Tamed dominatrix
When i generously poured Whips & Roses on my skin this morning, with such a playful name, it is no secret i was looking for new thrills. Only roses themselves exhibit soft petals and hard thorns equally, always ready to give you both pain and pleasure: just like any romance (or any professional dominatrix) that can be properly called so.

The best part of Whips & Roses to me is the opening: a piercing rose note that is more a top than a bottom, sheathed in a strange accord of black leather plus something synthetic, greasy and sweetish that reminds me to plasticine . Please dont read "synthetic" as it is a bad thing! It is strange enough to make me intrigued and be out of the beaten track, and smells good enough to be glad of wearing it on your skin. It is not a dirty scent, but it is physical enough to be sexy. Like the stuffy air of a bedroom, foul and flowery at the same time...

Whips & Roses is never loud, and is as about roses as it is about leather. This rose note is high pitched, and powerful, but it never manages to dominate the whole fragance. A cosmetic iris rounds the leather, giving the impression of a clean skin. Powdery, dusty, refreshed by a healthy dose of citruses, you can easily wear this fragance to the office or the gym. The jasmine and the gardenia are very low profile, just enough to add a warm sensuality without giving their typical femininity. The fragance stays always sexy, but not as sexual as its beginning.

The rose stems pressence brings an interesting greenness over the clean, fresh musk, but the rose´s voice lacks authority (and insolence) as the fragance evolves. I would presonally prefer the blood orange and the bergamot more silent, but i found Whips & Roses very enjoyable. The final outcome is a light, fresh, greasy leather with butched-up rose nuances.

Tea Rose without the Petals
John Pegg, the perfumer of Kerosene, has a huge fan club, and the hype which precedes his perfumes naturally sets up expectations. He has been hailed as some sort of Wunderkind self-taught perfumer who began working out of his garage. I believe that when he first got started, this was an edgy, cool and exceptional thing to do. These days, not so much so. Today, "self-taught" perfumers are sporing like mushrooms, as though to prove that anyone can mix essential and fragrance oils together. And of course they can: there's certainly no law against it!

WHIPS AND ROSES to my nose is closer to THORNS AND HYACINTH. The opening smells decidedly of tea rose without the petals, as though the "rose stems"--listed thus among the notes--were thrown into a blender and pureed, the petals having been reserved perhaps for the production of an independent batch of rose water or soap.

As this perfume dries down, it smacks more and more of hyacinth and less and less of even the green part of roses. Moreover, the expansive hyacinth-like note (which may be mimicked in perfumery through the use of the very same molecules used to produce the scent of rose stems, for all I know!) mutes all of the other alleged notes of the composition.

Not a rose perfume, not a leather perfume. There is a slight powdery wood in here somewhere, but overall I find WHIPS AND ROSES to be a rather cold and sterile, muted-floral green.

Good Thorns
A rose, just clipped from a thorned bush, is what you get with WHIPS AND ROSES. Only it's as upon the inhale, your nose isn't deep into the bud but up against the stem. It smells of a real rose STEM. It's unique, like no perfume you've ever sampled, but the longevity and projection are sadly thorns, too easily stripped away.

The Rose Whip
A rose scent like a thunderclap - Whips and Roses is not without reason wrapped in leather. Who is as old as I am and can still remember the first film by Otto, where he forgets the name of the fine restaurant (Crème de la Crème) and instead ends up at Chrome de la Chrome? Despite the bright dark pink bottle, I immediately and absolutely think of that place (“How does an Eskimo pee?”). NurdieHartenkomminGarten.

Whips and Roses hits you with the roses with such force that it knocks you out of your leather sandals. Fat, frontal, furious. Forget everything you’ve thought about roses so far. Forget pink, forget sweet, forget charming, forget cute, forget playful. John Pegg’s kerosene rose is loud, flashy, strong, shrill. Super fresh, super green, super juicy. Here, in addition to the rose petals, the leaves, stems, and thorns have also been processed. To make sure it’s not too quiet, bergamot and blood orange are allowed to amplify the roar. At times even a bit biting and razor-sharp. Attention: lemon face! Like bitten into the yellow fruit - with peel, of course. The top note is so full of intensity that it blasts through the nose directly into the brain. Unusual, captivating, bold - but definitely appealing and by no means unpleasant. A sour fruitiness with depth and volume.

