A Sweet Freezer Burn
This one was very odd on my skin. When first applied, vetiver takes the main stage, but is soon replaced by a sweetened cedar. On my clothing, vetiver and neroli create a spicy green scent with a hint of sweetened cocoa.

After an hour, I began to smell like freezer burn on my skin. On my clothing it remained a very sweet green scent with a slight hint of carrot and spice.

The longevity/sillage was okay. You would need a good 4 hits to make this one stay a bit longer. But I do find unlike the other Zoologist scents I've, this one stops morphing after 30 minutes so the adventure isn't as interesting. I do feel as if the original Beaver represents the animal a bit better than this one. I got more of a caterpillar vibe than a beaver.

Sweet, syrupy, woody maple tree turns to dusty sawdust
I only have one Zoologist fragrance in my collection, so I was pretty excited to finally land on the samples I've been hoarding from them. Now is the time to try them all!

Beaver is quite wearable if you enjoy woody fragrances (which is unfortunately not the case for me and the main reason why it won't be going into my collection). The beginning is a bit unusual as it has a light, fresh scent to it with some soft floral. Doesn't take long before maple arrives and it smells so good: sweet, syrupy maple goodness. The maple syrup pairs well with the deep woody note that starts to surge forward. A sweet / woody accord that is very nice to wear on the skin for colder temperatures. The woodiness starts to overtake everything during the drydown and it starts smelling like dusty sawdust with a hint of animalic behind. I do get some sweetness, but it has shifted towards a dusty cocoa / vanilla kind of sweetness; no longer a maple, sugary sweetness. The drydown is clearly in the men's territory (the second reason why I won't be going for a bottle).

I haven't tested the OG Beaver so I can't really compare both, but I find this one wearable amongst the more challenging Zoologist offerings. I do recommend you try it out as it's definitely not a safe blind-buy.

So close to being great
The vision is definitely here: the woody notes with the maple syrup and flowers bring to mind some kind of romanticized version of a beaver dam in the forest that I'm all here for. But there's something about the combination of notes that's just not working for me as well as it should be. Maybe it's the airy note, which permeates most of the scent. Unlike the older Beaver (2016) the airy and animalic notes don't add to the scene or give naturalistic contrast, they seem to take away in my opinion. The result is something that is neither entirely satisfying as an animalic or a straight gourmand scent. Still, it's a decent frag, just not one I ended up loving like I thought I would

Semisweet dry woods
I like this. It begins as roasted maple wood with the slightest touch of sweetness. It has an airy quality to it, like you're outside near a logging mill. Cocoa slowly emerges to play a supporting role, and it ends with a slightly animalic leathery castoreum playing with the middle and top notes.

It lasted impressively long on me. I could still smell it projecting many hours later. I'm actually quite impressed with the performance.

I feel like this one will grow more and more on me.

Wasted potential
One of the worst new Zoologist.
Flat, cheap manly aroma. The brand's been changing, releasing mediocre creations. It lacks creativity and quality.

Chaotic blend of spices and woods.
Generally geat idea with naming scents related to animals and trying to present scented thoughts about but not this time.
Uncomperable with the brand's scents released before 2020.

Green-woody chips. Sated, not yet satisfied. Greedily craving for moooore. Gnawed the tree to the bone. Sickly sweet syrup spoiling the fur.

An interesting green, sweetened cocoa scent on clothing, but pure freezer burn on skin after 10 minutes. Time to throw the bread out.

early spring thawing earth and meltwater and aquatic plants leafing out and wet wood and maple sap. took ~4 tries and 6 months for me to like this!

Maple-glazed carrots, no beavers here. Castoreum note is nonexistent. One of the more boring Zoologist scents.

Conifers with a dash of syrup. Neroli brightens the whole thing up, preventing it from becoming too heavy. A gentle vanilla finish.
