Between Flower Market and Madness
Hello dear perfume lovers,
Perhaps the story sounds familiar to you. You watch one of the well-known fragrance influencers on YouTube, and suddenly there sits a relatively extravagantly dressed older gentleman, whom you find remarkably enjoyable to listen to as he talks about perfumes. I was completely green behind the ears when I first heard about Herbert Stricker.
Through further videos, it became clear that Herbert is basically the equivalent of a producer in the music world. Or a director in the film industry. - And a very important character in the German fragrance scene.
A charismatic gentleman who seems to know a lot about fragrance materials, scents, their perfumers, and origins - what could possibly go wrong when someone like him takes on the director role for original creations? This was something to find out, and it didn't take long before I had a large part of the Roberto Ugolini fragrances on my desk for testing. I was blown away by the ideas that were implemented there. Especially 4 Rosso and "Marzocco | Roberto Ugolini" captivated me - I would have loved to bathe in them.
Weeks went by, and before I even got around to putting the "Ugolinis" on the shelf, the big announcement came: Herbert Stricker will release eight new fragrances under his artist name "The Nose Behind." Under the slogan "The finest liquids," the focus should clearly be on the contents of the bottles, with each perfume containing special ingredients. I could hardly wait for the release, was almost excited to smell the new fragrances. Instagram and YouTube felt full of people celebrating the new collection. It was almost a hype in the niche world. Accordingly, the expectations were high. And what can I say... the expectations are in the corner, crying and feeling ashamed.
The first arrival was "Miami South Beach | The Nose Behind," but since the packaging and presentation are the same for all fragrances in the series, the first impression is transferable here. So I opened the package and immediately got the impression that everything here is of high quality. A simple but functional matte gray folding box in the Xerjoff style but with significantly less fuss. As it would later turn out, the simple presentation perfectly focuses on the scent. I open the box, and there it is. The smoky black bottle looks familiar to me, and I can't help but pull out Marc Gebauer's Air Tiger to dispel any lingering doubts. The black plastic cap rounds off the simple concept, nothing special, but functional. The sprayer seems up to the task. What followed, I was not prepared for.
Almost shouting, the scent jumps into your nose. The name Bangkok Shock describes the first moment of perception very well for me. This is what it must feel like when you walk through a market in Thailand or Malaysia, in Vietnam or Bali, and you run full speed from the part where tourists are sold plastic into the flower section. Citrusy notes, orange and mandarin hit you, paired with a very unusual jasmine note. Somehow I get slight chewing gum vibes, which is actually not my thing. But here it is so perfectly united with a wonderful rose and rounded off by iris and spices that I am left speechless. A real flash. This was probably what Herbert Stricker wanted to embody with this fragrance. A top-class flower market for which a specially fermented jasmine blossom was used. The hand that got the first spray was practically glued under my nose for the rest of the day. The intensity of the desire to smell this fragrance over and over again - I have never experienced anything like it, and every addiction counselor would at least have wrinkled their nose at this.
During the drydown, the scent becomes less excited but never loses intensity. It becomes softer and more floral, ultimately almost creamy. The plastic/chewing gum note increasingly merges with musk, dry patchouli, and a subtle vanilla, while the jasmine remains ever-present. As if the evening sun were laying over the flower market and the first shops were folding up their tables.
But just because the shop closes doesn't mean the scent is gone... On my skin, the fragrance lasts 10+ hours. I tested by spraying a bit more, and I could still perceive it the next morning. Due to the very distinctive and special scent, but also because of the power that the scent notes develop together, you are very well perceived with this fragrance, especially during the first three to four hours, when the top notes are still very present.
Like almost all from the "The Nose Behind" series, "Bangkok Shock" is also a very individual fragrance, and I would definitely recommend testing it beforehand. I can imagine that the chewing gum vibe may not appeal to everyone. But if you're up for a flashy floral scent that is definitely unisex, you should definitely give this one a try. I haven't been able to get enough of it since. The director has done a great job, so unironically: Thank you, Herbert.
