When this came out, and after watching some yt impressions, i thought it would be something "big". Since 2015, with Sauvage, we didnt had anything that popular in the mainstream audience and this is the first new YSL masculine line since 2017's Y EDT.

When i smelled it, i immediately liked it and understood the controversial opinions. It has all the ingredients for The success.

1⁰ it was, right away, very controversial on out community and yet, very popular in the mainstream world
2⁰ the smell is very appealing and "familiar"
3⁰ its very loud and longlasting

Sauvage was all of these. I remember seeing a lot of hate for Sauvage and now, it's a classic and a best seller.

The same is happening with MYSLF. Its in every online shop's top 10 or 20 best selling fragrances for men. And its going popular for a reason. Its unique in a way, but yet familiar, and will give compliments.

Opens up with bergamot, Orange Blossom and Ambroxan. The Bergamot-Ambroxan is reminiscent of other masculine scents (hello again, Sauvage) but it smells somewhat new. The Orange Blossom turns this one into a completely different scent. Usually, an orange blossom scent is super fresh and short living. More of a cologne type of style. Fleur Du Mâle was a different take on the ingredient but it was more focused on a barbershop scent with a big dose of camomile too. Here, you get a strong sweet, floral, woody scent. It has some similarities with YSL Libre but more Woody. Patchouli is there and it helps beeing masculine.

It can give noseblind like Sauvage does, specially if you overspray it, since it's very strong and it has that "synthetic" quality that many people dislike. When people say they cant smell it, it's nose blind. It happens with me sometimes

The scent is controversial because it's an ambroxan bomb and ambroxan works different on every nose. Some hate the smell, some get noseblind and say it does not perform, and others enjoy it, like myself (in small doses).

I find it somewhat unique and i think it will define a new genre of florals for men. Like Sauvage, 1Million, Invictus or Le Mâle clones, i think we will see many MYSLF clones for the next years to come.

Saying that, i dont think this is the best new thing or masterpiece, but its disruptive in a way, and i like that. It has personality, liking it or not.

Clean, Fresh, Smooth, but not Outstanding
YSL's MYSLF didn't find its way onto my "To Test" list, as I didn't find the notes breakdown interesting or eye-catchy in anyway. Nevertheless, I got my hands onto a sample. And for the most part, I was right. But I also underestimated MYSLF.

It opens pretty synthetic, thing I did not expect. But after a minute or two, that initial synthetic blast turns into a nice, citrusy bergamot. It is aided by the orange blossom which gives MYSLF an immediate flowery feel, but not in a feminine way necessarily. If anything, it smells very similar to clean laundry or a high quality soap. And it keeps that pleasing, clean profile across the whole wearing.

As it settles down, the ambrofix and woody notes come into play too, just to give MYSLF a bit more depth. But they do not overpower the clean laundry-like scent. All-in-all, it's a pleasing, high-quality clean smell, which is very hard to dislike, but it's also hard to be impressed by.

In terms of longevity, MYSLF really impressed me. I didn't expect anything more than 6 or so hours. And yet here I am, over 10 hours since I sprayed it on me and I can still just ever so slightly catch a glimpse of it. That doesn't translate to good projection too, however. Although for the first hour or two, I had a solid two feet of projection, it then abruptly closed in to my skin; still noticeable, but definitely not beast mode. Still, I'm more than pleased with the longevity, and I'd say that you don't need any more than 5-7 sprays of MYSLF.

For occasions, jeez, I mean you can literally wear this anywhere. School, work, going out, events... It's a great leisure, everyday, signature fragrance that won't offend anyone. Sure, maybe it's not the best choice for partying or dressed up events, where you want to stick out and smell different. But if you just want to smell clean, out-of-the-shower-like, then you might have a winner here.

But I still can't ignore the fact that it is nothing special. It's not a scent profile that's worth phoning home about, nor one that will have you stick out from the crowd. It's basic, but very pleasing. It's somewhat linear, but very high-quality. It's not a beast-mode projector, but it's got some great longevity (at least on my skin). Although I think it is a bit overpriced (though in the end, you're paying for the brand), I believe that MYSLF would do just great as a signature scent for the spring and summer, but you can rock this all year if you want. You could also check out Myslf Le Parfum ; maybe you'd like that one more, even though there's a lot of different opinions on it.

Still, the fact remains: MYSLF is a good fragrance that isn't doing anything groundbreaking, but because it isn't trying to. It's a fragrance that suits everyone and that few can dislike, but also few will love it.

Soulless business, not art
For me, the value of art has a lot to do with the reason it was created. Why does a perfumer create a fragrance (other than, of course, being commissioned/paid to do so)? As an artist myself, I think that art is mainly communication - the transfer of a feeling, memory, emotion from one human being to another. If you give a perfumer full freedom, they would create something special to themselves; a feeling they have had or an association they have made with a memory, and when you wear it, you get a glimpse of their emotional state. But when the creative direction is controlled by a bureaucracy, focus groups, and businesspeople, well, this is what you get.

So why then was YSL MYSLF created? For the same reason that Apple releases a new iPhone every year, regardless of whether there are any new features. It wasn't because anyone had something to say, some emotion or feeling to communicate to an audience. It wasn't because they wanted to create anything new or exciting, or challenge the status quo. It was to fool people into thinking that somehow because of the new packaging or advertising, that this is something different than already exists on every department store shelf in the world. "Go buy our new fragrance simply because it is new."

