Fantastic tobacco
Snuff by Schiaparelli is a really solid and nice woody-herbal aromatic fougère quite on the formal, mature and refined side; mostly centered on mossy notes, herbs, tobacco, lavender, carnation, balsamic-resinous-piney notes, iris. Not a powerhouse for sure, and not even a “dark fougère” with loads of bitter leather like many other scents of its era. There’s some leather here too, but Snuff is more bright and balsamic, more about herbs, woods and pine, with a gentle floral and slightly shady “barbershop” side. It has a really elegant feel of mellow softness all over, which reminds me of Hermès Equipage: that same type of “tobacco bag” smell, which evokes the effortless and relaxed elegance of a gentleman’s weekend. Oddly enough though, it also – and more strongly - reminds me of another scent which has quite a much different mood: the ultra-cheap yet underrated youngster Haschish pour Homme by Veejaga. Try it; I’ve both here around, and to me they share quite a lot of common notes, with two really similar drydowns. Snuff is just a bit darker and more formal initially, and overall smells perhaps a bit more “expensive”, but they’re really close. Well anyway, a solid and totally pleasant fougère, worthy a try, but sadly apparently nearly impossible to find.

Havana Has Some Legitimate Competition!...
Snuff opens with a combination of moderately aromatic lavender and green oakmoss with hints of citric bergamot and relatively dry pipe tobacco. As the composition makes its way to its early heart, the relatively dry pipe tobacco blooms into the starring role with smooth leather now playing co-star, as the oakmoss hangs around in support, joined by mild carnation and slightly lemony green geranium. During the late dry-down the composition turns slightly powdery as dry vanilla joins relatively dry amber as co-stars with hints of sanitized patchouli and the remnants of the oakmoss and leather remaining through the finish. Projection is good and longevity very good at over 10 hours on skin.

Snuff is one of those compositions that hooks you in right from the moment you spray it on. As the oakmoss lavender and pipe tobacco trio hit, a smile couldn't be repressed as I already knew Snuff was a winner. That said, it wouldn't be the first time a composition impressed early, only to wimp or cheap out during the dry-down... I can safely say that in this case, if anything, things only get better. By the time the composition has entered its mid-section, the tobacco comes out in full force. This tobacco is not of the sickeningly sweet synthetic smelling variety found in so many other compositions, but rather a quite realistic relatively dry tobacco leaf with the oakmoss used as key support. I kind of liken the effect to pairing the oakmoss heavy Davidoff original with a relatively similar dry tobacco leaf accord in the neighborhood of Havana by Aramis. Before anyone cries foul as to any allusion that Snuff is a Havana (or Davidoff) hybrid clone, it isn't (and besides, it came out before both of them). I only mention those two masterpiece compositions because layering them might give one a bit of an idea of what to expect from Snuff's sublime heart section. Finally, moving to the late dry-down, Snuff goes in an entirely different direction as the perfumer uses the powdery facets of vanilla, amber and even some of the oakmoss in brilliant fashion, never allowing the powder to get in the way of the stark leather, all working together harmoniously as the composition slowly fades. What can I say?... This stuff is absolutely brilliant. The bottom line is the sadly discontinued Snuff (1977 version) is an absolutely "outstanding" 4.5 star out of 5 rated composition that realistic tobacco lovers should go out of their way on the aftermarket to procure... It is safe to say this one immediately did.

So smelled......He!
So he must have been, the man of her dreams. The man in the imagination or in the real life of Elsa Schiaparelli. The man who touched her heart and awakened her desires. A strong shoulder to lean on. Masculine and charming. Confident and strong in spirit and soul. A man who dried her tears or made them flow. A man who could silence her with a single glance when she raged and boiled with anger. The man who was her equal in all situations. Who knew how to take her with skin and hair and all her quirks. A man who carried her tenderly-dominantly in safe hands. Perhaps she also wanted the perfect mix of her wishes and ideas. A gentleman, dandy, gigolo, or rebel. One who united everything she desired. She wanted the perfect man. And when she created Snuff, she had at least already created his aura with it.