Musk is known to be a congenial partner of the rose, and the thunder rose also takes advantage of its benefits. Although, of course, the musk holds its own here and is anything but fluffy-sweet. The rose sweetness actually diminishes, and the musk has muscles. No animal in sight, but still the musk is confidently compact and perhaps already a bit cumbersome. And yet, a slight creaminess spreads around the rose. A bit dark-purring-soft, to round off the sharp edges a little. But still far beyond all sheep-cloud fluffiness. From now on, the scent is declared unisex - if a man is not afraid of roses. One thing is certain: THIS rose is not a typical rose. It sends sensitive noses fleeing, whether with or without a y-chromosome.

And then comes the leather, which always makes me a bit anxious. And indeed, this is not a cuddly soft thin light gray suede, under which you could read a newspaper, but rather noble, honest black leather without studs. Clear, embedded, powerful, and requires some getting used to. The rose power holds its ground, and the musk is now drawn to the dark side of the force. It smells striking, edgy, prickly. Whips and Roses does not want to cuddle, that’s for sure. But it does smell good, just not so subtly and unobtrusively. Pleasing is something else. The rose whip certainly does not suit every occasion; you need desire and willingness for it. Because it stays with you for a long time, and you share it with those around you. Uncompromising.

And in the end, it becomes a bit more conciliatory. Rounder and softer, without giving up its three main characters, which, however, come closer together in the drydown, intertwining and appearing as an independent musk-leather rose that I have not smelled before.

And two more words about the bottle: big cinema. Finest craftsmanship, no plastic in sight, but rather lacquer, metal, leather - unembellished yet with character. Tactile and visually a feast for the eyes. A little bondage bottle to keep the wild rose in check. *whip!*

Double Life?
Do you know that feeling? Old Hollywood movies where the seemingly demure leading lady pulls out her hairpin in the crucial scene, shakes her flowing mane, and takes off her dark, strict glasses? The perceptive viewer and the hero realize at that moment what true beauty stands before them.

With "Whips and Roses," it's the opposite...

I immediately have a picture in my mind: a slender, dark-haired beauty in a pink little costume, swinging a pink fragrance ribbon of wonderful roses behind her, swaying her hips, elegant and sweet, extravagant and floral, self-assured and relaxed, charmingly mastering the office routine.

But in the evening, her true face reveals itself: in a black leather suit, high-gloss over-the-knee patent boots, hair slicked back tightly, and wearing a strict teacher's glasses. A scent of floor polish, no, floor shiner permeates her almost clinically clean apartment, everything perfectly prepared... The smile freezes on her lips as she sensually drags her small, hard leather whip over the edge of the chair, waiting for her first client of the day... and woe to him... he makes her wait...

An interesting scent that seemingly doesn't fit together, yet it doesn't let me go - flaring up again and again, sometimes the rose, sometimes the leather... long-lasting and dominant.

Green rose for sadomasochistic ritual: I whip you with thorns. Not sweet, not rosy, not seductive... No mercy!

Rose with stem & leaf (minty, plant-juicy), candy-like orange (sweet-sour), hinted leather (bitter). The texture is velvety. Good!

Authentic, very soft rose and zesty blood orange,
fresh green, and a whole lot of cashmeran. Leather? Maybe white leather...

The interplay with the leather makes the rose feel dull, and fruity notes don't help anymore. Matte, blunt - unsexy. Missed the mark.

The fresh orange opening quickly gives way to the star: freshly cut rose. A delightful spring joy.

Either the sample is off or the scent is really that harsh. After 1 hour it's nicer, but before that it was like Maggi and tomato leaf with leather!

An exceptional scent where the rose stems and a very soft leather take center stage. A hint of makeup? Innovative!
