Boringly unpleasant
A really bland and sharp woody-violet fragrance mostly built on musky notes, synthetic cedar, something slightly fruity reminding me of blackcurrant, a subtle minty head accord and not much else. Nothing “black” for sure, the mood is rather bright and cold. Tons of other similar designers come to mind, but while most of them at least try to smell different, Black instead feels so lazily generic it almost smells like an archetype of woody-violet fragrances. The strong feel of harsh synthetic cheapness doesn’t really help – adding the “unpleasant” to the “boring” factor.

Posh In The Perfect British Style
Here it is, I received it today from Amazon, as a blind purchase based on notes, reviews and my passion for other Dunhills. The package is intact; the box has a modern yellow and white splash Union Jack style printed on a black background, much like London. I open it, a heavy bottle with a metal cap comes out, and to my surprise something is wrong: the juice inside has a nice green colour between cobalt and emerald. Yet I thought I saw a grey liquid in other photos and videos. The picture here on the site confirms my amazement. I smell the perfume; it is shocking, particular, unique, and above all good, it has no rotten or stale undertones. I check the bottom of the box better, and I discover that P&G Prestige Beauté produced this lot, the code 0821 is very recent—Production date 07-10-2020. So, the cologne is safe, and once again, Alfred Dunhill surprises me with this variation on the theme.

Where to start, I don’t understand rates so low in every respect. The bottle is linear, minimal, massive, with particular carvings on the bottom, and a beautiful heavy metal cap seals perfectly and does not come off when you lift the bottle. For me, it deserves at least an 8/10 or higher. And the same goes for the perfume; for me, it is innovative, disruptive and charming on the nose. Maybe it’s not unique, but still nothing boring or annoying. Dunhill Black belongs to the aromatic and leathery herbaceous family. On the skin, it opens with a tremendous explosion of an inky green accord, something mysterious that I’ve never gotten to feel before in other perfumes. These are the nettle leaves, healthy and quite pronounced, slightly mentholated and musky, which here take the entire initial phase. There is a hint of citrus in the mix, but the green note is dominant. The initial stage is all too vivid, green, with a touch of floral and dewy notes that come from the heart. Nettle is best, and it’s something you don’t come across every day.

The floral notes emerge clearer after half an hour. As the nettle leaf fades, a sweet but subdued blend of jasmine and lavender comes together to add remarkable depth to the heart. These flowers are smooth and smooth, hold more than background notes, while velour acts almost immediately, making it smell like a wild animal, but not horrible. The lavender note, which is not exaggerated or dominant like in other men’s fragrances, but relatively subdued, turns into a gentle, slightly dirty, almost animalic thing. As for the jasmine, I’m afraid I won’t get too much, maybe it’s its transparency that makes it so subtly.

As it relaxes at the bottom, the flowers give way to a gorgeous soft suede with some woody base notes of cedar and guaiac. I get the almost rubbery, woody essence, a little burnt, and immediately afterwards it softens until it turns into a velvety, suede nuance, which detaches considerably from its herbaceous opening. Strangely, I find nothing “black” in this perfume, apart from the very mysterious beginning and this leathery base, however delicate, like suede and not rough, like raw leather; maybe that’s where the name comes from. However, it’s more like a dark, inky green than a black. There is a musky sweetness underneath, though, which I think is because of the mix of suede combined with woody notes and jasmine. Things get a lot softer during dry weather, but it doesn’t last long enough in the end.

Dunhill Black is a pleasant variation of the typical aquatic fragrances, although this is not a purely aquatic fragrance; however nettle, lavender and velour make it darker than the typical marine ones, less cloying, but fresh! As a delicate scent, with a daytime vibe, I find it a wonderful choice for the office or casual occasion, especially outdoor evenings during the summer such as garden parties, birthdays, weddings, social events. Maybe I will go against the tide, but I find it perfect for the cool spring and especially autumn weather. The quality of the fragrance is not questionable, but you have to appreciate that acute note of green nettle that persists for almost the entire life cycle of the cologne, to best appreciate Dunhill Black.
This review bases upon a 100ml. (3.4 fl. oz.) I own since November 2020.

