The Erotic Appeal of Men's Toiletries
Marbert Man is one of those strange, overtly masculine fragrances that have always been around. It’s something you’ve smelled often without knowing what it actually was. I can’t remember it ever being advertised in the last 20 years. Nevertheless, it’s not just shyly tucked away in the corner of department store fragrance sections, but is offered in all varieties of grooming products. Who actually buys all this? And why?

This perfume is wonderfully hideous. A penetrating synthetic floral note, with a jasmine accord playing the lead role, sits atop a complex yet quite indefinable woody base. I notice a striking similarity to the well-known Kouros by Yves Saint Laurent. And when you compare the ingredient lists of both perfumes, the impression is confirmed.

The Marbert Man, released 4 years earlier, is even more unrefined and rough around the edges than its refined successor by Pierre Bourdon. Anyone who rejects Kouros must hate Marbert Man!

Unfortunately, the peculiar jasmine note of this fragrance is not only known from perfumes; it reminds me in a fatal way of scent compounds found in urine stones and the like. Marbert can’t be blamed for that, but I think you need a certain robustness to wear this scent. Normally, I would quickly label a perfume with this note as "cleaning product" and set it aside. However, Marbert Man is too interesting for that. In its rough-and-tumble way, sharp and far from any balance, it is quite likable to me.

But it gets worse. Please don’t continue reading if you’re already put off! With the slight retreat of the floral note - it doesn’t completely disappear - a sharpness and saltiness emerge that actually makes me think of fresh male sweat and urine.

Definitely a very physical scent, which some might find sexy. Extremely sparing use is absolutely necessary, as the intensity of this construction worker perfume is just as bombastic as that of Kouros.

A great fragrance! But wearing it myself? No way!!!

The Last Lude?
I am a big fan of budget fragrances as long as they promise an honest naturalness, and so it was somehow clear that this classic couldn't hide from me for long...
I have a mini as an aftershave in front of me, black lettering, vertical logo.

Unfortunately, and somewhat inexplicably, Marbert Man doesn't come off too well here, but just wait another 5 years until the last nose has been burned off by the synthetic stuff, then you will see that even the 24-hour gas station only carries synthetic deodorants. :o)

So, here we go, I unscrew the golden cap from the bottle and apply a small amount to the back of my hand.

It starts off loud, but not shamelessly, just for a short time lemon, soon an animalic note joins in, pleasantly slowing down the freshness.
It spreads wide and warm on the skin, it is also one of those fragrances that are allowed to change over time. The floral notes fade, making way for a somewhat leathery soap, but that never stops the lemon-floral beast from flashing back in every now and then.
The drydown is rounded, leathery, warm, soft, sexy.

No, I consider Marbert Man to be an underrated fragrance, even if it appears with gold chains around the neck in the golden 560 SEC, with a bouquet of flowers on the passenger seat, red leather of course.

And of course, kids have no business being out at this hour in the district. Not at all...

Night Meadows - Blues, Close to the Forest
Anyone expecting a "cheaply" made fragrance here has greatly underestimated the company Marbert. They create wonderful scents. This one is a prime example. The simple bottle conceals a liquid content that is truly remarkable.
After a brief citrus phase at the beginning, Marbert Man really gets going. Spiced flowers of the more robust kind, underpinned by "coniferous" notes, in this case cedar and juniper, it really picks up momentum. An evening, damp meadow atmosphere emerges. The forest is within scent and sight. All sorts of insects are still buzzing around before the night settles over the landscape.
You can hardly see anything, only recognize where you are based on the sounds.
Only the soft rustling of the nearby trees, which intensifies when the wind picks up, and a distant rumble announcing a thunderstorm.
After a brief, intense "shower," the scents of the surroundings become even more pronounced.
Mossy-earthy notes waft in from the forest, enveloping everything.
Did a owl just call? Night meadows blues.... Kiwik... Kiwik...
It is dark. And eerily cozy....

