Khaan Katana 2022

The way Katana presents itself as an 'ultra-niche' house is one of my biggest icks. Still I am glad I have been able to put that fact aside and work my way through their fragrances. In the end, there are a couple of gems in their line-up. In fact, Khaan is among my favorites, despite a few imperfections.

Speaking of which, Katana's choice of citrus feels utterly peculiar to me, to put it mildly. Often they come with yuzu or other sharp citruses for a top note. Khaan starts with orange or tangerine, which is less harsh than some other Katanas but still highly acidic. There is pink lotus in the top as well, which does not help. Now add cheesy oud to that and top it up with jammy rose. Then you get something plain ugly, I can't describe it in any other way.

However, within a few minutes, the citrus levels out and the florals start to do their thing. With florals I mean roses. Not one rose, but a full regalia of them. They are all over the rose spectrum, as in jammy, fruity, acidic, green, powdery et cetera. With minimal amounts of jasmine and pink lotus present, the floral heart is in fact a pinkish bouquet, yet there is a clear focus on the rose and all of its features.

When Khaan further unfolds, it becomes clear that the roses are not the only main characters. The Siberian deer musk in Khaan is an unforgettable experience. Most commercial musks shine upon first appearance and slowly degrade into blandness. A natural musk, however, does not only stay active but also keeps getting better over time. On top of that, Khaan's musks come with a fluffiness that is simply unmatched. Quite the contrast to some 'established' artisans that go for aggressively savage animalism, which - in my view - amounts to completely butchering a precious material and its uniquely delicate properties.

So, if you are able to forgive the house's poor branding and its use of controversial materials, Khaan is the first and foremost Katana to get your nose on.

The inspiration for this fragrance comes from the emperor Cengiz Khaan: fearsome conqueror, famous for founding the Mongol kingdom.
The territory over which he ruled was immense and rich in different cultures and traditions.
In order to represent his greatness, this fragrance was composed using some of the most precious and iconic raw materials from around the world: Taif rose, damask rose, Indian Ruh Gulab, Cambodian oud, Persian saffron and lastly Siberian Deer Musk from Russia.
The opening of Khaan is an extremely refined floral bouquet with a beautiful zing of Italian mandarin.
There are also a little leathery feeling: probably saffron mixed with Cambodian oud is what gives this effect.
The heart features a mix of roses and a fair amount of Sambac jasmine (indolic).
All this rich ensemble rests on a base of oud and deer musk that is terribly sensual and inviting without any overly animalic overtones.
Overall it results in a most refined, sensual and enveloping fragrance. It is not "cloying" but rather very clear and uplifting.

One of the most beautiful rose compositions on the market. I really like this fragrance, it's very refined and sensual. The quality of this perfume is exceptional, inside there are many precious materials such as Himalayan sambac jasmine, taif rose, turkish rose, ruh gulab indian rose, iranian saffron that i can hear clearly. The composition is also supported by cambodi oud and siberian musk that give it that sophisticated touch. A wonderful fragrance!

Khaan opens with a striking burst of Siberian musk and bright green mandarin, instantly giving the fragrance a lively, sparkling character. The pairing creates a fizzy, almost carbonated sensation that feels like rose lemonade on a warm day. Soon after, the roses take center stage, and they are genuinely stunning fresh, radiant, and beautifully rounded, gliding effortlessly over the musky citrus base.

The Cambodian oud sits quietly in the background, barely noticeable and honestly unnecessary for the composition to shine. This fragrance is all about that vibrant, bubbly rose accord carried by musk and citrus. It feels tailor made for summer, projecting confidently and leaving a bright, uplifting trail wherever you go.

On my skin it still has those same aspects but the fizzy aspect is toned down slightly, The Pink Lotus and roses come far more forward giving it very elegant feeling, oud is still very quiet on skin aswell.

I was very sceptical when I was paying retail for the 30ml bottle. I have to say that roses are my weakness, especially Turkish roses. I like this perfume but it does not blow me away. It is powdery, juicy, strong rose garden with barely noticable oud. It lasts throughout the day and becomes hazy before disappearing. A little linear. Perhaps I have gotten a different batch, as I am seeing some reviews say there is intense oud.
My batch reminds me of Rose Tonnerre from Frederic Malle a little bit, but I think the rose oil used here is better quality, and Khaan is not as powdery.
Issues.... isuees... Filtration is very amateur. The juice has visible particles dancing inside (not in a Roja Haute Luxe way, these are unintentional). I am not sure if this is an artistic choice, but I wouldn't assume that failure to filter properly would have anything to do with it.
Perfumer.... is a character I must say. However, I shall not criticize the man, but only his creation.
If there is a discount, I'd say go for it. If you like roses as much as I do, you will enjoy this one. I would layer it with a little bit of oud from burning oud chips really make it pop if you have the same batch as I do.
