On second thought, not that great
This review, originally posted on in mid-April 2025 when the fragrance first came out, was subsequently edited in early December 2025 as a part of me revisiting the top 20 products of 2025 to nail down the exact order. The original review title "Solid start to Xerjoff's 2025 calendar year" was changed to "On second thought, not that great".

---

While Xerjoff did have a couple good products in 2024 with scents like "Deified Tony Iommi | XerJoff" and "Alexandria II Anniversary | XerJoff", the brand's continued path of market saturation also led them to drop numerous duds with "Newcleus | XerJoff" being the worst. Coming off the highs that Xerjoff reached with their previous collaborations with Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi, the iron already started to cool off as Deified was unable to match the highs of "Tony Iommi Monkey Special | XerJoff". Now, Xerjoff is taking another shot, this time by launching 2 collaborative scents with the English pop/rock band Duran Duran. But can these products meet Monkey Special's moment?

Upon first wear & initial impressions, NeoRio opens fruity and sweet-spicy. The fruitiness feels quite non-descript, but having later smelled Xerjoff's Milano exclusive Via Manzoni 20, I would say that it's cherry. That cherry is done in a very particular sugary-sweet style alongside the sweet-spicy structure, smelling a bit of incense and mild-to-moderate tobacco. This initial feel had me thinking the scent was inspired by products like Smoking Hot and Tobacolor. That is to say it felt like a fruity tobacco fragrance.

When you smell "NeoRio | XerJoff" up-close, the spiciness is obviously more intense. Xerjoff has recently utilized this type of spiciness in the base of several of their fragrances, incl. "Louis XV 1722 | XerJoff" and even "Groove Xcape | XerJoff". I get moderate incense and touches of the exotic spices that have also featured in scents like Golden Dallah. There's no fruitiness or tobacco listed, but the implied feel that you get on-skin is somewhere between cherry tobacco scents, patchouli-driven tobaccos and fruity tobaccos, i.e. a cross-section of prodcuts like Manhattan Eau de Parfum, Boundless and Smoking Hot.

I find the dry-down a bit too plain, meaning the depth that NeoRio features in the top is not a core part of the scent's final dry-down with the aromatic tones in the base again having some Golden Dallah and perhaps even the incense/elemi from Golden Moka. The scent primarily smells spicy-resinous-sweet in the final phases. The marketing here has me lost, because Xerjoff launched this in 4 different "happy colors", yet the final product is clearly meant to be a fall-winter scent (masculine lean). The brand's marketing in Milan at Esxence also has me lost, because you were not able to smell either of these 2 products at the event, yet once the product subsequently launched, Xerjoff started giving out bottles like they're free candy. In Milan, they also implied that this would be a Harrods exclusive, yet this fragrance was purchasable all across Europe after launch and now in early December, I see it on clearance at some boutiques for 50% off. Lastly, the price at €315/50ml feels very harsh - when "Tony Iommi Monkey Special | XerJoff" launched in 2021, the scent went for €235/50ml. That is to say the value is below average.

Ultimately, it has its positives and negatives. The scent's primary positive is the opening which I'd argue is the only selling point that it has. The product itself isn't flawlessly executed in its blending, esp. in the final dry-down (aromatic tones). For the profile, I find the performance fairly underwhelming: having worn it both indoors and outdoors, I'd say sillage is below average (peaks at arm's length) and longevity slightly above it (est. 7-8 hours). Additionally, I find NeoRio underwhelming in its originality as somebody who already owns several of the comps listed in this review and I'd say the highlights of the scent fade into a fairly plain spicy base within an hour. Given the competitors I listed all retail for nearly the same price in quantities between 100 and 125ml instead of NeoRio's 50ml, there's no objective way to make a recommendation here either. Prior to the revisions, NeoRio was 12th in my annual list and the revision moved it down a few spots. I'm looking at a retail bottle for 50% off as I'm revising this review and I believe it's still going to be a pass.

Maple syrup and fall spices
I'm really surprised no one has drawn the parallels yet between NeoRio and Oud Zarian. The opening is very very similar, with that "fall themed candle" kind of vibe. Considering the bottles and the "caramelized fig" note, I was expecting something fruity and candy-like, but this is not the case at all. Lots of spices which aren't listed in the note pyramid: cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and even licorice/anise which makes the comparison to Oud Zarian and Opus XIV - Royal Tobacco even more obvious. And a huge maple syrup note that dominates the fragrance after the opening. There is a subtle fruity rum note as well, which adds a smooth booziness to the concoction. The drydown is where it gets very different from the fragrances I'm comparing it to, it's a dry tonka-patchouli rather than the thick resinous myrrh of Oud Zarian.

