Forest-Surrounded Ancient Sawmill
I had gotten the perfume last June, blindly bought this, expecting somehow what follows, but after unboxing and a quick sniff, I realised it was more suitable for the humid and cold autumn months. Therefore, I put it away in the wardrobe, waiting for the season's arrival in which the temperatures drop, the leaves fall, and everything is coloured with yellowish, reddish, and amber reflections. And here it is, officially started a few days ago. Classic Gray is now part of my seasonal rotation; these are my feelings. Different from Lagerfeld Classic Eau de Toilette and Photo Eau de Toilette as three disparate perfumes, it is not a flanker, but all three are the same only in the bottle. Yes, because for this perfume, Karl Lagerfeld chose the same bottle, here in the smoky grey version, used for the Classic and Photo.

Classic Gray immediately reveals itself as a semi-fresh essence with woody solid, modern tones and polishes rich in Iso-E Super. It is slightly flowery and leathery, but the resinous, musky, dry woods are the dominant characteristic characterising this creation. Everything revolves around a mix of cedar woods from disparate places such as India and Africa and oak wood. It is unnecessary to read the olfactory pyramid; one immediately senses the presence of cedar in the concoction. In the background of this wooden accord, rather than in the foreground, the modest, slightly aromatic, and green notes of the foliage and ears are heard. The combination of laurel and hazel creates a beautiful semi-green effect with somewhat herbaceous and slightly creamy aspects thanks to the lavender. The hazelnut smell is smooth, modicum, nutty, but not gourmand. It is not the classic fougére or even a barbershop. Among the fresh, green and woody accords, a sweetish but not annoying touch is perceived, thanks to the vanilla present in the base.

As the notes supporting the opening calm down, the woods carved in the heart intensify, taking on even more shape and momentum, leaving a distinctive trail with that dry hint of freshly sharpened pencil shavings. Here, the sillage is intense and downwind; you receive all the nuances of cedar and oak woods, one fresh and semi-dry and the other a little musky. The wearer may become anosmic and not perceive its nuances after wearing it. But I assure you that those near it, especially downwind, receive this fragrance's woody beauty. Last night, I was walking behind my hubby, and I could smell his perfume. When I asked him what he had worn, he replied, "Karl Lagerfeld, the grey one with the ring on the cap, what else?". This confirms that the perfume smells better from a distance than directly from the skin.

After a few hours, two to three, the fragrance enters dry-down mode; it becomes a skin perfume, and you need to bring your nose closer to an application point to better feel the accords. The more pungent woods take a step back, giving way to a creamier sandalwood with musky and vanilla nuances. But all this remains virile; vanilla does not dominate the woods; it only adds a touch of sweetness without overflowing into powdery or sugary. The nutty effect is felt for the entire duration of the perfume.

Without mincing words, Classic Gray met my expectations. I confirm daily and evening use, ideal for both going to work and for free time. It's not too spicy or leathery but plenty woody. I find it unique and couldn't find a similarity with other perfumes. Moderate performance: it lasts quite a few hours, but it quickly moves close to the skin.

I'm basing my thoughts on a bottle I've owned since June 2023.

Karl's Smooth Breeze
Yes, I’m a Lagerfeld enthusiast and that's why I blindly bought this fragrance. That said, I like this scent especially: It’s very smooth and lovely for the office, perfect as a signature fragrance.

So yeah, I really enjoy it, but I also have to say that it isn’t a fragrance for everyone and the main reason - not insignificant - is that it’s a soft fragrance with a shy projection.

For some office settings it can even be a positive, but because of how good it smells, it usually leaves you wanting more. if this juice had better performance, it would be an amazing “Home Run”.

*UPDATE*: However, I have to say that I’ve received several compliments from different girls when I could barely smell it, so it may be an olfactory habituation effect.

In any case, it's still one of my favorite unexpected releases of this year, despite its performance.

So, synthesizing:

The scent is fresh, woody, slightly herbal, sweet and creamy... And without a doubt very easy to please and smooth like a comfortable breeze slightly sweet.

Longevity is moderate (over 6 hours) and soft projection. It can be used all year round and although it’s mild, on a date it’ll work wonders.

Perfect as a signature scent and feels great with a modern suit: “Suave” is the key here.

Comfortable autumn wear
A relatively simple and linear, yet lovely fragrance, that will make for a nice, easy, comfortable autumn wear.

A soft blend, smooth, calmly woody, with just a hint of supportive freshness, enveloping enough in a close, comforting bubble scent -- grey indeed! Its inoffensive projection fits the scent profile. On my skin it will last the day fading graciously, albeit without revealing any secret, its linearity being IMHO its weakest point.

Through the day I find myself wanting for a « more » version: more refined, more layers, more quality ingredients, more concentration (some irritating few seconds of alcohol at first spray), but that’s what it often is at this price point, and honestly it fits the bill quite well and is well done.

All around happy to wear it, in rotation so as to not get bored with it.

Cheap sprayer though, of the water gun kind, that really is a bummer. Cheap cap too.

Flankermania ... now also at Lagerfeld?
My first review here on Parfumo was about "Lagerfeld Cologne/Classic"
This fragrance is my signature scent, as it evokes the most emotional memories.
So I was naturally curious when a flanker was announced...

When I saw that it was available at DM, I immediately had my wife pick it up for me. At first, the two statements had put me off... but as always, I prefer to form my own opinion.

