Falling in love in the middle of an incense store
Kerosene is a house that doesn’t play when it comes to the strength of their scents. Of all the ones I’ve tried, I have always had an issue with the invasiveness (i.e. too loud and too intense). I’m all for strong scents, but they aren’t feasible to wear daily (for my life at least!). So when I finally tried Promises, Promises, I was so happy to find that it wasn’t too powerful.

As for the scent profile, it reminds me a lot of Diptyque Eau Duelle EDP but more smokey, powdery, and musky. It’s definitely more of an autumnal vanilla, with its deep spiciness and resinous amber. It’s got a cloud-like quality to it but isn’t necessarily a “light” scent if that makes sense. It transports me to an incense store / spice store in India. In that same store, they’re also selling vanilla perfume oils that some beautiful girl is buying to wear. Not gourmand sweet, but not so dry that there isn’t any sweetness at all. Nicely balanced.

As I mentioned before, this particular Kerosene isn’t as BOOM POW as many of the others this house offers. But it’s not a weak scent by any means. It’s a soft scent that lasts and lasts without ever shouting. It’s going to be a beautiful scent for the cool and crips fall weather and I’m going to enjoy using through my 10 ml before getting a full bottle. I also think time and maceration will help to deepens and sweeten the vanilla for anyone who didn’t find this one sweet enough.

Woody Mysterious Vanilla
Personally, give this frag like 3 mins to dry before forming an opinion. When i first sprayed it, it smells like vanilla extract from the bottle - very alcohol forward, a weird artifical sweetness. But after a few minutes, it was easier to understand. For me it has hints of smoky, woody notes ontop of the obvious vanilla that give it that kerosene spunk. Not incense per say, but I imagine this is how you’d smell if you wore a sweet vanilla perfume to the catholic church and left with a hint of that balsamic, warm incense wafting through your hair. Reminds me of YSL Babycat (it’s not a dupe or even trying to be babycat DNA, just feels like they live in the same world)

I’d say if you are expecting gourmand/super sweet vanilla icing style scent, you won’t be a fan. But if you like woody/ambery/smokey scents with a hint of sweetness, this could be a good choice!

John Pegg makes a vanilla fragrance the only way John knows how (very well)
John Pegg's amber accords have always been a favorite of mine. They're sweet, but not too sweet, with plenty of resinous notes to make it complex and enjoyable. He's always had a good amber too; his first perfume R'oud Elements features a subtle amber, and he's since explored some sweeter ambers in the likes of Unknown Pleasures and Follow/ Followed. One thing in common with all of these is that amber plays a supporting role to some other notes. In Promises, Promises, however, amber plays a starring role.

Well a co-starring role. This is as much a vanilla fragrance as it is an amber one. John has kicked the resins in the amber accord up a ton, giving us a balsamic, spice-like, almost smoky amber that is heavenly. I can understand the incense comparisons for sure. The amber still has that slight sweetness to it, giving the fragrance a cozy warmth. The amber plays well with vanilla, which has a naturally sweet and woody bent to it. The musk in this adds a powdery/dry aspect to the fragrance which I very much enjoy, as it moves the fragrance away from a vanilla sap or dough to a vanilla powder.

The resinous notes seem to concentrated closer to the skin, whereas the vanilla and sweet notes have better projection. This has an effect of being a pleasant slightly-sweet vanilla from afar, and getting more resinous and complex as one gets closer to the person wearing Promises, Promises.

Overall, a very good linear scent from Kerosene and John Pegg. An incredible unisex vanilla that will be staying in my cold-weather rotation for a very long time.

Somewhat unique vanilla amber, good performance and balance.
Finally sampling one of the two 2024 releases by the house of Kerosene – Promises, Promises – a sweet, spicy, resinous vanilla, a mix of vanilla, amber, and musk as listed notes. For me, it walks the line between familiarity and uniqueness in that I don’t think any fragrance quite smells like it but there’s a comfort and coziness in the vanilla blend that’s not too heavy, spicy, or overwrought. I think it’s potentially a perfect match for those looking for a vanilla fragrance that haven’t quite been able to find theirs and for fans of vanilla fragrances looking for something a bit different. There is a heartiness to its resinous with an abundance of balsam or smoke, almost a wheatlike golden resiliency that’s not too heavy. Quite easily lovable even if not among the most stunning of the house’s releases.

As with the rest of the line, this is EDP concentration, priced at $152 at 100ml and sold via the usual points of sale, including the house site and US boutiques like Luckyscent and Ministry of Scent. And as with pretty much any fragrance in the line, the performance is outstanding. This remains a top brand in terms of quality, reliability, creativity, performance, and affordability. Really a stellar US brand if others haven’t checked it out. My very favorite of the house and an all-time favorite is Blackmail, but I love a number of perfumes in the catalogue.

Overall, I think this is quite outstanding and I’d strongly consider buying a bottle.

I dont think this house is for me
The scents i have tried from this house has not landed in the way i wanted. This one is no different. It isnt a horrible scent but it’s not what im looking for or was expecting. Also trying this in the summer probably wasnt the best, im going to come back to it when it’s colder out.
Very incense heavy but also mixed with like an essential oil shop lol.
I barely get vanilla from it , what i do get is like a “smoky” vanilla which im just not a fan of in general.

Rich vanilla, warm amber, soft musk. Powdery, resinous, with hints of smoke & spice. A cozy, complex and uniquely comforting scent profile.

a very subdued, unobtrusive, and musky vanilla scent. i wouldn't call this a true gourmand per se... Promises x2 gets better w/ maceration.

Amber sweetened with vanilla and dusted with musk has never been my thing, plus the scent feels too static and lacks a kick.

I think it resembles Alambar - sweet, slightly smoky amber and vanilla. Not new, but I like it.
