A Warm Symphony of Sweetness, Waxiness, and Spiciness
Oh boy, Avant Guard has such a sensual and savory redolence, it reminds me of waffle cone smell with creamy vanilla, white sugar, whipped butter, a hint of coffee and wafer cookies blend. Of course, I know that almost none of these notes are mentioned, yet on my skin, it creates this sweet and yummy scent! It is a harmonious sweet, spicy, powdery, and woody fragrance, which I'd associate with YSL La Nuit de L'Homme, Burberry London for Men, and Mugler A*Men Pure Havane just to mention a few. Not closely akin to any of these ones, but it's damn good in its own right. A unique and overlooked gem.
If you like YSL La Nuit de l'Homme kind, then there is a huge chance that you will like this one, either. Though, the beeswax note is what sets this apart, which gives it a luscious, edible honey accent. The beeswax is natural, mellow, and rich, and it's what gives the juice its unique profile. This is probably the best beeswax fragrance on the market. What I get from this fragrance is a gorgeous beeswax, cardamon, benzoin and tobacco combo.
That said, I blind bought this one. At first, I was worried by the "sweet" description. Sweet scents often put me off, as I'm not a fan of the cloying tonka bombs or candied clubbing scents such as 1 Million original for instance. Luckily Avant Garde gets it right, confidently combining sweetness with maturity. It is an oriental woody fragrance, exploding with the warm spiciness of black and pink peppercorns, the freshness of bergamot, and the resinous juniper. Let the initial booziness of the alcohol vanishes, and then you will be caught by this formidable overture. The spices are well balanced and not pungent, so if you like fresh and spicy tones, this could be the fragrance you’ve been looking for.
Its dandyish heart notes beat wildly with an armful of lavender, sprinkled with fresh spices touches of sweet nutmeg and bitter cardamom, and then gathered together by beeswax to give the juice its honey inflection.
The dry down releases notes of vetiver that mixes its savage intensity with the enveloping warmth of benzoin, the ecstatic spirals of a tobacco accord and the woody amber facets of the avant-garde Georgywood. Tobacco is Avant Garde's featured note, rendered spicier by additions of pepper and cardamom, given a hint of freshness via lavender, and sweetness by resins, and woodiness by, well, woods. It's somewhat powdery, with gentle florals and spices behind the honeyed beeswax. I can definitely smell the benzoin giving it a smooth creaminess that could be mistaken for vanilla.
By using Georgywood, there’s an amber quality that compliments the fragrance’s top notes. It’s worth noting that the tobacco and Georgywood combine to give a strong and lasting touch that makes the cologne very long-lasting, by my count up to three hours.
It's reasonably safe enough of an offering for those who fancy sweet tobacco scents, as the powderiness of it is limited enough, not really quite in the YSL L'Homme or Dior Homme category, very much remaining somewhat of a darker sweet-spicy combo. Avant Guard is a pleasant choice for nights, but also working days when you have a meeting or if you are dealing with people, being it not offensive, particularly in cooler weather. It is a safe cologne that a man can’t go wrong with. Great for guys who like a masculine woody scent. It is very lasting and works great for the night out. The bottle is amazing and feels like a smooth and sensual black cobblestone! Think of this as a more vigorous La Nuit De Lhomme with an added sweetened tobacco note.
Smell it, my friends.
