The new flagship of the Y-Line?
This perfume smells atypical to other Elixir perfumes. These are usually the flagships of a line or even a brand, but here? NO! Here we have Y-DNA on a fresh wash base with OK longevity. Oud and incense? Where are you? You're among the fragrance notes, but you can't smell any of it. Just a lot of geranium and lavender. You could have been such a beautiful perfume, but unfortunately you can't compete with your predecessors. Not a bad perfume, but not a great spectacle either. If you love the Y-Line and still want a fresh laundry Y fragrance, you will find your happiness here.

The Y-smoke elixir
Y-smoke ... Incense ... do you understand? ;P

As a YSL fanboy and proud owner of many fragrances, including some from the Y series, I was of course very amused and excited that the good Yves is now bringing out a new, intensified version of the series.

And when I got a free sample of it in a store the other day without even asking for it, it was clear that a detailed test was soon to come ;)

In the opening, I was immediately struck by a slightly sour, sophisticated version of Y DNA. However, the incense accord immediately builds up and completely ruins the fragrance for me.

For me, incense is similar to pepper in food:
If you can perceive it in isolation and it doesn't get lost in the overall composition, it's too much of it for me and spoils the taste a little.

Unfortunately, this makes it primarily an incense fragrance for me, like This Is Him!, where this cool, dusty aura just hangs over everything.

I also think that this is not necessarily good for this already very conservative, fresh-blue men's fragrance, as it simply comes across as more serious and distant.
Acqua di Giò Profumo Parfum is actually on a very similar track, but integrates the soft smoke much more subtly and therefore better.

I cannot confirm that Y Elixir is supposed to contain oud, as I was unable to detect this.

Oud, the hyped fragrance that so many manufacturers have been trying to market profitably since M7 (2002) Eau de Toilette... very few in the mainstream really manage it.

but Versace pour Homme Oud Noir has already shown that it works well, it really makes sense there and is integrated into the fragrance, giving it an erotic slant. Or, for that matter, Tschäremie Frägränzes Date for Men, which quite successfully weaves a Gaultier Ultra Male-like DNA with oud to create a sensual experience.

There, the oud really makes sense, but here, in a cool blue fragrance that is almost devoid of any emotion,- to me it just seems like a drop of smokiness on the cool stone. ;P

I'm really curious to see what other reviews you have to say, and whether you perceive more than I do, or whether I even missed the sensation in the drydown, as I was so bored by the middle section that I gave in.

But in the end, the only question that remains for me is, Y incense YSL, y?

;)

Scentwise underrated, but I get the disappointment
So for me the smell is definitely way better than a 6.5 which is the current average rating.

I'd give it an 8.5. For me it's the best Y Fragrance from the line (on my skin, not necessarily on paper). And on my Skin it also smells by far the highest quality. So I actually get the official marketing text saying "highest quality ingredients etc.".

After testing it on skin I would get it over the EDP, the EDP intense and the le Parfum. Not for retail price of course, but you can get it for a quite decent price right now.

It's very masculine, it's fresh, a tiny bit fruity, a bit spicy, a bit woody. Incense and oud is minimal to non-existent, but the rest seems quite high quality to me for a designer fragrance.

On my skin it reminds me a lot of Bleu de Chanel but I think I even like Y l'elixir a bit more because I find Bleu de Chanel so very boring.

I say it's quite a good blue fragrance, not for retail price but for discount for sure.

Now to the name. Is the title of elixir fitting for this fragrance? No absolutely not in my opinion. It does not seem to be super beast mode for me, it's not experimental or ingenious and it's not super dark and concentrated. For me it's just the highest quality YSL Y perfume and that's that. So I can understand the disappointment, but the scent itself is fine.

Edit: Okay so I finally bought Y l'Elixir and got it yesterday and gave it a full wear today. So far I'm loving it. Especially for the 75 € I paid for it.

I sprayed 3 sprays on my neck (mainly on the clothes) this morning and I still smell it quite a bit on myself after 8 hours. So for me Sillage is good, Longevity is good. And I perceive it as indeed way darker, way richer and a bit more incensy / smokey compared to the rest of the line and indeed a bit unusual / daring with a tiny bit of oud. For me the best Blue Fragrance right now with an amazing Dark, Incense, floral special twist. In the Marketing Text it's called a "dark and white fougere" which for me fits perfectly. Thus for me elixir is in the end an okay label for this scent.

But it is very well blended and I think you need to be quiet sensible to get the quality and the nuances of the ingredients. The only thing I don't like is the bottle. It should have gotten at least a magnetic cap and a nicer package. It's really mid.

So that's at least my take on and my experience with the Y l'Elixir.

YSL Y 4.0
As a casual fan of the Y Line, I was excited to try a darker version - I love oud and incense and was curious to see how it would integrate with the Y DNA.

Now that I've been able to test it on skin, it's really quite different from the descriptions I've read so far.

For me, the opening is clearly citrusy. Grapefruit, bergamot? I can't say exactly - but not necessarily fresh - rather dark/ripe/rounded - but clearly noticeable with good sillage for 1-2 hours.

Then it becomes a little soapy, a little woody and still rounded. Only after 4/5 hours is it for me the familiar but also more rounded Y DNA.

Nothing earth-shattering - but pleasant. If you don't have anything from the range yet - No. 1 for me vs. EDP and Le Parfum. Simply has more to offer.

But perhaps not absolutely necessary if you already have EDP or Le Parfum.

Smells pretty good actually!
This fragrance gets so much hate. Yes it is a designer release and we do not expect a niche smell; It is kinda expensive for this category, I get that; but if we wanna talk about scent profile, longevity, etc, we have a fairly good release here.

The smell kind of grew on me. It is made by "Dominique Ropion" after all. I think this is a new interpretation of elixir and it fits the title as it has a dense feeling in the smell (same as other elixir fragrances but here mainly on a lavender based scent profile, which I found it done well) and lasted on me nearly 24 hours, so this thing is strong!

I think compared to some other recent designer releases like Armani Code Parfum , which has a pretty close retail price for the 60ml bottle: Y elixir has definitely higher quality ingredients and better longevity.

P.S. On skin it smells better than on paper specially after an hour, which mid and base notes start to shine.

This is actually very nice. I do get the clean designer rubbery oud. Smooth. Very hated and very underrated. 8.5/10

180 is a bit steep yes... Its just the safe scent profile in the opening that leaves you wanting a bit more. Wonderful in the air and dry-down.

Wood was never the strength of the Y line; this should have been a blue masterpiece and instead it’s just weak synth oud.

Cleaned laundry and synthetic woods. Regrettably, this would have been a nice drugstore fragrance if it wasn't for the YSL bottle and price.
