Woodland fairy vibes / Birthday present to myself

I admit that this only flew on my radar because I saw a video from Josephine (Jus de Rose) on Tiktok. She was raving about it, calling this the ideal vanilla. So off I went to order a 2 ml sample. When I sprayed it I was pleasantly surprised. A slight cupcake accord from the bourbon vanilla with powderiness from the vanilla orchid, although the overall scent is not completely gourmand. Now, because of this perfume, I am intrigued by any fragrance where vanilla orchid is listed. There is a slight woodiness that is pleasant from the Peru balsam. Overall this perfume has an ethereal vibe. 2 sprays from the sample on my wrist and it had decent projection. I thought about ordering a full bottle but saw the price. However, several weeks later, I have a discount code from Liberty London and an upcoming birthday, so this is my 31st birthday present to myself.

This smells like a fresher version of Maison Margiela's Whispers in the Library / Alt Fragrances 'Novel', which are also powdery, slightly boozy vanillas.

Your Grandma's Vanilla but with a Gimmick

This is the smell of visiting your Grandma's house. In her bedroom is the faint lingering scent of her distinct aldehyde bomb perfume mixed with her creamy vanilla lotion. There is something very grandma vintage about this vanilla fragrance that makes it lean a little into synthetic territory. It does open a bit creamy and with hints of wood that invokes a slight feeling of warmth and coziness, but not a whole lot. Its not gourmand, experimental, luxurious, or anything. Just a synthetic leaning vintage vanilla. Its not a bad fragrance, I just felt bored.

This scent sits really close to the skin, so it is office approved. The price for a 75ml is 230€ and a 150ml refill is 330€. There are plenty of vanilla fragrances in the world that are both more affordable and significantly more interesting. Forgettable. little warm and cozy.

An article from 10 Magazine wrote in March that the company has "patent-pending technology" called molecular aura, which is supposed to make their perfume last up to 30 hours. Either that technology wasn't implemented in this fragrance's development or its a total gimmick. This fragrance lasted maybe 5 hours on my skin, which isn't a bad thing. That is a respectable amount of time. But if you are going to advertise 30 hours fragrances, then it needs to last 30 hours.

A perfect vanilla

This is my beloved vanilla, the most beautiful one for me – soothing and incredibly comforting magic. The scent is sensual, blissful, stunning. Just looking at the notes, you can already tell it’s going to be a brilliant combination, and it truly is. Nothing weird here, just pure beauty. On me, it’s very long-lasting. A perfect vanilla.

Platonic ideal

Smooth sophisticated balsamic vanilla, airy yet substantial, maybe the Platonic ideal of a vanilla. Incredibly beautiful and incredibly overpriced. I promise you’ve smelled this before for far less cash, I certainly have. And also… sigh, I think I need a bottle. It’s damn good. If you were a devotee of the now-discontinued Whispers in The Library from Maison Margiela, consider sampling this. The treatment of vanilla here will bring back those memories.

Time Machine

How beautiful you are. You take me back to Ibiza. Almost 20 years have passed in the meantime. Back then, there were perfumeries on every corner of the island. They sold designer fragrances at duty-free prices. And almost every vacation, I treated myself to a new scent. I did that back then too. My partner, by the way, thought he smelled British, the new fragrance. I would have said French, which fits better with a French house.

Yes, French. With gentle fruits and floral notes. But not like today. In the early 2000s, floral and even fruity fragrances, perhaps already something like gourmands for that time, had a serious, mature base. Perfume all the way. Vanilla was at the center of this beautiful fragrance. And every time I wore this scent, I was enveloped in a soft, wonderful, adult vanilla aura all day long. Dreamy beautiful.

Encore Une Fois by Coty also envelops you in such a vanilla aura. Actually, I don’t like expensive exclusive lines. And now Coty has to do this too. But okay. That shouldn't be the topic here. The fragrance intrigued me. With its reduced notes of vanilla, vanilla orchid, and tolu balsam. So I had to test it. And yes, it is beautiful. Beautiful, like fragrances were 20 years ago. Noble, vanillic, grown-up. Perhaps a few fruits and flowers here and there as well. Whatever they may be, the heart can choose for itself. Unfortunately, we learn nothing about the details or the perfumer. So let the imagination play. Fragrances of this kind are unfortunately almost only available today if we dedicate ourselves to these expensive exclusive lines. Or if we look at brands like Henry Jacques or Krigler.

The reference fragrance I mentioned earlier was Alchimie by Rochas. But I could also mention Joop Le Bain in its very first formulation. I also detect hints of Joop Berlin, which I had longed for back then. I could list more examples. In the 90s and at the beginning of the 2000s, comparable fragrances lined the shelves of perfumeries. For my budget as a young professional back then, they were certainly not cheap at the time.

Encore Une Fois costs 230 euros. A nice vintage that smells similar and is well-preserved probably costs that much today too.

Yes, the name fits, reliving that time again. Reviving one’s youth and smelling just like before. Encore Une Fois! Quite beautiful. Yes, I must admit that. But do I need it? I still need to think about that a bit more.