My impression:
I wore the fragrance in a "full body test" and my impression is as follows.
As the fragrance pyramid shows, this is a woody scent with a linear progression. Sandalwood and cedarwood are dominant here, which is why I also get these "pencil shaving" vibes.
It directly reminds me of two fragrances with a similar DNA (wood):
- Montana Graphite
- Mauboussin Une Histoire d'Homme Irrésistible
Both work with these woods, and Montana Graphite is the closest to Lagerfeld Classic Grey.
These three fragrances have one thing in common for me... they seem very "weak" in terms of sillage. Other people, however, do perceive them...
If you spray the fragrance under your shirt on your chest, it develops into this warm woody scent with a slight vanilla sweetness... still noticeable after 3-4 hours, but rather a skin-close scent.

My conclusion:
I didn't expect a true OG flanker, and "Grey" has nothing in common with the OG DNA. As an independent fragrance, it would be better positioned in the market.
It is a woody-spicy scent that, in my opinion, doesn't clash anywhere, but also doesn't make you stand out from the crowd.
But do you expect that from a 20-euro drugstore fragrance?
The times of KL Homme & Co. are (unfortunately) over... but not just at Lagerfeld.
Still, it doesn't deserve such negative reviews, just my 50 cents.

The Marketing Plan
Attention:
The following story is NOT based on real events and is purely fictional. Any similarities are purely coincidental. Furthermore, I would like to incorporate my perspective as an aspiring businessman in marketing communication into this story.

This is my first review with a story; whether there will be more or stylistically different ones in the future is still unclear.
Many thanks in advance to Puderperle for encouraging me to embrace a literary style.

2022 in the marketing department at Karl Lagerfeld, glorious times are far behind.

The absence of the master can be felt everywhere… fashion is sometimes appealing, sometimes not… but there is a missing product that is affordable for “many” and can share a part of the “Lagerfeld spirit” of his lifestyle, and what better way to do this than with a fragrance?
The problem is, the current fragrances may look chic in their bottles, but the criticism has not been what one would expect for the Lagerfeld brand. In terms of scent, they fall short…

The board is horrified: “No, no, no… we must do justice to the name ‘Lagerfeld’ again. Joop! is on everyone’s lips, and we?” states CEO P.P.R* with a trembling voice.
Marketing manager Mr. Viral now sees his chance.
“We have conducted market research… popular themes right now are vintage & retro. While we can’t achieve our sales with vintage, new products are being sought more specifically, and these are shown on Parfumo under New & Noteworthy: thus, we can play with the retro theme.”
“Retro? Do you think that will work?” the CEO marveled.
Mr. Viral smiled with the grin of his life. “Oh yes, at Mäurer & Wirtz we saw that they are very successful with an old look using ‘Tabac Original Craftsman’ and spreading it modernly… we can certainly keep up and use our classic, which will attract both the old fans and bind the youth to us.”

P.P.R lets his skeptical gaze turn into a nearly tearful smile: “Wow, that’s genius… but is this perfume even enough” … “No, that’s just a tool in the marketing mix… we can do much more with it. We need to see if we can get Jeremy from the red Ferrari, but we can also look further: DagiBee, Sophia Thiel, Thomas Gottschalk… maybe some rappers like Sido, Bushido, or Eko Fresh and a few reality stars & Wildecker Herzbuben, and then we sponsor Masked Singer & co… we can grab a lot there!”

“Great!!” the CEO’s eyes shine with Euro signs.
Product researcher Klara Testweg’s eyes sparkle and she asks, “But what can we name the product then…”. The meeting gets louder as the department heads murmur… until Mr. Viral exclaims: “That’s it… we stick with Lagerfeld Classic for the old fans, but we need an addition, preferably something we can show externally, and wait… Craftsman is gray, we can do that too… and bam, Classic Grey, that’s it!”

Intern Lisa-Marie Schnuffel asks: “And what should it smell like?”
“Oh, we can do something; some perfumer will make it smell a bit classic and very modern… as long as we can call the product Classic Grey, we can do anything,” sighs the CEO.

Now the fragrance was composed: a few grasses & herbs combined with sweet-synthetic wood.

The moral of the story is, it’s a good approach to want to complement a classic… but this product is soulless & has no comparability in any area with the original.
How the fragrance will fare or not, time and personal taste will decide.

For me, this is already an affront to Lagerfeld Classic, not equivalent - rather a jumping on a trend without making the effort that a Lagerfeld Classic Grey would deserve.

Thank you for reading.

The overpowered laurel almost ruins this fragrance. It’s nauseating. Once it settles it’s ok, but I ended up giving it to my brother.

Tightly packed, the guys sip creamy vanilla ice cream to AC-DC lavender sounds at the Iso-E-Super wooden coffin of the master.
I'm dreading you!

Basically quite far from the Classic, more of a relative to Montana Graphite: pencil note, wood, bay leaf, definitely unique.

Herbs and grasses spice up sweet-synthetic wood, no headaches but wonder - where is the distant connection to the Classic?

Here, a classic has been adapted to the spirit of the times. Maybe nothing extraordinary, but I like both the scent and the bottle.

Modern woody-aromatic scent. Sweet cedarwood, lots of pepper, grassy vetiver. Urgent. Reminds a bit of Marc Jacobs "Bang".

The launch. The level of Lagerfeld fragrances seems to be going down. Sweet synthetic messes that even Jeremy wouldn't hype.

It's not a masterpiece. But it's definitely not as bad as mentioned here.
