Stoutly Brewed China Black Tea--or is it leather?--with Cream
Tokyomilk Dark BULLETPROOF is a surprisingly good perfume. The surprise arises primarily from the low cost of this line, with 2 ounces commanding all of $40. Sounds impossible, I know, but Margot Elena is the master of what I have come to refer to affectionately as "budget niche" perfume.

Why niche? Well, because the creations smell natural and feature unique combinations of notes not found anywhere else. What more could one want?

BULLETPROOF offers a dark, even black, China tea note which smells rather leathery to my nose, no doubt in part because of the ebony in the mix. Some reviewers have compared the scent to rubber tires, but I find this quite a bit less intense than either Molinard HABANITA or Bvlgari BLACK, my two reference rubber tire scents. BULLETPROOF also does not give me a headache.

The sillage is pretty big and the longevity excellent, and overall this smells quite good, all things considered. Most of the Tokyomilk creations are fairly linear and sometimes I find them a bit flat. They definitely lack the "radiance" of many haute niche perfumes being offered today. The good news is that they also tend not to be overloaded with the usual aromachemical suspects which have been homogenizing niche perfumery. Margot seems to compose to the beat of her own drummer.

I recommend BULLETPROOF to anyone who likes dark tea and leathery perfumes. I recommend the entire line to anyone who looks to perfume as a substitute for world travel, as each and every one of the perfumes from this house occupies a distinct node on the grand olfactory map.

The bottles are small (the dark series are 2 ounce and the regular series 1 ounce), so they are fun to explore and do not require a big investment to do so. These are probably not perfumes which I would buy twice, but the experience of wearing them for the duration of one bottle is certainly worth much more than the modest asking price!

The Best Tea In Town
Smoked tea leaves and a partnership of dense, dark ebony and Virginia cedar creates an exotic blend that causes interruption, hesitation and sensation. Although the coconut milk note is not detectable, it plays the peacemaker or for lack of a more suitable word, "smooth". It gives the composition balance, never allowing sharp cedar and dark woods to overtake the fragrance. There are myths that ebony wood was used to ward off evil spirits and demons. Perhaps such a fine scent also has spiritual benefits.

one for the history books
nothing, I REPEAT NOTHING smells like bulletproof. its magical heady waves of ebony wood, coconut and tea leaves will literally make people spin around and take notice. you WILL be asked "WTF are you wearing??? it smells UHHHHmazing!!" trust. go find this ASAP and prepare to have your mind (nose?) blown. just remember a spritz or two will do... its silage is wicked overpowering and bulletproof will trail you for miles if you overdo it.

For the fearless
TokyoMilk... how I envy those who are able to buy this brand, or any of Margot Elena's brands, in-store or online. They're not available here in Europe and I doubt they ever will be. When I found myself in San Francisco I managed to find a cute stationery store in Japantown where they sold a small collection and knew I needed to sample them all.

Bulletproof was the standout. I know absolutely nothing that smells like this: Smoky tea in a way that reminds me of a cozy oversized leather jacket yes, but softened by the coconut milk, grounded by the cedar and woods. I'm reminded of a motorbike ride through Schwarzwald when I catch a whiff of this. It's much stronger than most of her other offerings (I have only few to compare them to, but let's say Tainted Love and Everything & Nothing) and lasts for a long time on skin.

If you come across this and like unusual scents, I highly recommend you give it a try.

The Beauty of Chance…
"And I can lie about last night
The breathing and the noise
I take myself to places that men do not understand
All the people standing defenseless
Just like me just like us
Just like me just like us

All the noise and dirt and dust
All that we swore to keep
I swear I will hold on
And I took my time
To spell out zenith

The beauty of chance
That we love our lives no matter how late it is
This is not the sun going down
But the earth turning“
(Tomte)

At this point, a big thank you to Fluxit for the tireless organization and provision of travel packages, and thus the beauty of chance to test rare fragrances!
All the scents from the Tokyomilk Dark line were interesting to sniff and are characterized by a unique signature, niche as I like it - untraveled paths and exciting combinations of fragrance materials. I do not like all the results by any means, but I enjoyed testing them, and Bulletproof was my favorite.
The fragrance notes are not stacked according to a pyramid here, and I perceive the impression that way - it is fully present right after spraying and changes little over time. A fine melange of strong, slightly smoky black tea with milk; very fine, soft, well-worn favorite leather, and tobacco flavored with honey and vanilla. The classification is clearly unisex for me, if you like it delicate, flattering, sweet-smoky, and finely woven. In the background, there is a slight note of motor oil, tire rubber, or some kind of lubricant that fits well into the overall impression and prevents the scent from becoming too smooth and shallow.
I feel reminded of Armani Cuir Noir, Midnight in Paris, or Bvlgari Black by the overall impression. I do not perceive coconut milk at all, but rather vanilla smoke and fine leather. Regarding coconut milk, I am pleased that the expectations are not met here.
The name behaves similarly - as with almost all scents from the Black line, the association that the name evokes does not correspond to the olfactory experience that follows. With Bulletproof, I would have thought of a bulletproof vest, a heavy, bulky thing - but the impression is milky-soft and almost creamy, sweet and a bit bitter.
I like that; with this softness, it is certainly easier to go through life than with a bulletproof vest that significantly restricts flexibility and freedom of movement - and yet, with Bulletproof, you carry a kind of bullet around you, like when you wear your favorite leather jacket that still has a bit of the scent of your favorite person on it.
To return to the opening text - we all stand defenseless against life, and no bulletproof vest can help with that, yet the beauty of chance is always with us. I am grateful for the many beautiful experiences and nice people here and look forward to another year with you fragrance enthusiasts!

Strong, smoky black tea sweetened with milk and honey. Enjoyed in a leather armchair, clothes still oily from the engine repair. It has something!

That's how my jackets used to smell when I picked them up from the cloakroom in the smoky disco. Smoky, bitter, leathery, trace of the evening scent.

Leather-woody sillage creates a bulletproof aura. Bulletproof is a stark, clear, pleasantly wearable scent in the style of a neo-classic.
