Lucrezia Borgia — a name spoken in whispers; a synonym for beauty, power, and danger.
I immediately think of Holliday Grainger in the role of Lucrezia herself: her angelic face, golden curls, and the icy calm in her gaze- she is actually a perfect Lucrezia (as a perfume) for me. Her beauty was first worshipped and then made as a tool of survival and dominance in a brutal world ruled by men.

It is worth remembering that the Italian house V Canto, immersed in Dante’s dark aesthetics and medieval passions, does not create “mood perfumes,” but rather true olfactory studies of historical characters. That is why these creations should be judged only with an understanding of their narrative - and in that sense, they are truly masterful (especially for nerds like me). Comparisons to Black Opium do appear in reviews, but for me this is a far more sophisticated and accomplished story.

This is the story of a woman remembered not as a ruler, but as a threat. And so, yes - the fragrance weaves together unbearably sweet notes meant to convey her almost unreal beauty with bitter cocoa and pepper, meant to express the transformations of her character shaped by life among men. It is a perfumed interpretation of feminine power as seen by her enemies: eroticized, menacing, and wrapped in legends of poison and passion. And if you are looking for conventional elegance here, you will not find it - because that is not the point of this scent.

I will repeat it: masterful.

The Nobler Sister of Black Opium
As a big fan of YSL Black Opium and having owned several flankers of it, I was on the lookout for something similar but a bit more refined for a long time. Luxury perfumes don't develop as beautifully and tend to get stuck on one note, so I went searching.

That's how I stumbled upon V Canto Lucrethia. Just the bottle captivated me with its golden cap and luxurious red velvet. When I tested the perfume for the first time, I was surprised at how different it was from Black Opium. It goes hand in hand in one direction, but is much more elegant and complex.

The scent opens with a note of sugarcane that isn't actually present, like a heavily sweetened cold brew in summer, but it doesn't taste too sweet. The sweetness of the pear is quite noticeable, and you can sense the coffee, which only comes out stronger later. Over time, the notorious bay leaf joins in. I was afraid of this note because it immediately makes me think of soup, but fortunately, it doesn't disturb and rounds everything off nicely. After a while, the true magic begins. Here, this fragrance particularly differs from Black Opium. It evolves, and depending on the weather, different scent notes greet you more or less.

However, the base note remains the same, a warm, cozy vanilla dream with benzoin, and the coffee is like a forgotten stain on a blouse, reminding you that you treated yourself to a cold brew at lunch.

All in all, you can't expect much from this perfume; Paolo Terenzi is known for reinterpreting the scents of others. But the way he has reinterpreted the original pleases me very much.

Whenever I feel like being a classy city girl again, I always return to this fragrance.

My New Diet Assistant
The Lucrethia arrived as a sample for me; I had wanted to try a V Canto fragrance for a long time because I am fascinated by the whole story behind it. When I sniffed the test vial, I already sensed that this would not work out between us.
I dared a single, cautious spray on my wrist and thought to myself, I can always reapply.
At first, I was greeted by a strong scent of sweat, paired with heavy flowers. My stomach turned, and I had to pull myself together to avoid gagging. I avoided smelling it again and waited for the opening to fade.
After about 15 minutes, the fragrance became somewhat more bearable, and a faint vanilla emerged; the sweaty flowers took on a nauseating accord, and I felt initial headaches.
A look at the pyramid revealed to me where this sour sweat sensation came from: linden blossoms…
Yes, I can confirm that; I love linden blossom tea, and if my tea were a scent, it would surely smell like this.
The fragrance continued to unfold, and I can understand everyone who has found Black Opium Eau de Parfum here again, because indeed, the V. Canto becomes increasingly similar to the famous YSL over time. But the linden blossom remains true and gives the fragrance its unique, nuanced character.
I assume that the benzoin is responsible for my headaches.
I think there will be no true love between Lucrethia and me, but one thing is for sure: after this testing, the delicious, crunchy bag of chips next to the sofa remained unopened, and the evening television was watched without snacks.
If it helps with weight loss, then I have fallen for Lucrethia; I will definitely give us both another chance.
The fragrance is worth testing for absolute fragrance lovers, but I strongly advise against a blind buy.
Or perhaps if you have a diet coming up, it’s worth a try.
Thank you for reading my review; I hope I could bring you a little closer to this extraordinary scent.
Best regards

Tender as a Camel
... as icy as the moon,
innocent as the black devil,
who resides in hell.
So spirited as the snail
and stubborn as a beast,
so conceited as a movie star,
so ….. you are - never!!

A truly elegant, fine pear is revealed by Lucrethia. Unfortunately, unfortunately not for long, as jasmine and honeysuckle envelop it like a thick scarf. Petitgrain is slightly bitter, and the somewhat prominent jasmine is kept in check by pepper and a pinch of spices, also a bit sour-fresh. An ascending creaminess, a hint of oriental touch makes itself known. It becomes soft and sweet through vanilla and delicious, dry cocoa. Chocolate that is not wrapped in foil, but tied with a hint of cedarwood. And although one might think it would now become heavy or too sweet, the pear and the flowers remain always noticeable. It is like a touch of something fluffy soft, clear and gentle, somewhat powdery and bright. Not a heavy bomber, as the notes might suggest, but a wonderfully radiant fragrance that shines in various facets, which can be worn at any time. It does not clash or "burden," but is simply a lovely companion for day or evening.
However, the name Lucrethia is somewhat off when referring to a Roman lady who endured a rape to avoid shame being brought upon her.
Pear Helene would be more fitting ;-)

Did Lucrethia enjoy eating pears? They were cooked with vanilla pods and served under a linden tree with coffee. La dolce Vita.

Smells like a sweetly spiced dessert with a synthetic pear and a bright jasmine note, which really elevates the gourmand.

Fruity-sweet scent with a vanilla-pear note, subtle-light coffee note & creamy linden blossom note! It works almost all the time, I like it.

Incredibly realistic pear notes open the fragrance, layered with spicy-sweet undertones, and in the base, it's balsamically warm & soft.
