Green-Patterned Elegance
"Heidewitzka", "heureka" and "jappadappduuuu!!!!!" I could have screamed simultaneously when my eyes spotted an almost full 100 ml bottle of "Audace" in my dearly beloved flea market shop. (There, an unknown lady to me is replenishing the fragrance stock in the display from her private collection). And she only asked for 30 euros for this treasure!!! It was MINE!! I asked the seller to unlock the display case, quickly sprayed and smelled it, and bought it. Along with "Mystere de Rochas", same volume, same price (I will comment on that later). CLASS, what LUCK I had!! I had wanted to purchase both "Audace" and "Mystère" online, but couldn't find any suitable offers. And there, the fragrances smiled at me as if they were alive. Just like that. As if they had been waiting for me. And what a wonderful scent I have stocked up on with "Audace". Slightly "quirky" and a bit "old-fashioned" in the best sense, it whispers to me. First, violet-dominated, foolish and "green behind the ears", followed by a more "mature" duo of iris and jasmine. Slightly powdery and "dusty" in the top note. Later, two "Elegant Ladies" named clove and rose join in, with the clove being slightly superior to the rose. And they both linger for a long time, along with the initial notes, which fade only slowly. And then, first wafting in, then growing stronger, the green power contained in this perfume reveals itself. Mossy and coniferous, the purest form of pine forest, dry spicy juniper, bright green, wonderful galbanum adds its "peaks", and grass, earthy scented (I suspect vetiver), grows at the forest edge and between the trunks. But "Audace" remains elegant in its own unique way. Like a lady in a green-patterned, elegant daytime dress from the mid-thirties, taking a walk in the woods. With subtle joy on her face from being in the greenery. A fantastic, green-tinged chypre, as good as it could be. HEUREKA!!!

The Name Says It All
A big name comes with a responsibility: Audace means boldness in German and hits the mark here like rarely before. Those who wore Audace in the 1930s were bold enough to resist the taste dominated by oriental fragrances at the time. Those who wear Audace today also demonstrate boldness and self-confidence, because with Audace, one not only stands out today but also breaks the mold - at least in terms of perfume.
Madame Audace Rochas is a resolute No Nonsense lady who doesn’t care much for small talk at the open door. Why bother with greetings, um, top notes, which are overrated anyway and are nothing but self-promotional fluff? Madame Audace prefers to get straight to the point, briefly waving a rather meager bouquet of iris, violet, and a green rosebud, while spreading a hint of makeup bag, before she heads directly to the core and reveals her woody-resinous-aromatic, slightly smoky essence, I meant to say her base.
Young people often call her bluntly and without nuance an “old lady scent,” fashion victims who think they have their finger on the pulse of time arrogantly label her as “outdated and matronly,” and the jokers among them have nicknamed Madame Audace Rochas “Miss Moneypenny,” while self-proclaimed connoisseurs, when she comes up in conversation, condescendingly say, “A real classic, but…”.
Well, the crux with Madame Audace Rochas is that on one hand, all her critics are right when they pigeonhole her as an old lady scent, call her outdated, or even compare her to the wallflower of the James Bond films, or ramble on about a classic with a qualifying “but” at the end - and on the other hand, they are all wrong. Because Madame is one of the Chypres that have long been (unjustly) passé and thus does indeed come across as a bit out of time. She also seems a little humorless and distant, yet unlike some of her relatives, she has never bent, never reformulated, and never adapted to current tastes. As composed as she is today, she remains rather indifferent: “What do I care at my 80 years if I’m still contemporary? I have seen so many come and go and even experienced a comeback in the 1970s - let someone try to match that!”
All in all, she knows that she is one of the Grand Dames in the Chypre family, even if she is trapped in a kind of time bubble and likely finds far fewer admirers today than she did forty years ago when her comeback occurred and she was fully in line with the taste of the time.

Daring, Bold, Audacious and Brave...
...are certainly fitting for this fragrance, if one takes the derived adjectives of the possible translations for "Audace." In the 1930s, when fragrances were mostly heavy, lush-oriental or, thanks to the newly discovered aldehydes, floral-oily, Audace was undoubtedly daring, audacious, bold, and also a bit cheeky...

Whether the formulation described above actually corresponds to the first version from 1936, I cannot judge. I only know the version from the early 1970s in the bottle shown above.

For me, Audace is a typical green-floral chypre fragrance as they were in vogue in the late 60s and early 70s. It has similarities to Balenciaga's Cialenga, L de Loewe, and also slightly reminds one of the brilliant Y by YSL.

It's a shame that Rochas has taken some of its masterpieces off the market; Audace and the old Lumière for women, as well as Globe, Macassar, Monsieur Rochas, and Moustache would surely still have a wide following... pour ceux d'entre vous qui payent audace :-)

A green, woody, earthy chypre embraced by a synergy of flowers. It's like a stroll in the forest of your childhood on an autumn sunny day.

The R5 had thickly moss-covered windows
It had stood by the little woods for a long time
The flower garland still on the brown cord seat
It started up immediately

Heaven overcast with clouds. Collar turned up. Rain-cooled breathing flowers. Moss-soft, springy earth. Noble autumn-melancholic chypre beauty.

A truly beautiful chypre dream. Melancholic, delicately floral, lightly powdery, gently grounded. Amber adds a hint of sweetness. Very classic.

Beautiful floral scent with clove and moss base. Very classic in feel, yet still wearable today. Feminine in a good way.

EAu de Chypre in floral-woody. Moss-covered oaks and resinous pines meet a country garden and fresh earth. What a great old gentleman!

Bergamot in the rose garden sits on a mossy trunk.
Compared to other Rochas, it falls a bit short in my opinion, but it's an all-rounder.

Chypre? Yes
Madamig? Yes
Old-fashioned? Unfortunately, yes…
Herbaceous, floral, earthy, and a bit powdery - but it somehow lacks charm.