The most ironic thing is the name, which is actually quite reflective of modern attitudes toward individuality. As if this scent could ever make you embrace any sort of individuality; it places you firmly into a box of "soapy aromatic amber" like so many others before it. But isn't it appropriate? People today only know how to express their individuality by joining a enormous collective: whether it is by listening to a certain podcast which millions of others listen to, supporting a candidate millions of other support, or believing in a cause the vast majority of people around them also believe in.

The marketing for MYSLF advertises it as sort of a "skin but better" scent, saying, "a fragrance that seamlessly fuses with your skin, revealing a distinct signature for each individual." But it fails in that spectacularly. It is squarely an ambroxan-fueled aromatic amber with some soapy neroli thrown in - a far cry from subtle musky "skin but better" scents.

Why did we need this fragrance? What does it do that other fragrances, even in YSL's own line, don't do? Does it serve any purpose other than being the "new" thing on the shelf for department store salespeople to push?

A cologne with a feminine touch
Packaging:
At the department store you’ll very quickly notice the similarity of Ysl “Myslf” and its bigger sister “Libre” by the same brand. The packaging is almost identical, but whereas Libre comes with golden writing, Myslf comes with the same black and white wrapping, but with black letters.
Whether or not this similarity in wrapping is supposed to trigger associations to the Libre line or not are unknown, but at first glance “Myslf” could be (mis…?)- interpreted as a flanker to the Libre line.

The bottle:
The bottle reeks of quality to me. It’s minimalistic and classy at the same time.
The Esthetics of the tall, sleek and black glass bottle is superb, and would fit in nicely in almost every bedroom or bathroom across the modern world. It’s just elegant and modern looking.
As for the associations made by its appearance I tend to read it as both masculine and feminine at once. It kinda looks both like a black monolith as well as a black eyeliner at once. And as such it paints the picture of the scent within.

The scent:
This perfume opens up with a combination of a rather strong bergamot accord alongside the main actor, the orange blossom. Ten minutes into the experience the scent begins to changes to my nose, and the bergamot slowly start to faint into the background a bit while the orange blossom gets more dominant for every minute. Through the next 3-5 hours you’ll enjoy a very noticeable orange blossom note that comes of increasingly powdery and creamy as time goes by. Towards the end of the fragrance life you’ll experience the base notes with its obvious ambrofix and patchouli notes. At this point the perfume has turned into somewhat of a skin scent to me.

The name of the fragrance and its ambitions: Myslf - aka Male-ysl-Female.

As for the scent profile and Ysl’s ultimate goal to achieve a somewhat androgynous perfume for men, I’ll very much compliment their work and efforts. To me and my nose id stray clear of the term androgynous in my evaluation of the scent. There’s nothing tomboy-y over this perfume nor is there anything super masculine or girly girly. To me this is a refined piece of art that catches the shades of femininity that rests inside every man. I write “every man” as we all posses both masculine attributes as well as feminine ones. To me this fragrance pay tribute to men’s feminine sides in a great way.
To me I find this fragrance feminine, but done so in an ambiguous way. Which is why it’s best describes as “a feminine cologne for men”. It’s soft and tender, but nothing inherently female nonetheless. Idk, it’s just soft, warm and inviting I suppose.

I’ll say that this perfume helps widening the scope for male perfumery and it gives us men something that can reflect our complexity in a better way than before its launch. It fills some of the gap that has been missing for decades in male perfumes. I’d argue that it’s not something to fret about for those who prefer more classically masculine scents as they complement each other in a perfume wardrobe as I see it. In the same way as heavy ambers, leathers and spice goes for winter and citric scents shine in the summer this one adds to all of this by offering a great floral year round.

Sillage:
Ysl Myslf has a great sillage in my experience. It’s very noticeable as far as two-three meters away, and you will be complimented on this by a lot of women. They love it!

Longevity:
6-8 hours, but heavy projection for approximately around 3-4 hours.

Versatility:
Pretty much every occation and season but funerals. A real crowd pleaser and non offending.

Safe blind buy?
Yes, but only if you appreciate a feminine touch in your perfume. To me it’s delicate and tender, but then again taste varies.

Value for money: Good.

It’s getting hate ATM…
… so that means people are going to LOVE it in 9 months .

All kidding aside, my wife thinks it smells great, and a lot of women I come in contact with say the same thing. They really like it.

Personally, when I first sprayed it, I was worried that it was leaning too feminine. The orange blossom makes itself present , and you WILL feel the flowery vibe it gives. It also seems that it’s a light, low projection/low sillage scent, but as I walked around, I kept getting “phantom wafts” of it; it’s easy to go nose blind to it, but it isn’t as bad as you think. Also, when I went outside into higher temps, it got MUCH louder.

My initial thoughts were a dislike, but I got more and more addicted to it as time passed. I couldn’t stop smelling my wrist.

I went home without buying it, and woke up to still smell the SINGLE SPRAY on my wrist. I immediately went back and bought a bottle.

Projection is difficult, as I said above I was nose blind, but sillage IS there, as is the longevity.

Not for everyone, but it’s hated more than it deserves to be.

It's decent. Void of individuality. Leaves a soapy film in my mouth when breathed in. Perfect for people who want to blend into the crowd.

A mess! Synthetic, sweet, fruity, bubblegummy, slightly woody. Nothing new, a cheap smelling scent for young people, with a poor longevity.

Clean, fresh, floral, but pretty generic. Reminds me of clean laundry. For leisure and everyday wear, it's good and a safe blind buy, tho.

Nice, relaxing fragrance. The white floral note sells it for me, I love white floral in fragrances. The scent is reminiscent of grape juice.
