Once APOM a Time

It’s difficult to believe that it’s been 15 years since the release of the extraordinary APOM Pour Homme. Sadly, this gem was later discontinued. APOM Pour Homme was very much a signature for me. I heard last year that APOM was being relaunched, but with some modifications. So you can imagine this was a much anticipated release for me. It was also announced that Homme and Femme would be one fragrance. I secretly hoped that it would lean more towards APOM Pour Homme.

Instead, Kurkdjian strategically selected one note from each composition (ylang ylang from femme and amber from homme) in order to create a gender neutral version. Newly added vanilla, white musk, labdanum and lavender absolute gives it an interesting twist.

The common note between the classics were orange blossom and cedar which are clearly present here. This variation is reminiscent of APOM Homme in the dry down, but introduced itself as APOM Femme; at least on my skin.

In essence, a floral opening but warm-ambery aromatic dry down. There is an unexpected aldehydic opening that caught me off guard, but it is somewhat short lived. If it existed throughout the duration of wear, I would have gone in another direction as I am not fond of aldehydes or anything in resemblance. While APOM 2024 is not what I had hoped for, it’s close enough for me.

I do understand why one might say this smells feminine when compared to APOM Pour Homme. APOM 2024 is a fusion of two different fragrances to form one solitary composition.

Sparkling gold

The re-release of APOM came as a surprise to me. I was under the impression that the legend of APOM would slowly fade away from this world, soo I was thrilled to find out this hero is back in the game. But a huge reputation comes with huge expectations. Hopefully the scent is as sparkling and golden as its visual appearance.

APOM has a unique way of combining refreshing and warmer notes. Both orange blossom and ylang-ylang together make up the core floral accord, which is instantly recognizable. The acidity from the orange blossom along with a cool cedar note make it refreshing enough for casual daytime wear. At the same time the huge floral accord boosted by some musk and perhaps a little amber is dramatic enough for a night out.

There is a clear resemblance to APOM Femme Eau de Parfum but there are some differences. The new edition emphasizes the orange blossom over the ylang, making it much fresher and more casual than APOM Femme. It seems Kurkdjian also aimed for a more contemporary character through the addition of some mineral notes and a toned down cedarwood. And while maintaining its overall classical profile, APOM does feel more modern compared to APOM Femme. Also, where the old version is way too dramatic and opulent to wear in the office, this newer one would do just fine.

Whether you are familiar with the older versions or not, APOM is definitely a perfume to look out for if you like a somewhat classical floral-woody. Its floral character is truly unique and its versatility has improved significantly. In my book Kurkdjian has finally scored some credits again, even though this APOM will never reach the 'unicorn' status of its predecessor.

A Part of Me

Never smelled the original APOM Homme so I cannot compare the two. However, I think this fragrance release is a little late. This should've been released in the spring. APOM opens with a very nice lavender and orange blossom. The orange blossom is very close to that in Vixere and a lavender reminiscent of Sartorial. I don't get much sweetness on my skin until the vanilla in the dry down. I also detect a little bit of powderiness which makes it even better. Very likeable. Very nice spring and summer staple. Leans more feminine but will be OK on guys in the spring.

Indeed-A Part of Me

I have never tried the old ones. Which makes me quite objective about commenting the scent. I saw advertisements focusing on "A Part of Me" sentence, which I agree quite. This scent is not an extraordinary new release, but quite the opposite it is/has been always around us. Very calming, somehow a little bit creamy, with white florals and amber it's seductive and warm as well. I really liked it very much in the store both on paper and on my skin. I was trying the new releases and after a few ones I turned back to MFK counter and bought it. It was very very fast decision for me !

In my opinion the sillage is not good as I expected, maybe my nose is getting used to it. But longetivity is quite ok ! I guess it's leaning to feminine side more..but it doesn't mean that men couldn't wear this. It's a part of me, smells with my skin chemistry.. and I liked it.

Ylang-ylang and lavender pairing is not my thing

Haven't smelled the other APOMs so I'm not here to compare them. I was curious to see how it would fare on myself since reviews seemed pretty positive accross the board.

Can't say the fragrance is bad, but it's also nothing very... special? I mean, it's a pretty bouquet of florals with some woody vanilla in the drydown, but overall it's more mainstream / mass-appealing (nothing wrong with that) and the price isn't very representative of that aspect. I'm not sure of the ylang-ylang and lavender pairing is good (at least to me). You've got a very tropical, carnal, usually heavy, note of yellow flower going against a more soothing, relaxing, herbal-y purple flower. Let's just say I'm not a fan of the pairing. Neroli also faded in the background when faced against these two flowers. White musk turns the scent powdery after a while and I get a faint vanilla sweetness paired with a woodiness.

The performance is absolutely abyssmal. Became a skin-scent after maybe 30 minutes? I still get some remnant if I bring my nose to my skin, but even then, I need to inhale quite deeply to even get a smidge of something. At the price it's at with the name associated to it... I was just expecting something more.