The Fragrance
Snuff begins with a distinctive soapy lavender note. Slightly underlaid with an almost metallic bergamot that makes the top note appear cool and fresh. Very bright and fresh-soft, herbal-green accords further emphasize this introduction. After a while, Snuff begins to change. It becomes darker green in its projection and heart note. Nuances of pine and patchouli weave through the perfume. Earthy and ethereal-woody, Snuff glides into darker realms while still dragging the lavender note behind it. In its base note, Snuff subtly becomes smoky-leathery through oak moss and a very delicate incense note. Through a minimal vanilla accord, it also slightly shifts into a tobacco note. This note is not as easily perceived on the skin as it is on clothing. There, it is better recognized. The lavender also runs through Snuff from the top note to the end in the base like a red thread. It gives the fragrance lightness and freshness throughout its entire progression.

Conclusion
Snuff is a man through and through. He wears a large XY on his forehead. The chromosome set of masculinity. Unmistakably, unmistakably, and unmistakably male. He contains all the attributes that Elsa Schiaparelli must have wished for in a man. Snuff is tenderly-confident, masculine-marked, elegantly-charismatic, and subtly-dominant in his aura. He is never too loud and not too quiet in his sillage, and he is loyal and long-lasting in his durability. Snuff is a gentleman and a gigolo. A good friend and a romantic rebel. Snuff is the fragrance for me when I want to be a real man. Through and through. Snuff is the fragrance that positively underscores and brings forth all the attributes in me as a man. No unisex and no gender swap in the fragrance. Masculine, male, unfiltered, and pure. Whatever Elsa Schiaparelli thought when she created Snuff. This is how a man's fragrance should be or how it smelled,...He!

One cannot always be a hero, but one can always be a man.

There you are at last...
Yes, I had to wait a long, very long time to snag a bottle of this gem at an acceptable price. "Bolzano Reloaded" this year finally made it possible...

The fragrance description by the esteemed colleague Gentilhomme really needs no addition, he has described it so aptly. I must, however, still share my vintage thoughts, as Snuff is unique in many respects.

Well, 1977 is truly a worthy year for this bombshell, just before the onset of what we now know as 'Powerhouse.' Here, everything that could be imagined at the time was processed without regard for losses, but - and this makes this fragrance a one-of-a-kind for me - in a way that I would like to call "stringently surprising."

A hard, very green opening, hitting you right between the eyes, but with a smoky tobacco note that starts off subtly and then gradually becomes more prominent, yet never overpowers, instead allowing space for other woody-leathery notes. The development practically never stops, as oak moss and even incense come into play, all without the entire ensemble appearing even remotely chaotic or deliberately complicated.

Sillage and especially longevity are clearly above average. Thanks to the (unnamed) perfumer for such a daring piece of work. Truly great olfactory cinema.

Snuff from the Leather Pouch
Snuff as a noun means snuff tobacco in English, but as a verb, it has various, somewhat frightening meanings.... To snuff someone, for example, means to kill someone.... No, this scent is certainly not a killer, nor a big coup, but it does stand out in an interesting way from the rather common men's leather fragrances of the late 70s.

Compared to the heavier, warm leather scents like Léonard Pour Homme or Ted Lapidus TL Homme, Snuff is rather cool and lightly metallic, although the leather note is undeniable. One could describe it as a summery leather scent :-)

Snuff starts off herbal-green and has a floral-woody heart with a very harmonious pine-patchouli wave. At Schiaparelli, the leather accord was not mixed with heaps of additional animalistic base notes (the amber accord mentioned in the pyramid is perceived very faintly), but rather focused on resins and moss.

Whether the scent in its original version was similar to the reformulation from 1977, I cannot say, but I believe I read somewhere that it originally corresponded more to a tobacco note than a leather note. It was stylishly sold as a Gentlemen's Perfume in a glass pipe, with a Bakelite cap shaped like a mouthpiece, all beautifully nestled in a wooden box. :-)

The newer version was offered in a tailored bottle typical for Schiaparelli fragrances, the EdT in brown glass, the After Shave in green glass. For the EdT splash, the bottle cap was a silver-colored plastic pipe.

Unfortunately, Snuff is no longer produced, which is a shame....

Green, spiced with lots of myrrh, lavender, tobacco, incense and leather. The bitter herbaceous facet makes the scent unpleasant for me.

A very refreshing green opening: lavender and something pine-like. Myrrh and a light leather note give the fragrance warmth. Long-lasting and extremely good!

The bottle is somewhere between a masterpiece and hideous - the scent is too old-school spicy, slightly musty-woody, more spice market than nature!
