Not your typical Chypre
Chypre Noir opens with a generous dose of sweet citruses. Blood orange and Bergamot are vibrant, zingy and smell completely natural. The bright, citrus opening is tamed by a soft black tea note as well as mongolian musk. The musk adds just a slight hint of animalic allure to ground the fragrance and create a unique musky skin quality.
As the opening notes dry down, the mossy notes and a slight incense/smokiness from the myrrh start to creep in. To me, this is where the fragrance truly starts to resemble a more classic chypre style of fragrance. The green earthy moss, mixed with the citrus and slight smokiness creates that classic chypre style, while still remaining unique, and unmistakably an Ensar perfume. I think what really takes Chypre Noir in a different direction is the use of Papua Oud. The green, minty vibes of Papua oud adds a sort of woody greenness that in many other chypres might typically come from patchouli, labdanum and leather.
As the perfume continues to dry down, the base maintains a subtle sweetness, but is mostly dominated by a soft, wafting smoky incense. It is not a thick or powerful smokiness, but a lingering, tingly resinous smoke from myrrh which retains a slight citrus quality.
Chypre Noir is a pleasant, easy wearing chypre style perfume, that both resembles the classic chypre composition, but also does its own thing. I think most people would be able to enjoy this one, but those looking for that big, bold oud and animalic Ensar quality might want to look at other offerings.