I don't understand the low rating. Maybe because, like Groove Xcape, people were expecting a different fragrance based on the bottle? There's definitely nothing "wrong" with it to warrant a rating under 7 (6.6 at the time of writing this review). If you enjoy fall scents, and especially maple syrup, definitely give NeoRio a try. At retail it is definitely overpriced, but I'm seeing it at discounters for just above $150, and it's not a bad deal at that price. Especially compared to Oud Zarian. Low-ish rating for the bottle not because it looks bad, but because it misrepresents the scent.

A Warm Whisper, Not a Shout
Sometimes I pick up a book that seems to have everything: a catchy blurb, a beautiful cover, and... it just doesn’t stay with me. Not because it was bad. Just because it wasn’t mine. That’s exactly what NeoRio by Xerjoff feels like.
The opening is warm, slightly sweet, with a soft, spicy edge. There’s elemi for a resinous spark and rum that tries to set the scene — all dusted with candied fig. It sounds sensual, and it is, in a polite kind of way. But somehow, that special magic — the thing that makes a scent unforgettable — didn’t quite appear.
The heart brings in rose, saffron, and maple syrup. It reads like a golden autumn scene in a quiet French film — syrupy, soft, and almost languid. This is the part that fits the “nice, but nothing special” vibe the most. It doesn’t offend, it doesn’t shout — it just floats, quietly.
Then the base arrives: Peru balsam, tonka bean, and patchouli. Comforting, smooth, and familiar — like a cozy blanket and a book on a grey November day. It doesn’t surprise me, but it feels good. And sometimes, that’s enough.
NeoRio isn’t a masterpiece that turned my world upside down. But I’m not disappointed, either. It’s like a well-written slice-of-life novel — maybe not one for the favorites shelf, but still a pleasant read.

Incredible Feelings
“Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand
Just like that river twisting through a dusty land
And when she shines
she really shows you all she can”
Rio - Duran Duran -
Like a song that sweeps you away with its melodies and lyrics, NeoRio has done the same for me.
It was a fragrance I smelled, I confess, out of sheer curiosity.
Just like when you turn on the radio and suddenly stumble upon that one song that inexplicably captivates you, stirring emotions even though it’s your first time you hear it, even when the words aren't fully grasped.
With this fragrance, I can feel enchanting sensations, a playful dance of notes that triggered a wave of feelings within me.
Its creaminess, through the essence of a ripe and caramelized fig, sweetened with drops of maple syrup and resins, is deceptively gourmand thanks to the balm of Peru, with its illusion of vanilla. It enveloped me, making me feel genuinely good.
It has found a place on my wishlist, as I truly enjoyed it. Always good, with incredible performance.

Sometimes I WONDER...
Hello everyone,

I would like to say something about the new "NeoRio | XerJoff".

I want to start with the positive - the bottle, the cap, the craftsmanship, all of it is, as usual, at a very good level. The fact that some other colors are different is just visually cool (a nice idea) and the offered colors are very vibrant.

The sillage/performance is, in my opinion, good to good+, although this isn't too difficult for such a fragrance direction.

Ultimately, that was about it for the positive...

Personal opinion!

Xerjoff is a house that has released incredibly beautiful, creative, high-quality fragrances in the past, as well as those that have helped the company reach a new level purely in terms of sales.... - I'm digressing.

When I see what this company releases year after year nowadays..., it’s somehow creepy and very bizarre at the same time.

About the scent:

Sweet, spicy, resinous, sticky... perceiving certain fragrance notes exactly is relatively difficult. The whole time I have associations with some weird sticky licorice Haribos.... - no, really not nice (my feeling in this regard), of course, everyone can see and judge this differently.

Sometimes I think, PLEASE go back to your roots....
("Richwood | XerJoff", "Irisss | XerJoff", "Amber Star | XerJoff", etc.)

And now have a nice day/evening or whenever you read this review, best regards, Benny

Retested - a simplified version of Royal Tobacco with the addition of syrupy fig and dry saffron. It's OK.

Sweet, spicy, balsamic.
Fig, maple syrup, tonka, patch.
A bit tipsy, like the price.
Pleasant, but not Duran Duran.

Theme hit, wild licorice, mild coffee, lots of spice, a bit of sweetness. Just like Duran Duran! Very good sillage on my skin.

Like dark coffee, the unfortunately artificial sweetness of maple syrup and caramel feels dense, with rum lurking beneath.
