All currant, no cream

Creamy and fruity is a dream combination to me, so I was very excited to try this long-discontinued scent. I also love Jo Malone's Elderflower Cordial, which was originally issued under the name Elderflower & Gooseberry in the same collection as Redcurrant & Cream, so my hopes really were up.

Well, this is not a bad scent by any means, it's just not very creamy and for sure doesn't smell like realistic cream. I only get red and black currants and raspberry on a soft musky base. It's sweet, a bit sour and kind of fizzy. The fizziness makes me think of a Lush store full of bath bombs and bubble bars. Not sure which one exactly, maybe The Comforter or just a mix of them all. This trait wears off in the drydown, but otherwise the scent doesn't change all that much. Just berries and white musk, that's it.

So, this is a cute, joyful scent for the warmer months - especially if you are a fan of berry/currant scents and Lush bath products. But to me, it's not a must-have to hunt down. If it really smelled like redcurrant and cream, it might have been.

lovely red currant

As Jo Malone fragrances go, this is a simple one. It is mostly red currant and musk. The cream is very faint in the drydown to counter the tart berry, but I am by no means disappointed. This is another refreshing favorite of mine. It was suggested to me that two good (separate) layering suggestions are with Red Roses or Nectarine Blossom and Honey to give the scent a little better longevity.

I will confess that I am partial to Christine Nagel's work, and she did a decent job with the Sugar & Spice collection.

edit: I will have to say that over a week later, most of the line was forgettable...which is disappointing since I did enjoy them when I tested them. I probably wouldn't recognize them if you gave me blind samples of the collection.

A Berry Dream in Purple

Jo Malone made dessert dreams come true in 2013. And I am definitely a dessert person. I love sweet things. I mean delicious and juicy berries with sweet cream. Who can say no to that? So it’s no surprise that I got all 5 fragrances from this edition.

I must admit, however, that I didn’t like Redcurrant & Cream very much at first. I can’t even say what it was. Something just didn’t fit. Now I find it simply wonderful. It just took a little time.

I try to eat as healthily as possible. And that’s how I discovered smoothies for myself. They are quick to make, healthy, and tasty. Among other things, I also tried a berry smoothie. With currants, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, and strawberries. Super delicious! And this berry smoothie tastes exactly like Redcurrant & Cream smells. Fascinating. And since then, I wear it regularly.

I can perceive strawberries, raspberries, and currants very well. Although the currants are a bit more prominent. The musk prevents it from becoming too sour and gives the fragrance a light and sweet creaminess.

The longevity is great at just over 6 hours. The sillage is also impressive. The scent wafts around me without being intrusive.

A little anecdote on the side. When I was sitting in our break room, my colleague came in and said, "It smells delicious like strawberry tea here." I could only grin. So I’ll take that as a compliment.

I really like it and find it very unfortunate that it was only a limited edition. I hope it stays with me for a long time.

By the way, my appetite for berry smoothies has greatly increased.

My Summer Dream

When I tested this fragrance and let others sniff it, no one but me was really convinced. Fruity, sweet, and fresh, but lacking depth, nothing special, they said.

For me, the scent is a dream, fresh, sweet-sour blackcurrants that smell endlessly, authentic and not synthetic-sickly sweet like fruity fragrances often are. The blackcurrant is clear and unmistakable, definitely dominating for me, then comes a bit of raspberry, while I can't detect any strawberry at all.
The "cream" in this case is not a thick layer of cream, it's a small, delicate dot that rounds off this fragrance, giving it a certain elegance and otherwise staying completely in the background. I feel like there's a tiny hint of vanilla as well, again hardly perceptible.

After spraying, the berries explode, it's like fresh juice, the soft notes are not noticeable yet. The scent quickly becomes very close to the skin, it sits on the skin, is well perceivable, but does not spread in the room.
After about 12 hours, the fragrance becomes creamy-soft, the berries are tamed and only faintly noticeable, but you can still sense a hint of fruity freshness. This base note is very long-lasting; if you smell directly on the skin, it lasts more than 2 days, even surviving a shower.

Those looking for authentic red currants with a touch of cream are in the right place; those expecting a surprise or a mysterious scent with depth will be disappointed.
