a Chuck Tingle eucalyptus

Koala from Zoologist is an aromatic-green-soapy incense-balsamic black tea-geranium sandalwood cologne with eucalyptus and pine. It’s dapper somehow, but the ironic dapper of a 25-year-old in 2013 with a handlebar mustache and a pork pie hat. It’s the refreshing, relaxing scent of a spa, but these dapper, ironic hipsters run the entire spa. And I don’t even know if I want to call it irony or absurdity or even farcical, but after a while, it doubles back on itself, and it’s almost painfully earnest, it’s got a genuine “love is real and I was pounded in the butt by my sentient spa experience” Chuck Tingle title vibe. I don’t know what that means. I’m all over the place for what is probably a very approachable and wearable perfume. That’s kind of wild, that I have no problem describing the weirdies, but the normies are the ones that give me pause. Anyway, I think this is both a sincere and sardonic eucalyptus scent. That’s my final word on it.

Euca-lovely

Koala smells clean, cosy and a bit fuzzy in all the right ways. From the gently uplifting eucalyptus opening to the woody dry down, Koala is just very pleasant, friendly and safe. It’s like the dry, warmed up eucalyptus and pine wood you can smell when sitting in a Scandinavian sauna. It’s warm and comforting like a log cabin, not icy cool and sharp like you might expect from notes like menthol and eucalyptus.

I’m usually very seasonal with fragrances, but once in a while an all year rounder comes along and Koala is one of them for me. It never gets too heavy, spicy, or wintry, but never too crisp or icy either. Just always right, like the perfect in-between: warm without heat, fresh without chill. Koala keeps its own gentle climate, no matter the season.

It is very light though and fades very quickly on my skin, but other than that it's a lovely scent. Might have to do with the little spray from my sample too, so luckily I've got a full bottle on the way.

On first spray, Koala has the cool, green ambiance of eucalyptus with the menthol sweetness of cinnamon gum. In fact, if you have ever chewed cinnamon bark, smelling this fragrance evokes the same sensation. Woody, sweet, and paradoxically spicy yet frosted. At hour three of five, the chewed cinnamon becomes very faint, and pervasive eucalyptus instead partners with an incensed, slightly pissy oakmoss.

Zoologist Making Eucalyptus and Menthol Wearable

Wow, I was surprised to like this one as much as I did. The first few minutes are an intense blast of eucalyptus and menthol which are two notes I don't normally like, but if you give it time, Koala morphed into a bright soapy, honeyed, eucalyptus and menthol treat. What I like about this one is that the incense adds a darkness to the scent making it so beautiful

The longevity is mid tier and will need to be resprayed at around the 4 hour mark for the upkeep, but you will then have to live through the eucalyptus and menthol blast zone again. Your work neighbors may not love this.

I was really surprised to love this scent as much as I did. It's really difficult to make me love eucalyptus and menthol, but Zoologist did it. So if you are like me, get a sample and give it a try. You might actually enjoy it!
