The woods, fresh air, grandma’s baking
This perfume is a scent, a memory, and a relic.

A relic, because of its use of some VERY special ingredients. 1840s birch tar, vintage oud, real ambergris.

A memory, because it brings me back to my childhood. My grandfather used to chop wood. On the holidays, us grandchildren would all visit in the basement. In the basement was a giant stack of chopped wood next to the wood stove. Between the slight smokiness, the fresh cut wood, and grandma’s baking upstairs the scent bares some resemblance. That, paired with the amber and ambergris notes make this one of my single favourite scents ever.

This is a 100% natural perfume. Given this information, the performance is great. I do not think it’s fair to compare natural perfumes to ones that use synthetics. That being said, this one performs very well. Could smell it on my skin the next morning after wearing. Probably would last 2 or 3 days on clothing but careful spraying this dark juice directly on clothing.

As a scent composition, the stuff is masterfully blended. I have smelled quite a few of JK DeLapp’s attars and was eager to try a spray that he had composed. This did not disappoint. The fragrance reaches a wide range of notes and they all resonate together in perfect harmony. The development is not linear yet, the fragrance never becomes unbalanced in any way. Picture a tree losing its’ leaves in the autumn. The notes slowly fade one by one but the overall picture stays balanced. In general, one of my favourite perfumes.

The Lone Hunter
Amarok, or the great wolf, a being from Inuit mythology. This wolf hunts alone and punishes those who are foolish enough to dare to hunt alone at night. However, the Amarok is not always portrayed negatively, as it also has its positive sides in mythology.

Thus, this fragrance also possesses bright and dark elements.
A balsamic coniferous forest, slightly resinous, with a hint of smokiness creates a feeling of denser air. Patchouli, iris (root), and tonka bean form the impression of a forest floor, supported by the sour element of yuzu. In the nocturnal forest, an animal presence wanders, with some leathery elements giving it more body, and the amber makes it palpable, even when the wolf is not seen. The cooled smoke creates a mystical veil. A little unease/threat can be generated by this feeling of uncertainty.
But the Amarok is not malevolent to everyone; rather, it is even helpful, which is noticeable through the brighter woods and floral notes (magnolia and jasmine) that occasionally shimmer through.

This interplay between light and dark makes the fragrance so interesting. It reflects our own feelings; sometimes we find the forest beautiful, yet it can also become eerie due to various factors.
At first, the fragrance is still somewhat positive and builds up. The gloomy traits only come into play later. And in the end, it calms down a bit again, but both halves of light and dark remain present to a certain extent in a balance.

Entheogen
Connected to the inner wolf, lonely in the darkness, succumbing to fury, hunting, approaching, rapture, entheogen. Lurking in the dark, perceiving the scent of furry leather, aware of one's own aura. Striding through the forests, glowing, nocturnal eyes hidden among coniferous woods, reciting an olfactory mantra. Sacred words sing of rough trees, swaying in the wind, defying the inhospitable terrain. Mutualistic symbiosis of animal and nature.

Intense beginning like Babylonian roar, remaining intense yet becoming more agreeable, now light spasms in the dark thicket. The balsamic notes envelop the tonal scenery. Floral notes soon creep in, taking nothing from the leathery animality and the looming dark green, enriching the overall work.
Imagining; observing fallen stars, split earth, bearing mythological gifts. The ember within glows, Amarok shines like a setting sun; faint yet warm - despite diametrically opposed impressions.

But after the darkest hour come brighter moments - both in the cycle of day and night as well as in the course of life. Amarok becomes grayer, friendlier as daylight in the painted scenery dispels the nocturnal images, a fresh, cool breeze seems to waft through the evergreens. Soft woody amber notes, melting, envelop moderate patchouli. Always leathery, always woody, the latter tanned by harsh weather down to fine, worked oak. Gentle sandalwood, whispering tonka nuances.

Sublimely bound to an oud duet, progressively groundbreaking, omnipresent, encompassing, coherent in the scent development. An eaglewood yin and yang; complementing each other vice versa. The animality of Indian oud enhances the leathery aspects, sharpens contours. The Thai oud provides the minimal smoke particle, which gives the conifers a mysterious aura, casting a shadow, creating reminiscences of sacred cults. Yet everything is cooled, has faded; was never, must never be.
Amarok, the great white shadow, the wolf spirit, wanders. A scent of contrasts, warm, proclaiming security while at the same time emitting distant and distinguished coldness.

Breathtakingly beautiful composition; smoky oud melt, balsamic conifer notes on top, swirling, dense leather notes - that’s enough for me.

A beautiful scent that reminds me of a green forest. Resinous, green, woody, leaning towards coniferous. Interesting but not for me.
