Golden Summer

I don't get the chance to try many Kerosene perfumes, but when a friend offered a decant of this one I jumped at it. Previously i had only tried the highly regarded Follow (reference coffee), and now I was keen to see what one of my favourite childhood summers smelled like.

Summer of 84: Review 07

Smells like a childhood memory: having the time of your life at a water park, enjoying popsicles and cantaloupe rinds as you’re still drenched in water as you just came out of the pool, leaving the popsicle wrappers behind and half eaten melon rinds behind, creating the most heavenly and fresh combo ever seen.

9.8/10. Top 2 fragrance of all time for me.

Grapefruit Supreme

To repeat what others have said: this is grapefruit. It goes on smelling like the fruit of the grapefruit and it dry-downs as more grapefruit -- perhaps in drydown with a slight undertone of an aquatic flavor that I find makes me think more of grapefruit rind than the grapefruit juice. I experienced nothing unpleasant in any way about it, all I get is a natural smelling grapefruit scent. The Kerosene scents I have tried are all quality, natural scents (as opposed to being synthetic or chemical). This is no exception. It smells natural. The duration is fabulous and the sillage (even hours later) moderate.

So, ultimately, it all comes down to whether you might want to have -- probably for summer days -- the scent of grapefruit. If that intrigues you, if you find grapefruit uplifting, or just am intrigued by it, try it. Otherwise, it's really probably not for you.

Summer Citrus, Winter Melon

Divine grapefruit and other citrus in the opening, a blast of fresh realistic fruit rind, peeling real citrus and the oils are bursting from the skin. Absolute masterpiece in that regard. The lemon cleaner accord almost emerges after that but if you are careful in your appreciation you can see it's not cleaner, it's candy. And then it goes back and forth to my nose from absolutely realistic citrus to citrus candy and I enjoy both.

I personally do not like most things aquatic, but this is a rare exception because the citrus is strong enough to keep it extremely fresh with a shadow of aquatic notes in the deep background. Some days those aquatics move to the front, something that seems to change seasonally. I prefer this one in summer to winter when the lighter fruits recede and the aquatic and heavy melon move forward.

Grapefruit Nuclear Bomb

Opens with a giant blast of grapefruit - it's not just the juice, its the pulp, rind, and citrus oils all smushed together into a bottle. Perfectly bitter and perfectly sweet notes counter each other and makes the first spray incredibly photorealistic. There is an effervescence to the opening, as if this concoction of grapefruit has been tinged with carbonation and it is as refreshing as a soda on a hot summer day. As it dries, the grapefruit stays front and center, but more mellow notes come out, and it loses some of its fizzy bubbly qualities. Melon note may be correct, but it melts into other fruits as it dries and ends up as a faintly fruity aquatic scent after 6-7 hours of great projection. A delightful summertime mood lifter but would potentially be less fit for colder weather.
