Summer of 84: Review 07

Smells like a childhood memory: having the time of your life at a water park, enjoying popsicles and cantaloupe rinds as you’re still drenched in water as you just came out of the pool, leaving the popsicle wrappers behind and half eaten melon rinds behind, creating the most heavenly and fresh combo ever seen.

9.8/10. Top 2 fragrance of all time for me.

Golden Summer

I don't get the chance to try many Kerosene perfumes, but when a friend offered a decant of this one I jumped at it. Previously i had only tried the highly regarded Follow (reference coffee), and now I was keen to see what one of my favourite childhood summers smelled like.

Grapefruit Nuclear Bomb

Opens with a giant blast of grapefruit - it's not just the juice, its the pulp, rind, and citrus oils all smushed together into a bottle. Perfectly bitter and perfectly sweet notes counter each other and makes the first spray incredibly photorealistic. There is an effervescence to the opening, as if this concoction of grapefruit has been tinged with carbonation and it is as refreshing as a soda on a hot summer day. As it dries, the grapefruit stays front and center, but more mellow notes come out, and it loses some of its fizzy bubbly qualities. Melon note may be correct, but it melts into other fruits as it dries and ends up as a faintly fruity aquatic scent after 6-7 hours of great projection. A delightful summertime mood lifter but would potentially be less fit for colder weather.

The Beach

'You’re eating a grapefruit one morning, dreading your presentation later. Sunlight spills across the table. It’s too nice out to go to work today.

You get in the car anyway. Don Henley’s “The Boys of Summer” comes on the radio and suddenly it’s 1984 again.

Instead of merging onto the highway, you veer off and roll down the windows. You follow the breeze and cruise past Venice Beach. You find a parking spot, call in sick, and hang up before they can ask questions.

You change into an old swimsuit from the backseat and walk towards the ocean. You’re finally in the sand with just a towel between you and the world.

You close your eyes and drift back to that carefree summer—Mary Lou Retton’s perfect 10, biking with friends, peroxide in your hair, melting popsicles, sunburned shoulders, your dad slicing melon in the backyard. You’d never felt more alive.

Hours pass. You drive home sunburnt and sandy. As you walk through the door, your husband looks up and says, “You smell like the beach.” You should probably shower, but instead, you sink into the couch and turn on the TV. Seinfeld is on. '

Rare gem: fruity but not cloying/jammy

Super photorealistic grapefruit opening. I very pleasantly surprised at how long the grapefruit lasts! I don't think I've ever had such a complete citrus (oil from the peel, bitterness from the pith, tang from the flesh) or a citrus last so long. Personally I'm very sensitive to sweetness in scents and this is absolutely not cloying.

It dries down to a nice fizzy aquatic musk (I hesitate to use the word musk because while the scent softens, it's still rather light and lacks the depth the word 'musk' evokes ykwim), and there is a hint of melon (cantaloupe/cucumbery imo, def not watermelon like in the picture) but it's rather faint and refreshing.

Sillage and longevity are both superb for such a fresh, clean aquatic. For me, full bottle worthy.
