the aftermath of the holidays

this smells like the calm after stressful, hectic, and loud holidays. It feels like curling up in a warm blanket in front of a fireplace as snow falls. There’s warm and smooth molasses, with a spiced nutmeg, and sweet woody vanilla. It’s spicy but comforting, sweet and warm, like a hug. Nothing here is overbearing, there’s a perfect amount of spice, of sweetness, of woodiness, it all blends beautifully.

Icy and Spicy

To my nose this is nothing like any of Kerosene's other compositions. The notes in this work together to create, intentionally or not, a clove accord. If I didn't know anything about the intended notes I would have said it's mainly clove. There's a simplicity and cool to this one that I really enjoy. It is icy and spicy.

It's winter and your friend, who smokes cloves, is wearing a big sweater. Warm enough that they don't even need a jacket. They hug you.

a dream by a cabin's fireplace

when i was browsing kerosene fragrances, i was a bit hesitant to get a sampler of this at first because i thought it would lean heavily masculine and be overbearingly smoky and woody on me. but upon having sprayed it on me, i was immediately proven wrong. this frag starts off as with a slightly woody, very spicy - but overall, cozily warm - opening. winter of 99 dries down to a smooth, almost vanilla-y amber scent that is so reminiscent of baking gingersnap cookies during the dead of winter for me. someone once described this as being akin to those scented pinecones you find in craft stores mixed with the essence of baking, and this is exactly what you get. this truly resembles the essence of winter, and has become an instant, addictive fave for me.

1999 indeed

In 1999 I had a phase where I smoked clove cigarettes for about six months. Spraying Kerosene’s Winter of 99 smells exactly like a freshly opened pack, but in a good way. Memories of sitting with friends on their balcony, smoking cloves like it made me somehow cooler than anyone in my vicinity…good times.

This brings back great memories, but for me, unless I was wearing a leather jacket and headed to a bar, it’s going to stay in the bottle.

Fireplace going in a wooded cabin

This is the consequence, if you don't have spare time for your hobby.
Dried up samples! In the short snippets of time, when I do have a spare moment, I buy too many samples. Cut to when I don't have time to try them (for over half a year, if not more) and they dry up.

I cannot throw them away, so this review is just for sh*ts and giggles. No respectable fragrance enthusiast would consider this a fair review!

Anyhow, I found two Kerosene samples. Followed and Winter of 99. If you saw my post on stories, you would have seen that Followed looks unscathed, whereas Winter of 99 has dried down to one-quarter of what the juice should be.

This oughta be good...

Woods, molasses, nutmeg and vanilla. Sounds absolutely divine! Even though it's spring, today is a cold and rainy day, so the scent is perfect.

From the atomizer, it reminds me a lot of Sweetly Known by Kerosene.
Sweet, spicy and with notes of cardamom.

Suspiciously similar to Sweetly Known, but as soon as Winter of 99 starts to dry down, the woodiness appears. It is a warm and comforting scent of woods, spices and molasses. Juuust a tint of nutmeg. Absolutely gorgeous. Yes, I own By the Fireplace, Memoirs of a Trespasser, Sweetly Known, and Lune Feline, which all dance in the same realm (but are oh-so different), however, Winter of 99 would have its own place in my collection without of doubt.
Why? Because I don't have a woody and spicy vanilla fragrance with the depth and character of nutmeg! The more it settles onto my skin, the more it becomes darker, richer and more dry. The sweetness is there to soften the scent, but it is by far a woody and spicy fragrance.

Cozied up in a cabin with the fireplace going, a cup of spiced black coffee in hand, and a snow blizzard outside.