Uncommon scent
I got a sample of this fragrance because of its Nettle accord. I don´t like all those mainstream scents, that are fine in the best case, but lack originality, are boring and let you with that feeling of me-too.

So I give credit to Dunhill for this nice and different fragrance. Once said that, the scent itself is dominated by this nettle accord. It´s delicate and pleasant, nobody is going to dislike it. But it´s not something that makes you fall in love.

The aroma of nettle in this fragance is faint with an slightly sweet, very slightly salty, pleasant, herbaceous smell. It brings good vibes, but this may not be the scent someone looks for in a fragrance. That´s why I give it just a 6. It´s good and different, but it doesn´t drive me crazy.

Sillage is mild, definitely this fragrance is for self enjoyment. Longevity is low, as everybody else has said. Great bottle.

Nettle run over on hot asphalt
Dunhill London and Desire are high on my wish list and might be blind buys since they are rarely available for testing anywhere. Today, however, I received a different sample with my order, Dunhill Black. My first thought was an extraordinary top note. What is that? Similar to the rubber of Bulgari Black, very unusual and bold, but absolutely not pleasant or great for my taste, rather on the verge of terrible.

How can one even use nettle??? And then in the top note. All by itself. Courage is desired and good, but the experiment went horribly wrong. It smells like rubber, asphalt, night, nettle, green stuff... not a great mix, as if Dunhill either doesn't conduct quality control or has people with strange taste sitting there.

I really hope the two candidates from the company offer something better, otherwise they will be sold quickly again. Fortunately, this was just a sample, which casts a bad light on the luxury goods manufacturer from London.

Then slightly floral notes are added until a mini leather-cedar mixture is found in the finish after far too short a time. A pure waste of time this perfume and disappointment. In the beginning, there was even a very brief citrus note that was about as black as the sun and didn't fit at all. An incredibly inappropriate name and green color would have suited better.

The bottle is typically dull for Dunhill. The sillage is by no means as annoying as nettle fields, rather very tame. The longevity is at least 7 hours, but with the existing downsides, that doesn't matter anymore.

No, much more needs to come from Dunhill to convince me. One more slip-up and no perfume will be bought blind from you!

Black Nettle??...
Everyone tries to stay as far away from nettles as possible, and here you’re supposed to spray yourself with it. Sure, that's just a joke; it's not like you run around screaming because your neck area (or wherever else you spray) is burning.

The opening:
Is this nettle? Hmm, I don’t even know what this hellishly burning weed smells like when touched, and I definitely don’t want to rub my nose in it, but it smells green, grassy, and fresh, with an aura almost like mint and a slight resemblance to vetiver. This lingers for a few minutes until it becomes slightly sweet and floral, as the jasmine and lavender unfold. After less than 10 minutes, you can smell the first hints of leather and, as my predecessor wrote, something rubbery, certainly nothing really pleasant, but this soon disappears. At this point, it still smells green and floral, with all notes smelling equally intense and no single note really standing out. A little later, it only smells green and somewhat woody, the leather is almost gone, and other scents are hardly noticeable.

The sillage is fine, even above average; the floral and nettle notes are more pronounced than the leather. However, after about an hour, it becomes noticeably weaker. The longevity is about five or six hours.

The bottle is rectangular and stands on triangular feet, which doesn’t look too bad. The contents are filled in a coat-of-arms style and are actually typical of many other bottles, so nothing particularly special.

Dunhill Black (why black, anyway??) is meant for spring and summer and smells accordingly fresh. It also features delicate leather and floral notes. But everything doesn’t necessarily harmonize perfectly, making the scent one of many for me, and thus it shouldn’t be bought blindly. It’s not bad, but also not good, and therefore quite average.

I really want to like this fougère, but I cant and want it out of my collection.
There is this tannic sweetness to it.

The nettle note is more prominent in a humid environment. Even if the longevity and sillage are not the best, it's still a nice fragrance.
