Childhood Memories
I wasn't going to write a review for this fragrance, but this is such a memorable fragrance from my childhood, I just couldn't resist.

To start, this thing opens with the signature Xerjoff citrus opening that almost every Xerjoff collector can never mistake. It's a really sweet dense citrus opening also. Almost like it was turned up a notch. I never get tired of smelling a Xerjoff opening.

Then when you get to the first part of the drydown, this is where my memory goes "wow" I remember that lol!! As a kid I grew up in the deep south of America. One of the things you learn in growing up in a southern rural community, is how to plant a garden full of fresh produce. Bell peppers, cucumbers, okra, tomatoes and FRESH SNAP PEAS. Some of you might chastise me for this memory, but I swear this first part of the drydown has almost fresh snap peas smell. That is the green note that I smell. No doubt, a lot of people will not like this note, but I love it. Such a cool memory to smell in a fragrance. I never would have thought of it.

After that initial part of the drydown comes where the fragrance absolutely comes alive. This is where the sweet amber, incense, labdanum, coffee and rose all balance this fragrance and kicks it into high gear with that green note lasting throughout the life of the fragrance. I can't smell the oud in here. It might just be my nose, but I just really can't detect it much.

If you want a fragrance that will take you on an actual journey from start to finish, this is the one. I am blown away with the way this thing brought back a childhood memory that was so "everyday" as a child, but now with me at 51 years old, I truly miss. Thank you Xerjoff for making a truely remarkable fragrance

Citrus, coffee and incense with some strong green notes.
Golden Moka is one of three perfumes from Xerjoff that are based on coffee accords. From what I know, one of these three probably all you need as a full bottle. Golden Moka is quintessential Xerjoff with its intensity and wide array of strong notes. This review was written originally for an authentic sample from Xerjoff. I have recently purchased a full bottle and review updated accordingly. I cannot find the nose behind this perfume.

The notes listed on Xerjoff’s website are mandarin, lemon, blood orange, rose absolute, incense, coffee absolute, Cambodian oud, amber, green accord and labdanum. The opening is a lovely citrus, with lemon as the major ingredient. Within minutes, the dusky heart notes start appearing. The beauty of Golden Moka comes from the combination of citrus notes and the darker notes like coffee, incense and amber. Together with a darker rose note, this blend evokes many different accords fleetingly. My nose thinks it smells a pineapple-like fruity accord and cardamom though these are not listed, nor are they a sustained presence. As Golden Moka ages on my skin, it becomes essentially a lovely, resinous coffee. The base notes I smell on my skin are a nice but mild blend of coffee, labdanum and incense. On my clothes I get mostly labdanum. If there is any oud in it, it is used in very tiny doses to color the coffee accord. There is a clear green accord in Golden Moka, which is often listed as green coffee or green cardamom in in other similar perfumes. The overall personality of Golden Moka evokes the coffee trade across the Mediterranean, perhaps a ship that carries incense and fruits also in its hold.

The performance of Golden Moka is very good on my skin. The main accords last for 6-8 hours, but the projection is subdued after the first few hours. But its longevity is slightly lower than that of Kilian Intoxicated, a perfume with which I compare it. Golden Moka stands out in a neutral environment, so it may not work well as an office perfume in a conservative setting.

If you have Kilian Intoxicated, be aware that it shares some accords with Golden Moka though without the opening citrus burst. I had some trepidations before buying a full bottle of Golden Moka because of the potential overlap with Intoxicated. Now that I have a full bottle, I think these are different enough to own both. Intoxicated feels more linear with green cardamom and coffee, while Golden Moka is embellished by citrus, incense and woody notes. As is customary of Xerjoff perfumes, the cost varies significantly across countries and across stores. I bought a 50 ml bottle for about $120 at a US discounter. Golden Moka is acceptable at that price point.

Green Coffee with Citrus
The word moka made me believe that this might be a coffee forward fragrance, but it wasn't exactly that. Well, it has coffee, but green, unprocessed coffee, not the beans you would buy for your morning brew. The different stages in Golden Moka are truly different from one other, almost like there's a clear border separating them. The opening is dominated by a bitter, juicy masculine red blood orange. Then the green coffee comes on stage, shooing away the citrus. At this point, the perfume starts to lose its sunny appearance and turns darker, more masculine.
In the base, a beautiful, discrete incense lays over everything. It reminds me a bit of Ray-Flection from Masque Milano, although without its beeswax sweetness. I like it for my guy in summer.

Great sweet, citric, oud/rose/resinous blend with raw coffee
Xerjoff Golden Moka is the second entry I’m trying from the Coffee Break collection released in 2018 (after Golden Dallah), and like Golden Dallah, there is the vague hint of raw unroasted coffee and some roasted coffee. I was assisted in understanding that the cannabis-like aspect of Golden Dallah was actually the fresh coffee rather than black / roasted coffee.

Golden Moka is noticeably fresher and brighter, a mix of citruses, raw coffee, oud, rose, and resins, still having some of the same funky cannabis-type feel as Dallah but in a fresher blend, certainly yielding a less idiosyncratic and more versatile offering while still having a lot of character. I think it’s an impressive feat to use the raw coffee accord in this way to yield a multifaceted, borderline tropical fruity mix that is provocative in various ways (with rose and oud in the mix) but settles in a reasonably well-blended fresh, sweet, resinous, yet still sort of funky coffee mix. Like Dallah, I love Moka—it’s a great fragrance and slightly easier to wear than Dallah, even if Dallah edges it out on account of richness and daringness.

Golden Moka appears to only be available in the US via Luckyscent and then the Xerjoff Universe website, for $275 and €235, respectively, so priced slightly higher than Golden Dallah, peculiar since Dallah seems to be denser / higher-performing than Moka, but it could be a matter of ingredients and I’m currently unsure if Moka was released later than Dallah in 2018 (Green followed in 2020).

Orange trip
Wow, this one has a really natural and sharp citruses! Such a shame that an orange dominates the fragrance completely. I barely detect any other notes. It’s lovely anyway but I was looking for more coffee and incense. On my skin it stays for 3-4 hours, which is a little bit too short for that expensive scent.

Initially fresh and juicy citric-fruity, this Spring fragrance slowly settles to a very soft and warm earthy-woody base. Sadly lacks depth.

Sweet-citrusy (lemon & orange) amber open, built on a prominent warm spiciness from the incense & labdanum. The citruses do fade away.

Bright citrus with a sweet warmth which remains present all throughout the fragrance. It’s nice.

Nothing special, blood orange + amber base, closer to a PdM than a Xerjoff, the price is a nonsense, huge skip.

Citrusy freshness amidst green nature. Warm cardamom accompanied by delicate rose, enveloped in incense. No coffee + little oud. Nice.

It smells like citrus powder, like lemon meringue. Spices and coffee create a sweetly bitter and delicate bouquet. Oriental.

Coffee break without coffee. Instead, there's a woody-floral-fresh potpourri with incense and even slightly green notes.

Blood orange star extends a hand to Rose (the secret star). Coffee and flattering Oud appear equally, yet subtly.
