't smell coffee here, but still something else beautiful. Beat Cafe has a charm of its own that I have never experienced in a fragrance before. The peppery note seemed extremely familiar to me, as I would also consider the similar fragrance "Portraits - The Blazing Mister Sam | Penhaligon's" already mentioned to be very similar, but this similarity is lost in the course, more on the course.

Starting with a pleasant cognac, I liked the scent the first time I tried it. Beat Cafe is a good example of how to incorporate alcoholic notes into fragrances. No sweet and loud impact like in "Angels' Share | Kilian" , no spicy-sweet boozy half-hearted alcoholic experience like in Enigma pour Homme Parfum , no questionable name-baiting game like in Cognac Cafe . No, here I briefly get an authentic cognac note, not burning, not fruity, not sweet, slightly spicy and a little dry. The Beat Cafe gives off this fine glass of cognac with a pinch of tart black pepper. The top note completely won me over.
This is followed by tobacco and leather, I don't really go for labdanum, but it would probably have worked well too. This tobacco and leather combination is strong and gentle at the same time, as soon as the notes become stronger, they have a dominant upswing. As quickly as they come in, however, they also retreat again, but remain tartly spicy and attractive. Tobacco is not dry, but rather fresh after the harvest and immediately processed, without smelling too tart or mossy. The black leather is really very delicate and in the background, which is why the fragrance is hardly classified as leathery.
The base is made up of cedarwood and benzoin. The cedarwood is somewhat like cognac or a cognac barrel. Slightly sweet and woody. Benzoin then adds a resinous sweetness. At no point is the sweetness disturbing or too strong, nor is the Beat Cafe sticky. In the late drydown, the tobacco becomes even drier.

I can't explain how they came up with the name, coffee is not an ingredient as described and the fragrance doesn't evoke any memories of a visit to a café.

I particularly like the cognac opening and the presentation of the tobacco. The base with the sweet, alcoholic woody note also brings Beat Cafe to a wonderful close. A fine fragrance for cooler days. Unfortunately, the longevity is a little weak for a fragrance of this kind, meaning that it quickly fades when it is around zero degrees outside. Nevertheless, a fine spicy pleasure.

The concept fits..

This week I was professionally in Munich. Of course a short stopover at Ludwig Beck's perfumery and beauty department was planned. While browsing my eyes fell on the presentation of the Jusbox fragrances. I think it's very harmonious. The LPs in the background in front then the scents in the colorful flacons built. The design of the bottles is super. I like the look and I was really happy because my partner is a musician and I always look for scents where this passion can be found. Beat Café would have fitted perfectly as a birthday present, because he was born in the 60's. Light citric fragrances do nothing for him either, he already needs strong fragrances with good durability and Sillage. The fragrance pyramid also directly appealed to me, as I also like fragrances with leather chords for myself. I'm not yet sure whether the beat Café will be able to create fragrances that directly awaken images in my head. A beautiful fragrance, that's out of the question, but when I smelled it I was missing a bit of something special, something distinctive/game, so that I would really buy it directly. Benzoin and cedar wood make it soft and velvety. But I missed the spice at the first smell. The pepper came to me on the skin hardly you. For a fragrance that stands for the 60s, I need a little more.