I've been alone with you inside my mind....
In 1987. My uncle used the fragrance. A green plastic bottle (!) with the aftershave from Marbert. It smelled much fresher than the cologne I tested. My uncle also owned the most beautiful Mercedes in the world. A turquoise (!) 560 SEC with white (!) leather seats and even AMG tuned! Much cooler than the stupid K.I.T. from Knight Rider. What a cool guy! What a cool scent. Marbert Man! So many beautiful memories come to me. And so the years went by.....

From time to time I bid on a few minis on eBay. And so a vintage Eau de Cologne bottle of Marbert Man landed with me. In joyful anticipation of a nice scent déjà vu, I immediately splashed a good amount on my wrist. I should have left that alone. There wasn’t much left of the cool “dude” from the 80s. Antiquated and audaciously trying to be a village macho. But somehow also sexy. Such perfumes simply don’t exist anymore. On the right guy, it would surely still charm many women today. Was it actually reformulated?

Well, then it happened; I work a lot with people and one evening I stood opposite two grandpa types who BOTH smelled strictly of Marbert Man and were as far from the sexy macho as Dieter Bohlen is from ethics and morals. So that’s the clientele. Oh Marbert, your wearers are dying out.

I wonder what my uncle is doing? I haven’t seen him in surely ten or eleven years.

Has Shaped Generations of Men!
I actually thought I had tested all men's perfumes except for new releases in my regular perfumery. But hiding down in the bottom right was Marbert Man. Did the scent scare me until now, or was its bottle just too ugly and inconspicuous? Probably a mix of both, as it seems to be a classic that has been around for almost 40 years. It stands almost everywhere right next to Tabac, Kouros, 4711, etc., and appeals to the same clientele. An old-fashioned men's scent for lumberjacks, department heads just before retirement, and the ultimate macho. A fragrance that everyone knows because there are so many in this direction. And buyers who wear and love it loyally throughout their lives. Perfume fans or connoisseurs are clearly not these now older gentlemen, but at least they are loyal and better than being unscented. Although some do go a bit overboard with this type of aftershave scents and douse themselves.

I smell flowers, and yet the scent is masculine like rarely anything else... spicy flowers on spicy citrus on spicy wood. And with so much spice, the scent is simply thoroughly masculine. And just extremely old-fashioned and 70s. Basil meets lemon was just extremely trendy back then. These floral notes make the scent even thicker, sweatier, and more body-like. A worker's scent - as if men doing heavy physical labor drip some lemon water on their sweaty bodies and then go eat something spicy in a restaurant. Not appetizing but somehow so old school and simple that it’s almost cute.

Bottle: number 1... from the bottom.
Sillage: Strong, masculine, but in the current version I believe it is somewhat mutilated and not exaggerated anymore. Still, it's not a scent you need to spray 10 times, dear grandfathers/fathers!
Longevity: lasts almost all day, a good 7-9 hours!

I can't recommend the scent - but I do have respect for it and its wearers. Because it takes courage and loyalty to still wear it today.
It has, so to speak, merged with its customer base :)

Aldehydic-soapy, green and floral, robust leathery, musky-animalic: very masculine, yet also alluring. Marbert's typical rough charm.

Old coot, still quite green behind the ears. It holds flowers, animals, and earth within it, as well as spices. Awesome!

A fine citrus opening that smoothly transitions into a spicy heart note. A lovely, slightly animalistic base. A champion in its class!

Once in the pub, he sat at the next table. He was in the bathroom before you. He took the elevator before you. Soapy fingers hold a Marlboro…

A leathery, somewhat animalistic classic that has always been. But for me, it's a bit too old-school.

"Wow, how long have you been around?" Quite a while... and that's a good thing. Maybe not suitable for my age group, but so pleasant...

It's just about okay before it goes out of fashion. The base hardly competes against the dominant barbershop. Ambivalent.

Vintage Test: Very old school, quite leathery and musky. Longevity is good, sillage is average. Unfortunately, not for me.
