I wonder...

Mamluk is exactly the type of scent that will make people in social events look at you with desbelief, all raised eyebrows and such, trying to decipher whether you haven't bathed for two weeks, covering your stench by spraying huge amounts of Angel in the meantime, or you are simply wearing some outrageously priced, high-end niche perfume. And just out of political correctness, or maybe fear of embarassing themselves, they'll never dare to ask for an answer, allowing you to deliberately suffocate people in your wake, and get away with it.

Beautifully sweet fragrance...

How nice this one is! A sweet, old fashioned, decadent kind of borderline gourmand. Mamluk is a fragrance that is my kind of style.

If you have tried vintage Guerlain - Shalimar, or Serge Lutens - Muscs Koublaï Khän, you will appreciate this one I think.

So to my nose it's all about oud, honey, caramel and jasmine. It's a sweet one, but not overbearingly so. It has a "dirtiness" that comes I think from the oud mixed with honey and indolic jasmine. I've encountered this kind of jasmine before. It can have an almost "fecal" note to it which I think may disturb some people. Personally I don't think it crosses over into "gross" territory. I thin the notes are blended exceptionally well. Almost like a honeyed, caramelised oud and a hit of over ripe jasmine garlands. Personally, I like it. I like some "dirtiness" in my fragrances. Needless to say, with the price on this one, you MUST try before you buy it.

Side note about the name: The name, Mamluk (?????) is an Arabic word meaning "owned". It refers to the slave warriors who ruled parts of the middle east and who spent their lives in service of a lord or ruler, as personal bodyguards. Very much like the Samurai of Japan. They were highly trained warriors who had great status and privilege in society. So this fragrance has the equivalent of the name "Samurai" in the Middle East. An interesting connection, but whether they smelled like this is anyone's guess!

Maybe a matter of skin chemistry

I've heard a lot about this scent and it seems to be very divisive. Some say it's stinky and animal, others say it's a beautiful honey fragrance. I personally belong to the latter group of people.
However, I can imagine why people could perceive the fragrance differently.

Let's first talk about why I really enjoy the scent. On my skin the scent is very strong on the notes of honey, vanilla and light floral touches. It acts like a typical gourmand fragrance. I can barely detect any oud in the fragrance and also the jasmine, which seems to be much more prominent on other peoples skin, is somehow toned down on my skin. I don't get any fruitiness, rather a certain softness, but the fragrance that comes closest to this fragrance on my skin is Back to Black by Kilian Paris. They are not redundant and also not copying each other. They just smell similar on my skin (not on paper).

Now that I've talked about the scent on my skin, please be aware that it might be different on yours. And that's exactly the point why I think that people either love or hate the fragrance. If the oud and the jasmine are both more pronounced on your skin, I can imagine people finding this one more stinky and animalic, because both notes can have those characteristics. You should definitely try the fragrances on your skin before buying.

Talking about performance, it exactly performs like you would expect from an oriental fragrance with gourmand and woody notes. I can smell the cloud around me for several hours and it practically stays on my skin from morning to late afternoon.

Oh god.

After trying and absolutely adoring 40 knots, Naxos and Ivory Route, I didn´t think Xerjoff could do any wrong. THIS here though, this does it for me. I do get the natural honey smell very strongly, but sometimes natural honey from the pot smells a bit like pee too. This smells like pee on my skin.

After dry down I must admit it gets a bit more OK. That´s when the florals and ambers come through for me. Still a screaming backing of honey.

It might work on you though.

Smells bad, like really bad.

All I get from this is the scent you smell when you pass someone who is genuinely homeless. This is offensive. It is horrid. In it's opening, it smells of a smell way past what would be considered BO. This is very very dirty bodies. Maybe this is some animallic element that I can't quite place. In this, it shares a quality I also pick up in Orchid Prairie from Rasasi. I am sat here with my nose pressed against my skin waiting for something to change, for a development, for the homeless person on my wrist to take advantage of my bathroom sink. Nothing changes.

It's still a dirty (I cannot emphasise enough how dirty this scent is), sweet (via the honey and vanilla) scent. It isn't linear, it's just moves through different phases of dirtiness. Dirty men smeared in honey is different enough from dirty men who have dipped in honey and is wearing a small jasmine flower in his lapel (probably hoping the smell of the jasmine will compensate for his unwashed body), which again is different from the smell of dirty men with vanilla pods stashed behind both ears. I'm surprised no one has drawn the similarities to Orchid Prairie. Anyway, avoid if you can. If you really like this you obviously have a more acquired palate than I, but please avoid me.

Edited to add: If you have ever been horse riding/spent time around horses, this scent took me right back to hanging out in stables as a teen.
