Understated and underrated
Well this is a peculiar scent indeed. Deceptively simple, to say the least, and easily dismissable as just another synthetic designer (as if these were both negative points per se, by the way...). Basically Jako is a sort of plummy-citrus-soapy-woody (sandalwood) scent with a really clean look and a filthier musky-leather undertone, like a guy living a double life. Spicy notes and sweet nuances are there, mostly coming from tonka and vanilla, but they’re tamed down enough; more than sweet, Jako appears rather powdery to me, with a general slight smokiness, perfectly blended with all the brighter stuff – citrus, sandalwood, plum. The opening shows a juicy fruity accord which however vanishes quite quickly, at least partially, leading Jako to woodier and more “greyish” territories. It may sound a bit messy, but it’s just complex (more than it may seem), while smelling perfectly nice, clean, modern and fairly understated. Basically it smells like a martian hybrid between something like Jaipur Homme (for the spicy powderiness), the citrus-tart milkiness à la Kenzo Jungle Homme, and a couple of Lang’s, notably Cuiron for the plummy-leather stuff, and Eau de Cologne for the clean aseptic muskiness. All with that late-‘90s feel – a bit synthetic, a bit tacky, but in a good way. Somewhere at the crossroad lies Jako, with a couple of differences: it’s more subtle than all of those, and it has a couple of more peculiar nuances – something medicinal for instance, like cough syrup, and a slight, weird moldy feel underneath the rest. Overall I find Jako much interesting, quite pleasant to wear (regardless of its "interest"), fairly modern and really easy to pull off - you can forget about its complexity and stuff and just enjoy a clean, bright, discreet scent. The sweet-powdery notes make it undoubtedly a bit feminine, but in my opinion Jako remains overall actually quite androgynous and even a bit aloof – like a futuristic “robot dandy” if you want. Also, with some nice darker shades; the musk, the leather. It’s close to skin as I said, but you feel its understated radiance for many hours. The main flaw for me is the drydown, which is kind of boring and a little disappointing (light, short-lived and a bit “sweaty”).

Grab the Plum... Hic
What a lush, only to be found in the bay,
your alcohol-soaked plum is quite a sensation.

Stinging, pricking, the 90s meet the Orient & roses,
Many have memories of you, but rather the loose ones.

Not as soft as some of today’s fruits,
but you don’t shock the people either.

For a rainy autumn day, an evening in a bar,
yes, you would shine purple, you would be the star.

Your now-called money is not quite worth it in quality,
unless a fan, who yearns for you inside.

I’ve never smelled such a plum before,
you are unique & mischievous like a sprite.

Cardamom makes you sweet, Frapin could sell you well,
you are better than today’s market, that’s for sure.

Plum schnapps meets rose sugar & youth,
to be like you, that would be a virtue today.

Bottle: simple but with striking details
Sillage: rather autumnal & alcohol-sweet, yet not just a party-goer.
Longevity: 6-7 hours - today’s Lagerfelds dream of that!

Conclusion: juicy, deeply dark Oriental plums soaked in hard alcohol - yet another fine fellow who has left us!

When you sift through stored perfumes in the basement and find a diamond.
I have been decluttering for a while now. This happens when you move into your aunt's house and then have to go through many, many "heirlooms" (this has been going on for 2 years now). Today, I came across a box - not from her this time. Inside: dozens of men's perfumes from my dear one. And oh my God, way at the back, I saw JAKO.

I still remembered the scent as something special. So I quickly grabbed Walter and sprayed the perfume. And I am thrilled. It MUST be used again. What an incredibly wonderful scent!

It starts fresh, somewhat fruity, with a distinctly noticeable plum. After about 10 minutes, the cardamom comes through with ginger and a bit of woodiness. The plum is still very much present as well.

And then, then comes the kicker for me, a beautifully intertwined scent that is oriental in nature, finely incense-like & spicy, leathery. Gentle. Not the kind of punchy scents I often smell today. Somehow very noble and different. Definitely wearable in the colder season.

Riddle of the Old Villa: Slightly Waxy Plum Amidst Some Woods
The hype around Karl Lagerfeld had reached a temporary peak back then, around the release of "Jako" 16 years ago.

The neoclassical villa he had acquired in Hamburg at that time bore the same name "Jako" and was upgraded by him in terms of design.

Meanwhile, "Jako" no longer exists as a fragrance, and the villa has long been put up for sale. If something becomes too costly or boring for Karl...

Back then, I quite liked the fragrance; a friend had it. However, since we didn't all want to smell the same, I only bought it myself years later.

Almost forgotten, but a test should now reveal the old villa riddle of how it performs in 2014 (to quote my favorite old youth radio play series TKKG):

"Jako" starts off fruity with garden fruits, primarily plum, accompanied by a hint of mandarin. A bit of ginger "pricks" in, resulting in a slightly citrusy-sharp note.
Well, the old villa may house gnarled plum trees in its garden; it has a somewhat autumnal-fruity feel to it.

A slightly waxy note hovers over the aromas, which does not emerge from the ingredient list above. It could be benzoin.

Medium-spiced, after the initial plum, a hint of dry cardamom unfolds, with a bit of floral and slightly herbaceous woodiness from rosewood mixing in.

A few flowers in the villa park, alongside a few logs for the fireplace?
A very light smokiness then replaces the waxiness of the early phase, possibly the incense, which, however, has been used very moderately compared to today's dosages.

Overall, the fragrance "blurs" a bit into an uncomplicated, office-friendly blend of slightly dried garden fruits and softened woodiness.
Usable, solid for sure, but the beautified youth (style) memory no longer holds up against today's, among other things, matured fragrance perception due to Parfumo.

There is a bit of a struggle with the mediocre harmony of the phases and the unnecessarily waxy early phase.

A Little Deception.....
The summery fresh first impression is truly a little deception. I don't want to know how many men have made a wrong purchase. It develops completely differently than expected. The top note is "nice" but not spectacular. The transformation comes afterwards... The heart and base turn into a journey to the Orient. Just go and test it yourself, but not before autumn!!!

This reminds me of Rosendo Mateu #5.
I prefer Jako though. A more wearable less clawing scent. Great fragrance overall!

I only had the scent once.....I think it was 1999....or 2000. I loved it. That spice in the fragrance was unique.

That was the escape from the self-imposed immaturity of the fragrance-obsessed teenager. Thank you, Jako!

A brief visit of citrusy fruitiness quickly drifts into a synthetic woody-musty direction :/ If plum, then Andy Warhol!

A striking presence, yet very rounded. It tries to please everyone - and succeeds. A beautiful blend of woody, fruity, fresh.

A very contrasting scent. Fresh, herbal, floral, leathery. The plum always kind of annoyed me. Still, I would like it again.
